: Tightening Ring Gear Bolts

Ok. So probably a dumb question but I'm stumped right now.

First diff I've done, Ford 9". So I used the Impact to get the rear gear almost down, but now I'm stuck trying to torque down the ring gear bolts to spec (60 ft/lbs.)

How the hell do I stop this damn thing from turning? I tried holding it, failed. Tried putting it onto the axle, couldn't stop the axle from turning. Lay the whole thing down and wedge something into the wheel studs, and then the carrier turns. But the carrier into the housing to stop it from rolling and then damn carrier is turning cause the ARB isn't locked.

Is there an easier way to do this that I'm just not seeing right now? I don't want to put the whole carrier into a vice cause I feel like I'd damage something. I haven't tried finding out if you can lock the ARB manually, basically because there has to be a way to do it without (being as this is done on Open diffs too).

Appreciate any help.

there's less torque on the carrier if you position the torque wrench across the
ring gear[and not sticking out the side] and have someone help hold it....

Hmm.... ok. I'll have to find a deep well socket to clear the carrier bearing (my dad doesn't have much for sockets unfortunately), but I'll give it a shot. Thanks.

or hold it in a bench vise.

ON EDIT: didn't see that you didn't want to do this. if your worried about damaging it, just put some shop rags over the jaws of the vise

strap wrench around carrier or i have mashed a brass drift in between the pinion and ring gear to stop it from turning.... maybe even a peice of copper or bronze.

I have always just set the carrier on the floor, and had a friend hold the carrier while I torqued the bolts. It does help tightening from across the carrier (need for deep well socket) instead of from the edge. Works every time.

Stuff a rag down in there between the ring gear and the pinion. It'll jam it up tight.

I don't have the pinion installed yet.

I was able to it with some soft wood and a table top vice. I'll have to try it out once I get the pinion installed. Seems like a good idea.
