Hey Mopar_girl..........You asked for some pics of the ladder at Slickrock.......... a couple wks ago I ran into this real Cutiepie on the trail in a brand new totally stock KJ........she really knew her stuff.......but her rig was so stock she just about got stuck on everything, but we had to place a few rocks ( maybe a lot ) and give her a few ( maybe a lot ) of tugs & drags but she was able to exit the trail at the Spicier end before dark with minor body damage and a lot of fun memories

In fact Im heading up to Slickrock in the morning.........and seeing if I can rescue some more cuties on the trail....... I tried posting some pics but Im on a dial up connection up here

ok I tried to post again for ya,,,,,,,:D:D:D:D ENJOY you might recognize her

I don’t under stand why some people have to build there rigs to the point that in order to have a challenge they must drive off of the trial. I was on the Hi-Lo’s run last weekend and some yoyo had to drive off of the trail on to a rock and got stuck. Ever one on the run drove past him about 50% of the group chewed him a new one. I was on Slick Rock everyone I see was on the trail.
If the trail is not enough of a challenge for you, go find one that is and stay away from the ones that are not a challenge for you
STAY ON THE TRAIL!!!

Bebe
08-20-2008, 02:46 PM
They are all wannabe rock crawlers and racers.

That is my only beef with overly built rigs. If you can spend the time and money to build that shit, take it a step further and build yourself a course.

Wheeling is about trail riding. Challenging trails are fun. But slickrock is hardly challenging. If you were there to fish, camp and enjoy the scenery, fine.

BUT STAY ON THE FUCKING TRAIL GOD DAMMIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why is Slickrock such a big deal?

BECAUSE IT BORDERS A WILDERNESS AREA!!!!

So after you get done reading this, call all your little turd friends and tell them Bebe's on the warpath at Slick Rock Trail.

Fluke

actually there were three other jeeps that werent with me going up the same line and there was plenty of evidence of other rigs going up the same line so as far as i could tell i was far from going off the trail and have no intention of getting any trail closed. i would not go off the trail unless i absulutley had to and i defenitly did not have to.:flipoff2:

highly capable and built rigs don't drive off trails, people do. :shaking:

just as many stock rigs drive off designated trails as built rigs do. It is the owners and drivers of OHV vehicles of all descriptions that we need to educate about the importance of staying on the trail and tread lightly.

So why did you? Just cuz some other guys went off trail dosnt mean you need to add to it. STAY ON THE TRAIL!!!! its pretty apparent where the trail gose out there, using some good judgement you can stay on the trail. Dont be stupid dont ruin it for eveyrone else.

Watch the attitude, or you will be walking the plank.

i have run slickrock many times, last monday and tuesday most recently...in flukes defense, if you are unfamiliar with the trail it can be a little confusing around the area of the camp just past the bridge from the utica direction....

a few years ago i was 'gently' pointed out by some fellow wheelers that i was in fact off the actual trail in that area...i appreciated there info as well as there demeanor while lecturing me...

now i know...and instructed my friends who were tempted by some other challenging lines that that infact wasnt the trail...they had never been there and it looked legit to them as well...

maybe we need to put up a couple signs that better explain that specific area?

Oooooh.....we have a toughie here.....

No, this may not end well. But it could. If you want to help maintain the trail, then we can do the right thing.

Try to keep up here:

Route designation will soon be underway in the Stanislaus.

When all the "Ologists" (a term we use for Forest Service Scientists) start poking around all the OHV and 4x4 trails in your "yard" and they just happen to see resource damage on an unmaintained trail bordering a coveted Wilderness area, guess what happens next?

They put on their "what if" hats and start catastrophising about all the "HORRIBLE" things that could potentially happen to that coveted Wilderness area. Why, because the evidence will show that there is IRRESPONSIBLE OHV USE occuring within yards/feet of the coveted "Wilderness area".

Do you think for a second that they will hesitate to yank that trail because of the "potential" for damage?

Do you know what will happen if you get caught damaging resources next to that coveted Wilderness area?

Tickets for sure. Fines for sure, and there is even a potential for inprisonment.

Smarten up, and know that every time you go off trail you have shortened the life of that trail. Not just for your own use...but for MY use and the use of everyone else that wheels there.

