ok, I have read thru the 14bt bible and searched around here and on the net but havent quite found an answer, is there any way to identify what chevy trucks have a 14bt stock with 4.56s, and a detroit? or is it just luck of the draw?...

If you are hunting at the pick a part by yourself, it is luck of the draw unless you want to remove the diff cover and go to counting.

You could always get a vin decoder and see what vin numbers have the 4.56 option, if any and hunt that way,

Or any decent junk yard will have it noted what gear ratio is in it and whether or not it has the locker,

i do not personally know of any specific vehicle that has the 4.56 gear ratio or the locker, right off the top of my head.

A little research for factory options might be a little help.

The CUCV Pickups had 4.56 and detroits from the factory. To my knowledge that is the only one that did.

You can pull the cover in a yard and read the numbers stamped on the ring gear to find the ratio. To see if it has a detroit look in the "windows" on the carrier, if there is a spring it has a detroit.

As already mentioned the military CUCVs are the only ones I know of on a regular basis that came with 4.56 and a Detroit. There are some civvy versions with 4.56 but appear to be fairly rare, but I have never heard of (not meaning they don't exist) a civvy version with a Detroit from the factory.

thanks for the info, ya I figured a day at pic a part with a cordless impact was going to be my best option.

Like others have stated, I havn't seen any civilian models that came with a detroit. I have saw a couple cab and chasis models from the '80's and a couple newer 1-ton single wheel models(a '91 and a '96) that came with 4.56's.

I have only found one 14bolt with 4.56's but no locker, it came in a mid/late 70's 3/4 ton with the 250 six banger and the 4spd. It also had the D-44 up front with the large hubs.
