I have a 71 front axle housing that has been ground so 76 FJ-40 birfields will fit. I also am running the knuckles and disk brakes off of the 76 FJ-40. I have Warn hubs and am running a c-clip on the end of my Birfield.
So, i can run any fine spline, disk brake birfield from a FJ or a mini truck but i will have to use a fender bolt insted of the c-clip if i use minitruck birfields.

Correct. Also, the 79+ birf is even a little bigger than the 76-78 birf, so a little more grinding MAY be required to fit it inside the ball.

So the 76-78 FJ Birfield is special and all of the 79 and newer cruiser Birfields and all of the Mini Birfields are the same.

Correct, and the later are more desirable. When used with Asin hubs you have the best combination, a strong, easy to engage/disengage mechanism, that requires only a quarter turn to operate.
The later knuckles are stronger too because the steering arms are beefier.
