93 4 runner 3.0 i did a compretion check had good in all [135 lb+] but #6 it had 10 did a wet test it went to 25 lb. no noticable water in oil or oil in water i removed the drivers side head [dam what a PITA  ] i was hoping to find a burnt valve but no pieces missing the #6 pistin looks cleaner then the others but the head at the valves is black and coated. the inside of the exhaust manifold on #6 is black and moist and the intake the same all others are dry.if it was water the head would be clean yes or no ?? but the manifold ports are wet so could this still be a HG no noticeable HG leaks i would think a cracked head would atleast give some compretion.the cylinder walls are smooth no scratches. i am tacking it to a head shop tomarrow but would like some input from you what do you think..and i was told there was a recall on the HG on this year what was that for and what was the fix how do i findout if it has been fixed on this rig i just got it saterday thanx

the fix for the recall was new headgaskets. only way i know to find out if it has been done is previous owner. i have a 90 with the 3.0 and had a cylinder at 55psi. i caught it early enough to get the compression back to 160+psi by adjusting the valves with out the valve burning. is there any wear on the back of the cam lob for your cyclinder #6 intake or exhaust valve? if there is wear the valve may not be closing completely as mine was. the valve seats have a tendencey to seat so they don't close completely and you loss compression and burn valves if they are not adjusted. Absolutely there is a recall on those gaskets. You can give your VIN# to any dealer and they can tell if the work has been done (you dont need previous owner to tell you). Bassically V6's from 89-95 were affected and the problem evidently was a scramble to get away from asbestos use in gaskets, what they came up with didnt work too well.

#6 is the most common place the let go. I took my '93 Runner in just as a mtter of compliance and you could see where it was about to blow. The dealer that did mine said new gaskets were better and they haven't gotten one back yet that they had fixed.

Ask dealer if it's been done on your truck and maybe they'll let you tow it in and finish the work under warranty.
