Which would be better for a solid axle conversion, A 78 fj40 front axle or a 84 toyota pickup front axle. I have both and am wondering if there's any strength differences. this is for my 87 toy pickup.

Avoid a drum-brake FJ axle. I'm pretty sure a 78 FJ40 had drums up front.

They have weak outer with very low spline count (10?) as opposed to the 30-spline mini and disk brake cruiser axles.

They have a smaller bolt pattern on top of the knuckle that really doesn't play well with hysteer arms, and the diff is bigger. Clearance from the realtively small diffs is one thing I like about mini axles... why get rid of that?

Plus an 84 axle has the full-length gusset under the long-side of the housing. Use the 84 axle. The 84-85 front is the best axle toyota made (unless you cound fj-80 stuff, but that's $$$)

Actually, the first mini-truck crossover steering setups used a Landcruiser crossover arm.

- jack I know. But why use an axle with a smaller bolt pattern on the arm when you can get a larger one by using an axle that's just plain better, to boot.

I'm not comparing the axles. The mini-truck axle is clearly better to me with all the pinon snapping problems that LC axles have but the arms I'm refering too have the same bolt pattern as mini-trucks.

it would be better to go with the 84... both thirds are the same too. and u can get 81+ fj40 rotors and use your ifs calipers and your set.