So, if you have a problem with me shooting off my mouth, say it to me in person when I'm there helping the FS block that bypass, clean up your trash, or rehabing all the ferns that have been mowed down by asshats like you.

glad to see people helping out with maintaining slockrock. i ran the trail for the first time last year and enjoyed it. came back this year august 10 (sunday) and entered from the alpine lake side of the trail. camped approx. 1 mile in along the river where all the other camp sites are. there is a large parking area next to the trail rimmed with large rocks. it is obvious the rocks were placed there along the trail and the parking area to keep vehicles out of the river area. these are very large boulders and rocks. i unloaded my jeep and carried my camping gear down to the camp sites.it was obvious several vehicles had driven over/through the rock barricade and parked vehicles next to the river as well as crossing the river and camping on the other side of it.tire tracs in decomposed granite are easy to spot. placing some signs at this area would also probably be a good idea.while i'm on the subject of respecting this trail it saddened me to see all the shit stained toilet paper laying all over the area including right next to the river. there was also 7 beer cans in the river-1 submerged and the other 6 floating on top against a small tree limb laying accross the river. there was also a can tied to a string which was tied to a tree limb that was used for target practice.it was still hanging from the tree when i set up my camp. wonder where all them bullets/pellets went after they passed through the aluminum can. i spent approx 3 hours of my vacation cleaning up the t.p. paper and shit, retrieving the cans out of the river and picking up the expired corks from wine/champagine bottles laying around my new camp from previous campers. spent another hour the next morning in camp picking up bottle caps, cig. butts, small pieces of plastic, paper etc.while drinking my morning coffee.when i was done the camping area was clean and i no longer felt like i was camped out at the local dump. i did not see any body else up there camped in the area i was at. i'm guessing this was a aculmination(sp?) of multiple camping trips from people over the last couple of months. when i camped at this same spot last year it was clean.when i left this spot it was clean. i can only hope it will stay that way or we will probably all lose the use of this trail one day if this continues.

THANKS A MILLION, DAVE!!!

We need more responsible 4wheelers like you. If it makes you feel any better, I (and my entire group of 'wheeling buddies) do exactly the same thing you do - so you're NOT alone in cleaning up after the few bad apples.

I've never seen Slickrock as dirty as you've described it, so I would suspect it was one or two irresponsible groups who could be blamed for the garbage you saw. This is generally a clean, respected, well-cared-for trail, in part because it has so much less traffic than other trails, like the Rubicon for instance.

Stainless Steel Dave:

Thank you.

I know the area you are talking about, and I have seen folks on the other side of the creek. Makes me angry, but what are you gonna do. That's right, sign it, add some more barriers, and patrol it.

We are getting closer to scheduling this clean-up/maintenace. I'd like to invote you to join us, even if it's just to meet you and thank you in person.

9/6 is the date. Hope you can make it.

Bebe

Just FYI as you can see here, everything on the opposite side of the creek is Wilderness area.

So again, stay on the trail, keep your vehicles out of the creek except for the 1 designated crossing.

I'm guessing/hoping it was left over from a Holiday weekend (when all the asshats & their mothers come out).

However, I've noticed that Utica & Union are unusually popular/crowded this year.
I was up last weekend, & every single camping spot along Utica was filled....
Some folks were even camped in various groves along the fire road 100s of yards & hills away from the lake.

A friend was up the weekend before (not wheel, just to relax). They went up Thursday night late specifically trying to get a good campsight at least in sight of the lake. They were rather surprised that virtually all the good spots were taken... Ended up camping just down the trail a bit by the river.

It used only be like the above on Holiday weekends.

Seeing this thread on slick rock has prompted me after 20 years of 4 wheel driving to register, so thanks! I do love the idea of cleaning up slick rock and the first one to agree that everyone should stay on the trail, but I would like to pose somewhat of an opposing opinion on this thread. I've been camping and 4 wheeling at slick rock with the-gang since 1990 and love the area and the Sunday drive through the trail. The trail--over the 18 years I've driven it has changed alot. People get stuck or break down and move rocks or just plain don't think and go off the trail and "make a new trail". After a while the "new trail" seems to look just like the old and then starts to become a part of the trail. So the question is when does the "new trail" become apart of the old and then becomes okay to use? ever? I pose this in response to Bebe's posting #25 stating its "obvious" that there is only one trail for slick rock until you get to the ladder and then its "obvious" that there is two (2). Hate to say this, and I'm sure some folks have been doing the trail for more than the 18 years I have--there are NOT two ways to go up that ladder, there's one. Always has been until about 5 years ago when some folks decided the ladder wasn't challenging enough but thought it would be great to go to the left. They went over some pretty nice boulders to make this happen, however you don't see that now as it looks like the "easy" way out. Well, they ended up moving those boulders over the years which are down at the bottom broken up. Now after 5 years anyone who comes upon this might mistakenly think the trail goes two ways. Not true. Happy to provide pictures of what the ladder looked like many years ago vs what it looks like today because the trail has actually become a new trail. If you are going to lecture folks about staying on the trail then you should know the trail well enough and two the second point I made when does the "new trail" someone forged become known as the trail? and okay to use? As Bebe points out she thought there were two ways, she didn't know it wasn't because it sure looks like it is.
I was the jeep that passed the hummers at the bottom of the ladder (they must have taken a break for a good hour) the weekend of August 17th and I made it up without moving rocks and also went up the ladder way.
I won't be able to join the team on the 6th but sure wish I could. All I ask is that you respect the area when and if you move and winch boulders/rocks to close the areas of the trail you deem are off trail. Moving rocks and boulders is what messed up the trail to begin with many a year ago and plus moving boulders in the wilderness area is illegal and could cause a fine. I'd ask you bring whatever you plan to use so you can respect the area.

