Have 95' F350 460EFI going into an 86' F350 460carb. I am wondering about the VSS?? Does the VSS only control the shifting of the transmisson and speedo? I will be using the 4spd trans and stock transfer case out of the 86' (upgrade later to 5spd trans) I assume then the speedo on the 86' is in the rear of the trans then....so can I keep the stock 10.25 in the 86 and not even worry about the VSS (speedo and shift points wont matter) or will I have to get a VSS sterling 10.25 from a newer ford for the engine to work properly even though using the 4spd manual trans and transfer case out of the 86??

On the older OBD I (EEC IV) the VSS should only be needed to run the tranny. With the setup you are planning it will not be needed.

if its like my 351, you shouldh ave an issue so long as you have the proper fuel injection. when I swapped mine, all I had to do for the starter was ground the neutral safety switch. The computer threw a bunch of tranny codes, but otherwise it runs fine.
Sounds like what I was thinking... I heard I could get a manual trans computer instead of my E40D but if it runs fine either way... so to get around the neutral safety switch is just ground it then?

yes, I just used the ground wire in the wiring harness, I forget the colors, but they vary quite a bit, typical ford

ground it within the harness. Not to a body ground.
That harness comes off the E40D I would assume then anyone have a schematic drawing :D

you would think, but they have a tendency to be different colors pretty often. I have a CD for a 94 that my buddy is supposed to get back to me. When he does, and when you are ready, pm me and I will try to find it for you. I just cant recall
So the manual trans also have a neutral safety correct, under the dash on the pedal (92-97) and E40D is on the trans then.... I also assume the 86' wont have a saftey switch on the pedal?

86 still should have a safety switch in the clutch.
Then I would assume I should be able to wire the 86' clutch pedal switch and use it?

it is just a switch. open or closed.
when I did my EFI in my rig I wanted it to start in gear, I just jmpered the harness to by pass the safety switch.
