: We Miss You at Tellico OHV!
Crawfords Campground 08-04-2008, 07:46 AM Hello Everyone,
Just wanted to let you all know that we are feeling the hard times of the economy and high cost of fuel as well. We would like to initiate a little economic stimulas package of our own as well as get you here to see Tellico OHV. Something we all need to keep in mind is that Tellico OHV is important to us all and we need to bring it back to it's full glory. The fight is going to be long and drawn out and it will be easy to pass into a memory of great times. We have to keep the interest up and stay positive. These groups that want to shut down your access to public lands have all the time in the world, simply because they don't have a desire to use the place. I have spoken to the Forest Service on many occasions and they state that attendance is down out here, believe me, I am very well aware. They also like to throw out that they believe that it is because of the cost of fuel and the general state of the economy. They are counting on all of you to just let it slip away.
We want you to come back and get motivated. This is still a great place to wheel. There are still high challenge trails open. If you think the park is no fun the way your rig is set up, change the tires to something smaller to make it more challenging for you. I think it would be pretty neat to see a bunch of built rigs with street tires tackle the park if you think you can. Ride your ATVs of motorcycles. Come and enjoy the atmosphere of hanging around with your buddies after a day at the park!
We are offering 25% all camping and cabin rates for August and Sept. So folks lets get the party started!
TacoRunner 08-04-2008, 04:46 PM We got a group of Toyota's coming in Sept. I would like to get a weekend in in August to but it's going to be hard.
Crawfords Campground 08-05-2008, 05:00 AM Sounds Great! Shoot me a call when you come up with the dates.

krawler00 08-05-2008, 01:44 PM Hey Danny, I know you and Chuck at Tellico Cabins have been hit hard with all this junk and hopefully things will look up soon! We have a run coming in 2 weeks and I will be staying at your place for the weekend. Me and my 2yr old son. I appreciate the 25% off but I will give you the $5 a night for primitive camping! Best deal around! It's not much but every bit helps! I will post up on gatrailriders forum about the discount along with Jeepforum. We need to fight the good fight on this and will see you soon!
Crawfords Campground 08-05-2008, 02:25 PM Look forward to seeing everyone, it has been lonely around here watching the grass grow and the tumbleweeds blowing across the rock garden.
See Ya,
Mike327 08-05-2008, 02:55 PM For the 33 and under crowd Tellico is still a great place. I had the teenager up there first of July and we had a blast. Now is great time to go check out Tellico and get a little experience, especially if you are a little timid/uneasy about taking a smaller rig around all the big boys. It was worth the eight hour drive one way to watch the boy play in his rig.
krawler00 08-05-2008, 05:55 PM Yeah, I run 33's and have a blast up at Tellico. Everything can be done up there if you know what you are doing on 33's. Good call!
vetteboy79 08-05-2008, 06:58 PM Look forward to seeing everyone, it has been lonely around here watching the grass grow and the tumbleweeds blowing across the rock garden.
See Ya,
Back in summer of '04, I drove my XJ down to Tellico (about 900 miles) to wheel for four days. I arrived at Crawford's with a busted t-case that we rebuilt by the campfire that night, and I was able to wheel the rest of the time and drive it home.
I have some fantastic memories from that place - both the OHV area and the campground - and I will definitely be back there as soon as work, $$, and time allows. :(
Crawfords Campground 08-06-2008, 05:39 AM I had a couple of guys here this weekend and they learned real fast not to under estimate Tellico. They were driving a well modified Yota on 37's. They started up guardrail and pow! Ring gear destroyed as well as a hub. They spent 6 hours just getting off the trail and never saw anyone. So, the point is do not discount that the Tellico Curse is still alive and well. There still is challenge out here and opportunity for some great times. You just have to change you mindset and maybe take the harder lines to make it more challenging. Remember, any day you get to wheel is a Great Day!
redman_30_06 08-06-2008, 08:34 PM There is definatly still plenty of challenge at Tellico. The last time I was there I ended up flopping at the top of guardrail. In my opinion it can still be as easy or as hard as one wants it to be, its just all about the lines you take.:D
broncomania79 08-08-2008, 08:22 AM hey danny, i hope to get my rig fixed soon so i can come back and visit. good luck to you and chuck.
Crawfords Campground 08-08-2008, 10:50 AM You are welcome here anytime.
joes4x4 08-09-2008, 06:49 AM We stayed at crawfords a couple years back and had a blast,it even snowed which made everything better,I only had 33's and NO:shaking:lockers and I think I had a better time than in my larger truck,We have been planning a ride to come up soon no matter the cost of fuel,It all boils down to people going and showing that tellico is still a great place don't let a bunch of people outside of our sport take that away from us,so some of the trails are closed, well try something else bring something smaller like steve mentioned just don't get into the frame of mind that it is not worth going because of the closings, bring the family or better yet, someone who has never been
Branman 08-09-2008, 07:41 PM Danny we enjoyed the stay(we were the bronco group), Hope business goes well in the future and tellico stays open. Thanks Brandon B.
yellowxj 08-11-2008, 08:23 AM I miss seeing lines of rigs rolling past the shop here too. My kids used to run out to the road to see them come up. I did sell my yellowxj on 35's and built a "new" xj on 31's...that put the challenge right back into guardrail and helicopter and a lot of other trails at tellico...and its less threatening looking to the environmentals...I know there are other private parks we can ride in but we should not lose the "public" places.
Last year we did 5(?) recoveries from Tellico and Beasly OHV areas...nothing this year...computer says 26% decline in business over this time last year. Theres been no paint on the rock pile at my shop other than mine for a long time. :(
Normally DIY shop rental is $35/hour for lift and access to all the tools I have. If anyone riding in Tellico and staying at Crawfords or Tellico Cabin rentals needs to rent the my shop for repairs I'll let them use it for an hour for free during Aug and Sept. Its not much but its all I have to offer for now.
Our shop is about a 25 miles / 40 min drive from Crawfords/Tellico Cabins.

