: dana 44 carrieer removal

i am having trouble removing the carrier from my front d44. it is out of a 1980 blazer. i hae tried everything to get it out, prybars and slidehammers and it wont budge. it still turns but i cannot get it out of the housing. help?

Ahh, seems like i just gave this advice for something else.:laughing:

Anyway, pull the bearing caps and shove a couple shop towels down where the ring and pinion meet. start twisting the pinion with a wrench so it sucks the rags between the gears. it'll push the carrier right out.

If its that hard, get a case spreader

Put a box end wrench on a ring bolt and rotate the diff until the wrench snuggs up against the houseing. Then use a pipe wrench or something to turn the yoke and it will push the diff case out. Leave the carrier bearing caps on loosly just in case everything falls out.

I've never gotten the rag trick to work but a lot of people do it.

use the pinion to pound it out, that is if you dont need the gears and think your carrier is strong.

You did remove the axle shafts, right. :flipoff2:

A case spreader is the way to go. You can make one if you need to with a couple of pieces of flat stock.