Meems you are correct the trail to the left of the ladder (waterfall as I have know it for 25 years) is a user created bypass and I refuse to use it!
I also agree about moving rocks to block off the folks that leave the trail. I would think we need to submit a plan to the Forest Service and have it approved be for any work is begun.
I also consider an excessive amount of signs an eyesore. Therefore signage must be done with respect of the beauty of the trail.
I will not be able to make the 6th but I’m looking forward to working on this project with all of you in the near future.
Stay on the Trail

08-24-2008, 09:01 PM
Meems and kcjeep,

I can assure you that only approved forest service management practices will be allowed.

(No boulders will be used in blocking bypasses, only FS can do that)

A plan has been approved by Lonnie Allison, OHV Coordinator, and he will be onsite, along with Law Enforcement to assist the team in their projects on the 6th.

As far as the OHV coordinator is concerned, there are two paths up the ladder. Thats where that came from.

And you are right, all trails change every year. I spent the entire weekend on the Rubicon for the 3rd time this year. And the difference in the trail from the June workday to yesterday was amazing.

That said, we really have no control over how a trail changes, but as it changes, so do the elements of water and earth. We can mitigate.

If a rock is spun into the trail where a water bar used to be, over a summer change to the trail can occur just because the soil isn't draining as it once did, and people go around the rock instead of over it, or moving it.

That's how routes change. A tree falls, a rock rolls. So a regular maintenance schedule for slick rock could easily prevent this change.

It sounds to me like your history and knowledge could go a long way with FOSROK. We could use your help!

I get praise from some and criticism from others. meh, it is what it is. Lets just get this trail back in shape and educate the users that love it as much as I.

And I'm just as human as anyone else, I get pissed and fed up with the BS.

Sorry I blew my top, but we did accomplish something.

And meems, we waited to over 2 hours to get our turn at the ladder.

I last visited the Slick Rock Trail in 1986. My family and I used to archery hunt along the Highway 4 corridor every summer. We spent alot of time on the "back roads" in that area. Back then, I was still relativly new to four wheeling and thoroughly enjoyed all the trails that were available. Slick Rock being one of them. I moved from the valley to Northern CA and haven't been down that trail in 22 years. From the photos and all the write-ups, sounds like alot has changed. All that has inspired me to dig up some old photos of the trail. Hope everyone has a great and successful time on the "clean-up" scheduled in Sept. And thanks for all the hard work in keeping these trails open. Maybe some day I'll get back down there for one more run.

. its a judgement call, if it looks like a line then take it, dont make your own.

That is partially where the problem begins! People will take a new "harder" line, off of the trail. Then others coming through, only assume that is actually part of the trail and take that same route.....then the next guy comes and does the same thing, and the next and so on and so on!

So Stay on the F___ng trail!

Yes, Left of the ladder. They are going up Duck creek sweeping right about 50-60 feet, the vegetation continues for about 60 more feet towards the "granite".

Original trails do not recover that fast. I wish they did.

And no, I drive the Black H3. And no one in our group was off trail. Ever.

Why don't you just come out and work with us next weekend?

The only way to be rid of your enemies is to make friends.

If you want us, (there is more that just me involved here) to back off the locals, then it's time you step up. We can help you get started, support and educate.

But we need your knowledge of the trail. My history only goes back 3 years.

I understand it may be a little embarassing, like a neighbor mowing another neighbors lawn cuz he's too lazy to do it, or because he likes the look of over grown weeds, but the end result is a well taken care of yard. Everybody in the neighborhood breathes a little easier.

There is something to be said about Aesthetic Value.

Trash, shit, white flowers and flattened ferns don't look good. Nobody likes it, at least the ones who care.

We care, so we are getting our butts out there and making it right.

I personally don't give a rats ass who's responsible, I just want it fixed. And I want the BS behavior stopped.

I have been trying NOT to reply to this thread but I could not hold back.

First off, I will freely admit that I have been hard on the forest in the past, ESPECIALLY when I was younger and did not know any better, or understood the consequences. In fact, in one of my very first posts on Pirate, I posted up how I was flying down a dirt trail flinging mud on a trailer park... I got flamed so bad by people on this board, that anything Bebe has said to you sounds like pillow talk.

Whether or not the pics you posted were legit, Here's what I am asking you guys to think about before you go off on Bebe:

You need to understand WHO she is. She is one of the nicest and most caring people that I have ever met. Everyone who has ever met her considers her a "Good Person" (With the exception of the people who want to CLOSE our trails) She is a great person and she is OBSESSED with keeping our trails open. She has experienced many trail closures FIRST HAND, and it hurts her every time a trail closes...

