I have all this Toy running gear and want to upgrade axles and tires. I have a 7M toy 5 speed tranny duel cases. I am looking at a set of rockwells and 44 or bigger tires. My question is how wel will my Toy stuff hold up to the big axles and tires? I am only gona run a cab and small flatbed on the frame and my even go with a tube rear. Will the toy cases hold up or should I upgrade now? I zam also looking at running coilovers.

From a guy running 44's with a 22R, stock five-speed, 2.28 into 4.7 crawler...
It'll never work. Don't even try. Especially not with coil springs. :)

When you get bored with the negativity, feel free to browse http://www.rockstomper.com/images/products/custom/shopjunk/hybrid for a pictorial quasi-history of how to make it work.

There's a guy here in KC that is putting rockwells under an 84 4runner he got out in CO. Said he made a pit stop at your shop....he said the Mantis is even more appealing in person :D I'm light years behind on this whole "go big" trend :flipoff2:

Well I think mine works pretty good for now working
:flipoff2:

20r/toy4 speed/triple cases/rockwell axles/coil sprung front, 1/4 elliptic rear/currently 39.5's going bigger.

Running Johnson Valley and Rubicon and it does well. MAKE IT WORK!

If you go to Tellico on a good weekend you'll probly need 4 hands to count all the rig's that fit that description. That was a silly ?:flipoff2:

you ever thought that those rockwells might not be up to the task of handling all that toyota power?? :flipoff2:

My only question would be what toy 5 sp? If it's a turbo trannie (R151) I wouldn't worry. With the 7M and all the weight on the other end, it might prove to be the weak link. That and the output shaft on the transfer case, but allpro has the upgrade for that.

Hey Scott, I thought I saw somewhere that your rig had d60 front and a 14bolt rear, in the pics it looked like a d44 and a 9in.?? What size all thread is that for the coil spring adjustors? Looks Real Good!

I think I am gona try it but pic up an allpro shaft and hope that is what goes if anything does. I am gonna go tomm. and try to get the axles and if he wont sell them I am gonna take another route and go 4 wheel steering. But I cant pass up 1700 for coilovers and a set of rockwels if he is still gonna sell them. I hope to have it together some time this fall. If I had any buddies that could help me insted of getting me drunk I could get it done faster but Oh well it always get fun at the shop after a few.

It had a D44 and a 9" for a while. The D44 didn't last real long, so it's been swapped out to a D60.

The 9" is still going--one exploded axle shaft, but considering that it's running stock 31 spline Ford shafts, not even a decent aftermarket axle, that's (IMHO) not bad.

Not sure where you saw that it had a 14 bolt rear... it's never had that. The closest a 14 bolt's ever been to it, is when I back into it with my tow rig (sure is nice to be able to do that :) ) in the driveway.

The spring adjusters are 1" fine thread. They're more or less poor-man's circle-track weight jacks.

Bones, it just gets uglier, the more you see of it. :) Actually, I got tired of being behind the times, and had the opportunity to take a huge leap forward. Funny thing is, my huge leap forward, is what the guys in Tennessee and thereabouts, have been doing for years.

Finally, everyone else is catching on!!!!

Sorry about that....I guess I just imagined it or something.

Hey, no worries there. If I had a 14-bolt, I wouldn't break it. Just drag it around everywhere... I drag that frickin' 60 on everything. I even drag the *tubes*. I think I need bigger tires so I stop dragging my axle tubes... yeah, that's the solution. Beats the heck out of learning to drive ('cause we all know how bad a driver I am--a flop a month is testament to that :) )

What you need Scott, are 53" Michelins and Unimog axles. How about 26" of clearance under the differential, and 3"+ diameter stub shafts!

Thats what I am doing anyway. I have the tires already, and the axles will be on their way from Germany soon hopefully.

Can you tell I am a Tennessee Hillbilly??

BTW, Scott, I have to say that your truck was a big inspiration for my project. Despite having 53" tires, and 6" of lift in the axles, the top of my cage is only 7' tall. Allot of people are going to think it looks really funny sitting like that though. I like it.

Justin,
Yes I do work down here with shaffer. Are you friends with him and Roy and that gang? I think Shaffer has locked his brown truck fr and rear now. Maybe we will get him out and let him break that thing.

Do you ride at winrock???

Yea, I went to highschool with all them....I met you one night over at Grayson when we were mounting Jon Hursts 42's......I havn't riden windrock in a while, I'm trying to figure out some ignition problems, but I should be able to ride in a couple weeks.

Last time I was over there he had the arb in the front and all the lines run, but hadn't put his switch in yet, but he did get that military compressor to work and put in storage tanks

fawkin'aye now that's the rig i'm talkin about.. at least i'm not the only one that thinks this way.. my rig's gonna look something like that.. i'm i'm doing triple cases, cause i got plenty room, get to keep strong stock gears, and still lower and cheaper than a double setup w/ 4.7's in the rear =] nice!

Got my axles and coilover yesterday. I am gonna have to change the springs on my shocks, They are 400 and 450# springs. I dont think my rig will ever make that combo move up and down. Guess when the heat breaks I will be a busy little boy.
