Please be gentle, I'm a scout and jeep guy so this is foreign turf to me. I got a turbo 400 and an unknown transfer case as part of a package deal when I bought one of my scouts. The owner said it was out of his buddies 89 or 90 chevy 3/4 ton pickup. HE was sure about the trans but not the t-case. I can't find any markings on the case that would be a dead giveaway. any help is appreciated.

Since you say its steel, its either a 203 or a 205. The 205 will have a small round cover on the backside that is held on by three bolts. The 203 is huge with a big aluminum rear output housing

if it hasnt been removed it will have a

rectangle blue tag in the front [steel 203-205] between the the input and output

a round red tag in the rear [aluminum, 207, 208, 231, 241]

i think i saw your other post, but i didnt think they ran the 203 that late in the body style, i thought the officaly killed it in the early 80's

Definitely steel would mean definitely NP205 to me in 1989 or 1990...and actually it is cast iron, not steel.

so I went out and measured it at about 22" overall with the whole rear output casing aluminum. Based on what I'm reading, I gots me a 203. As far as the year they stopped using em, sorry I can't help. Oh, and now that I've got it narrowed down... anyone wanna buy it? I already have a post in the classifieds for it.:D

Passenger or driver's side front output? I still say that if it's cast iron it's an NP205, especially since the last year of the NP203 behind the TH400 was 1977 and 1979 for all other trannies if I recall correctly.

Slip yoke NP205 (big aluminum tail)

*edit* Everyone knows that NP203's aren't worth much. I'll give you $50 for that 32 spline "NP203" ;-)

It's a 203.If it was in a 89 model it must have been swapped in since they stopped usin them by 1980.

It's probably out of a 78-79 3/4ton pickup or Suburban.

Why 78-79? I thought that they were putting the NP203 behind all automatics from 74-79?

big mudder

They used both the 205's and 203's behind the auto's and even used the 203's behind the 465 in 73-75 thereabout's.The reason I said 78-79 is the fact that the front output is the 30 spline square flange type and not the 10 spline U-bolt type.Could possibly be a 77 model at the oldset.By 1980 they went to 205 exclusively.

;) i have a 465 203 for my doubler :grinpimp:

thats about all 203 are good for, emergency replace a blown up one or a doubler, the first thing anybody should do is rip theres out and 205 asap.

Oh hell no. We need a brand new one so that nobody would have to search thru old descriptions, or photos, or god forbid, read the data tag. While we're at it, we should include all the other common information, such as spline counts, large vs. small bearing, which ones are passenger drop, and conversely, which are drivers drop.

We need a thread to state that Hi pinion is not reverse rotation, contrary to popular nomenclature.

While we're at it, we should do a thread on how to tell a kingpin D60 from a d44, how many bolts there are on a 14 bolt cover, and any other bits of information that have been covered numerous times in the past.

And when the next guy asks the same damn questions, we should delete that one, and start a brand new thread.

I have a great idea,

Lance, could you delete all the posts to date, so we can start all over again.