So if she calls you to the carpet for a picture that she thinks the "other side" may use against us, or asks you to remove it, don't take it personally. Yeah, the pics maybe legit, but can you blame her for being wary? For Bebe, EVERY TRAIL IS SACRED.

Three years ago, I was leaking fluid outta my axle on the Con. Scott and Dennis from RTF just gave me this look: :shaking: Did I talk shit back to them? No, I knew I was wrong and felt embarrassed.

I am sorry if you felt Camo was talking down to you. IMO, It seems that you have NO IDEA who he is. Which tells me that you may not have been in this sport that long. He is a guy that has been in this sport and desert racing for years, he has run multi-million dollar companies, he co-owns this website (the largest off-road site in the world), he has won the Baja 1,000 in the 1,700 class, he basically INVENTED the F-toy, he is very involved in keeping our access to our trails, nearly every major 4x4 club knows who he is, and even though many people give him shit, he is a leader in the OHV community. And you told him to fuck off.

If it sounds like I am swinging off his nuts, I am. Becuase whether you like him or not, the man deserves repect for what he has done and IS doing for sport. All we know about you guys are that you are some new club that posted up a few questionable pics, and then talked shit to us when we called you on it. Do you have any idea how bad the situation is with our trails closing all around us?

We have extended an olive branch here. No one said you are the "evil bad-guy of Slick Rock" We WANT to work with you on this trail becuase we WANT to keep that trail open, and you turn down this invitation?

Help me to understand WHY you did that, becuase the "I do not know if I will be able to control myself around you" excuse does not work.

We are on the same team.

Your buggy would be overkill. :D The runner will have no problems, hell, we took 3 H1's through and all they suffered was some rocker panel scrapes.

We need the locals!

We need a Trail Patrol !

We need regular users to take a stand against the dangerous behavior that will get that trail closed.

You have to believe me when I say htey can do it with out warning. One day open, the next day a gate.

Being proactive and protective is the only way.

I didnt even mention bebes name in that thread!

I didnt spray the skull and crossbones on the rocks at slickrock ,but have been blamed for that stupidity also!:mad3:
I promise to do my share to cleanup the trail ALWAYS when im there but i have no urge,AT ALL, to meet you camo ,bebe or any of your friends EVER!
I have been off trail a few times but ive been set straight about and wont do it any more!I am not big into tree hugging or trail loving /politics so from now on i dont plan on going to slickrock anymore because people like you and your nut swinging buddies have been poorly mis informed and have ruined it for me, getting sick of the whining ,so again dont plan on seeing me on the cleanup day! You sure seem awfully interested in me personally, not sure why ,

I will tell you why.

because another one of the trails we all cherish is being threatened by closure. The trail is Slick rock.

Your Screen Name implies that you are a slick rock local and we need the help and leadership of the local community to fight for the survival of the trail.

I singled you out of the crowd because you had enuff balls to tell me to fuck off. So I figured you have enuff balls to tell the people who want to close your namesake trail to do the same.

The best way to tell those people that want to close the trail to FUCK OFF is to get involved with keeping the trail and it's users in compliance with the BULLSHIT regulations imposed on use as users and fighting to keep it open.

Bottom line is that Slick Rock trail is in danger of being close and we need your local leadership in saving it.

hate to be the guy to heave that responsibility on your but You are the only one I see that has the balls to lead this fight and get the locals inline with the task at hand.

If any of you would like to meet the locals that use the trail more than anyone else,a group of about 40 of us will be camped up there this weekend! I don't think any of the locals will be there for the clean up on the 6th. The guy that owns the big beat cj with orange beadlocks is getting married that day! If a trail patrol is needed let me know i am in the process of building a toyota pickup just for that trail! It is pretty boring up there in my landcruiser, guess it is too built nowadays. It sucks that all of you people had to start pointing fingers at slickrock mafia, he is one of the most respectful and nicest guys you could meet until you piss him off that is!!:mad3: He is one of my best friends also. As for all the trash and shit piles up there is bullshit, believe it or not most of it is from the citiots that come up here and camp.I am not going to let anyone on here know where we all camp at,gauranteed you can look around all you want and won't find a trace of trash or turds from us. The only thing that will give away our campsite is a firepit! PACK IT IN PACK IT OUT!!! :smokin: Oh yeah the forest service can't shut a trail down that is not forest service property!!

I saw 2 80s-90s 2wds at Stockton 3 weeks ago.

And a 79 4x4 complete, minus hubs at a local yard Friday.

I went to Fairfield twice last year.
First time they had a 90s runner, second time they had an FJ60 with complete drivetrain (body & engine were missing parts).

So, they are popping up now & then.
