: Abandoned Mines in Norcal?
FJCryptographer 08-06-2008, 05:34 PM Do people know of abandoned mines, mine shafts, etc., in Norcal that are still open? They're everywhere in Nevada, but I've had a hard time finding such here. GPS coordinates or directions would be great! Thanks.
trkklr77 08-06-2008, 05:42 PM i found a mica/gold mine in moore creek above jackson.
Dusty Booger 08-06-2008, 07:49 PM There are not as many in Norcal as Nevada and even the SoCal desert. (I have been in a few good ones East of Owens Valley & some in Death Valley that were cool.)
Sugar Pine mine off the middle fork of the Feather River near Quincy used to be accessable. There are others, but many unmaintained mines fill with water or collapse. The ones up North typically do not last as well as the desert mines.
Pantheus 08-06-2008, 07:54 PM Here's 49 in Butte County with lat longs
http://californiamaps.org/map.php?county=Butte&type=mine
Here's 102 in Plumas County with lat longs

Substitute county name for ' Butte ' or ' Plumas ' in the same url for some more.

Cobra5.0Jeep 08-06-2008, 09:30 PM Theres a mine somewhere near where i work, i tried finding it but i couldn't remember the directions i was given. Supposedly there is a old Model T sitting outfront of the mine that used to run a conveyor belt and you can walk into the mine for the first 20feet before it slopes down a lot. i found the explosive bunker when i first went looking for this mine.
Theres a lot of mines all over the Tahoe Forest.

thats some interesting stuff there. I don't think you can publicly acess most of them w/out going through private property or going to a private mine. i suppose you can take note to the trespassers beware signs that you have to go past. definitely cool checking those out on the hybrid view.
scout254 08-06-2008, 11:39 PM Watch it guys, I know that USFS has been working on their "open mine" problem these last couple years....
"Abandoned Mine Closures" and "Abandoned Mine Reclamation"
Watch what you list as open mines, abandoned mines, mine shafts, etc... so others can "visit" and make it easier for the USFS
I do believe some mines are dangerous and need to be closed, but.... watch out... big brother is watching what you post:flipoff2:
:homer:
basspro 08-07-2008, 10:14 AM On The Stanislaus, there is the tippe lee mine. Decent 4x4 road down a canyon to get to it. Also the is a fairly large one Buchanon Mine out past Murphy ranch, behind Tuolumne. Both are on geocaching.com.
Link to the tippe lee http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=d67c72c7-715c-4962-b043-a7aea4691394
Link to the Buchanon, not much wheeling to this one, mostly 2wd, unless done in middle of winter, then the mud is only still moderate:

RockMolester 08-07-2008, 10:40 AM There are several mines on Monitor Pass near the Hwy 89/4 junction south of Lake Tahoe. The Barney-Riley Trail takes you through the area. I haven't explored any of the mines so I can't tell you what you'll find, but there's a lot of them in this area.

HOPEING to have the FJ done enough for some winter wheeling...all depends on finances (just had a kid 5 days ago).
Brandon 08-13-2008, 01:43 PM Jergins off of deer valley but since the mo fo blocked the entrance to the BLM land you can only get there by raft..

His rig is usually a workbench 20-30 feet into every trail run :flipoff2: X2.7 and he's down to wheel anywhere anytime.

As long as it's not your welds on the stinger :flipoff2:
thetrailboss 08-26-2008, 08:56 PM Hey FJCryptographer I like your attitude Plz let me know when your next search missions is and I would love to go searching for mines also. In your list did you forget the Calaveras Central Mine right out of Angels camp on the Murphy grade rd ?
My other interest is also old logging camps & equipment especially old Steam Donkeys left behind in the old logging camps. Anyone run across any of these big massive pieces of machinery in there 4 wheeling travels ? Usually there still in good shape due to the large size and remote locations
heres a pic of it

BiggaFigga 08-26-2008, 09:07 PM I dont have GPS coordinates, but there is Four Hills mine outside of Graeagle on the Gold Valley trail. I have found roughly 8 of them in that general vicinity.