Danny we have a group coming up this weekend. Do we need to call ahead of time or will you have enough primitive spots? Thanks and hang in there! Jason
krawler00 08-12-2008, 01:41 PM Just email him and he has spots ready!
Crawfords Campground 08-13-2008, 05:48 AM Yep, plenty of spots avail.. We have a couple of the fully equipped cabins open, couple of the bunk cabins and your pick of sights. Please call ahead if you can, so I have an idea what to expect. The more the better, maybe I can keep the lights on this month. All joking aside, we have closed off the large primitve area and the grass is getting tall and shut down the bottom bath house. Two maintenance expenses we have cut out until things get better. REAL NICE seeing the fuel prices dropping. $3.57 at Wally World yesterday.
We should have a cook and camp weekend next month. Bring the families out, have a big bon fire, good food and great company. I think once some folks come out here and take the chip off their shoulders they would see that Tellico still has a lot to offer. There is a ton of misinformation floating around. Some of it is from big talkers, some I believe are talking Tellico down to funnel folks to there neck of the woods or events. Area newspapers are an issue as well. They will put the wrong information in an article and never follow up the story with the right info. I was told that a paper in Ashville, stated the whole park is closed. We got a lot of people from that area that don't belong to a club or forum that have not been here this year.
The point is come and see for yourself with an open mind. Please don't ruin the experience for someone else that wants to come. Stay positive!
roundhouse 08-13-2008, 05:51 AM I've been to the campground for the Early Bronco events a couple of years ago.
Nice place.
I havent been to Tellico this year, most likely wont be able to.
geeze I just cant justify spending the money.
Tank of gas to get there, Tank of gas trailriding, Tank of gas to get back home. plus 9-10 meals eating out per person.
Costs $350~ for one weekend of trailriding.
bmc69 08-13-2008, 07:59 AM I wish you all the best, Danny and I certainly enjoyed every one of my many stays at your (and before that, Steve's) place and the wheeling was always awesome. Unfortunately for me ..the 700 miles each-way became wildly cost-prohibitive due to fuel costs alone. :(
Good luck...and I'm sure I will be back there one of these days, most likely when we can organize another tractor-trailer transport for a bunch of us like we did the last time I did make it down.

I hear ya....but...We have been spending $500 for one day of COMPETITION thats not even half as fun as a full weekend of trailriding.
Danny,we are going to try like hell to get there this year. With comps and building trucks, no time. Once the crew here gets all their rides done, we are wanting to plan a big trip before the snow blows....(buggy's and we are wimps:flipoff2:)

roundhouse 08-16-2008, 02:43 PM Danny Im sorry to hear the biz is slow,
I hope it pics up.
Dunno if you remember but I talked to you one day a couple of years ago.
My 8 yr old left his gameboy in your office and you brought it out and found us, Im the guy that has a family member working with St. Johns County.
Beautiful place. sitting on your front porch and watching the sun set was very nice!
Crawfords Campground 08-17-2008, 06:36 AM Yep. I do rember you. I can tell you that I have replaced two gameboys and a Nentindo DS since then that my kids have left behind. If you get the time you should come back out this way.
76k5wheeler 08-17-2008, 11:48 AM hey danny this is todd had a great time this weekend i was in the red yota see you labor day
Jwhit55 08-18-2008, 08:56 PM Just got back from there today and honestly it was the best time i've had since i've been goin to the park (12 yrs). Just b/c lower 2 and slick rock are closed doesnt mean there isnt a challenge. School bus, upper 2, guard rail, helo pad, and v notch are some of the most difficult trails in the southeast. So hell spend the extra money and come on.
Crawfords Campground 08-21-2008, 06:35 AM That's what I want to hear. I listen to all of the big talk about how Tellico is dead and you can walk all over the park in a stock jeep. That is simply not the case. True, that two of the most popular trails are closed. They are not forgotten and the more that come back and see the value of this park the better off the fight will be to keep this one open as well as the others that will be under attack soon after, if a final decision is made to flatten it. Now is your time to bring the group of family out to enjoy this place. We are close by, things are discounted to cut the cost off the travel expense and the park still is a great place to wheel.
Yall Come Back Now, Ya Hear!
babyed 08-21-2008, 06:27 PM we're coming to tellico sept 21-27 any trail updates?
we're coming to tellico sept 21-27 any trail updates?
They may be working on Trail One at that time. They released a Decision Memo this week and stated that work could begin at any time. Work is supposed to include asphalt, widening, removing some cut bank and erosion control measures.
snobrder 08-27-2008, 01:06 PM I'm heading up with my family the weekend of 9/6 to do a little fishing with my dad then take the buggy over the rock garden so I'm covering both sides of the argument this trip. :D:flipoff2:
Friday night and after some fishing Saturday I'll see what I can break on the rock piles.
