: How stout are S1 axles?

I have a pair of axles from a rusted out 1952 S1 landy. Is it ok to run 35" tires on those? I'm thinking normal getting around, and not for "extreme" offroading. Do they stand up to this, or do i bust parts?

-I'm gonna build some kind of buggy and it's gonna be light.

Thoughts? Tips?

hmmm.... .not the strongest stuff, but with the stock 2liter engine then you're not really throwing loadsa power down there, are you?

one modification you can do, easily, and cheaply, is to get some series 2/3 rear axle shafts, and fit those.
before you scream that the axles are wider, you have to take an extra drive flange, cut the 'top' off of it (the bit that the outer dust cap would normally clip onto) so that it's 'flat', then cut the locating lip off of the drive flange that is on the axle shaft. then you can either just use longer bolts to hold them, or weld them (better...oil proof too).

that way, you can easily replace the shafts when they break, and with 'slightly' stronger series 2/3 and definately more readily available.

this modification was in LRW magazine some time back, i'll see if i've still got it kicking around.

35" tires on series one axles?
Why ?Because you've got them .Not worth the effort .The rear is semi floating ,the front uses a Tracta joint so sourcing spares will be a pain .By the time you stuff around upgrading these things you may as well have bought something better to start with .

Luke.

P.S just took 2 complete sets to the dump.

Luke,

I will PAY YOU to go get those Tracta-joints from the scrap heap.

YES I AM SERIOUS ABOUT THIS.

Ok Fugly,

NEXT time you get a hold of any S1 tracta's, or unique body parts, let me know.

Those Tracta's are GOLD. (now the secret's out...)

Anyway, it makes me sad to know that the 80's are just being scrapped. :(

actually, a lot of the Jap stuff is pretty good. a few of my mates here have little suzi 410 and 413's, and they're pretty nimble. they'll go a lot of places a LR won't!

but then a LR will go a lot pf places a Suzi won't!