MUDTYME 09-19-2008, 02:14 PM The run to Tippe lee mine is awesome!I have done it many times.
Cobra5.0Jeep 09-20-2008, 08:36 PM wish i could find some more mines, i helped fence one off a couple of weeks ago. it was more of a test hole or maybe a vent that filled in

j33p3r4x4 09-23-2008, 05:39 PM Do any of you know of any abandoned mines in the shingle springs area?
j33p3r4x4 09-30-2008, 04:36 PM I found this: http://books.google.com/books?id=Yfa0hmE7yocC&pg=PA485&lpg=PA485&dq=Flonellis+miners&source=web&ots=nGK0SXY4eM&sig=AV_nEikdY5QGqXQsqhUhGkA-ywA&hl=en#PPA476,M1
Lots of GPS
Cobra5.0Jeep 10-01-2008, 10:35 PM my fire engine has the Garmin GPS 60CSx and it has all the mines in hte Tahoe FOrest labeled on it, i don't know how it was loaded like that. I just bought the 60CSx.
thetrailboss 10-01-2008, 10:49 PM Interesting...... I have the same unit and mine dosent show any mines..... maybe you have the US forest service maps loaded instead of the standard garmin maps
Pantheus 10-02-2008, 12:05 AM I also have the same GPS.
I have the Garmin Topo US maps for the area I'm interested in loaded, and in finest resolution it does show mines (and everything else).
But to do any real work with it, I bought National Geographic TOPO! for California, because unlike the Garmin maps it shows private property vs public property and much more detail. But National Geographic won't download to the GPS, while Garmin does.
So the combination of great maps on the computer and weak maps on the GPS, not a bad combo, but spendy.
Ken
thetrailboss 10-02-2008, 12:14 AM arent the US Forest service maps available ?
Pantheus 10-02-2008, 12:53 AM Not to my knowledge.
Back when the Route Designation Process was beginning, NOHVCC put out a DVD on how to use the Garmin to find GIS waypoints for use in RDP.
USFS uses GIS not Garmin / Magellan / DeLorme points.
National Forest Boundaries ARE shown on both Garmin maps and National Geographic maps, though.
Each GPS manufacturer seems to allow only their software to be downloaded. All can upload to National Geographic TOPO! though.

Whitewater 05-27-2009, 10:20 AM Do any of you know of any abandoned mines in the shingle springs area?
Yes, I know of plenty.
There are several mines on Monitor Pass near the Hwy 89/4 junction south of Lake Tahoe. The Barney-Riley Trail takes you through the area. I haven't explored any of the mines so I can't tell you what you'll find, but there's a lot of them in this area.
Yes there are many mines in the Loope Canyon area, But Most if not all are caving in and are not safe at all. I know of a few shafts that you can still get in about a 100 yds but thats it, the timbers are all rotten and no longer support the loose rock.
There is a really neat cabin that I am pretty sure is hunted, take the first left on Loope Canyon rd.
This area is extremely exciting, your neck hair stands up as soon as you enter the canyon. A really great place to visit.
Also watch out for the locals:

BobCat5.0 05-27-2009, 05:10 PM on noonchester mine road off of the rubicon, near homewood ski area
HackerMania 05-28-2009, 10:32 AM I know a dozen or so in EDNF most have heavyequipment, cabins, flumes, and the shafts are open.(20 years ago when I found most of these they were in better shape) Have access to Elizabeth / Black Gold mine in Pleasant Valley area. Mostly old foundations, out house debri (1960's), 2 man outhouse, open shafts, and the shaft elevator is still on site. It was part of the American river. You can find Sea shells on top of the ridge and the gravel still has color. There was more access to the dozen or so shafts in the area but property owners fencedtheir land over the years. Below Diamond Springs are a few open shafts in the canyon.
Sirg2424 05-28-2009, 12:17 PM A buddy’s dad has a mine entrance and at least one or two vent shafts on his 40 acres in Amador county ca. He had some guys recently working the left over stuff out side the mine and they where finding like square nails, an old hatchet head, and other stuff. They think the mine is around 100 to 150 years old due to what they where finding.
