We have a pretty decent deal on the Lowrance 540 series units. Here is a link if you want some more info.

As far as the radio and intercom stuff... I would take a look at the prerunner package we have. I can put one together for a little less money with helmet kits instead of the headsets shown....

Poly is as good a deal as any on the Lowrance so if you go that route I'd order from them, but if you're looking to save a few dollars look into the Eagle 500c and 600c, same units as the Lowrance 480c and 540c respectively the only difference is that they don't have the volt meter on the display and they don't read top speed and lap times, both are somewhat useless features. The antenna hook-up is also different, but the Eagle is far far better than the Lowrance antenna hook-up. My 500c was $350 shipped and has worked at ever desert race for chasing and we've thrown it in friends trucks when they race, sees to always work perfectly.

For race radios, if you're local call Mobile Radio in Laguna Beach, Chris Russell over there sets up all sorts of military and aviation radio equipment, but also sets up all our junk, he does a great job. A crappy radio with a propper set-up is 100x better than a good radio that's been set-up poorly. Get your antenna tuned, get the right kind of antenna and you'll be much happier.

I bought all my stuff from Poly Performance. In fact I am getting a second radio for the night race this weekend.

They know their stuff.

Edit: Everybody beat me to it...Doh!

Dave, I looked at the 540's on your site. There is the 540, and 540c. The only difference I can see between the two is that the "c" is a color screen. Is that correct? Jason and I also need to get this setup before KOH.

For radios, I would give Scott at Rock Buggy Supply a call. We did a group buy for KOH 08 from him. http://rockbuggysupply.com/index.htm

I picked up my Lowrance 540 from Fry's. I bought it in the Anaheim location (online showed "sold out"): http://shop3.frys.com/product/5375978;jsessionid=2DcIjBqug0+uf69U2+Grkg**.node2? site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG

Quick question. If I want to load the lucerne course onto my 540c, can I just copy the file onto my SD card, or do I need some type of software to manipulate it?

Thanks.

PM me your email address. I have a "cheat sheet" for the 540 that should help with this.:)

Just copy it, your good to go unless you want to manipulate it with your PC.

PM'd and thanks.

For this weekend all I want is the course in the chase truck. In the future (ie. baja) I may want to modify. I do it all the time with my little Garmin.

Total GPS newb here....

The 540c looks like the one to get for screen size and options, once you purchase the GPS, you then need to download maps of various locations correct?

Where do you get these maps? Is there a detailed map of JV and the Hammer trails?

that 10 inch screen is the sickest thing i've ever used!!! you can see 2 miles of race course, and with the right software to put actualy words on your waypoint's for direction and caution, you can read them clearly, it's so bad ass...

with my wicked far sightedness i actually had to push my head back into teh seat to see the screen clearer because the display was SO big it wouldn't come into focus for me.

Tim,

I am also a newb, but here is what little I know about the 540. You don't "need" to download maps with the 540 for it to function, but with a brand new unit, the desert sections appear as a white background and the unit only identifies the major highways and roads out near JV. If you are looking for maps of JV, and the Hammer Trails, you can probably get the KOH 08 map fairly easily (I have it:D) and the 09 course will be released to be downloaded a day or two before the race. Hopefully Jeff and Dave will route the desert sections west of the 08 course where the MORE and MDR races are held. I believe the Lucerne courses of MORE and MDR are availble online to be downloaded. ;)

I am going to try to go to one of PCI classes on the 540 to learn more about it and I have their "cheat sheet" on the 540 if you want me to send it to you.:)

I am wondering if this program might help provide a bit more detail to be downloaded into the system: http://www.pciraceradios.com/ProductDetail.jsp?LISTID=4881266590365942529

I see there is also a 7200 with a 7" screen:

http://www.pciraceradios.com/product_images/106.jpg

So the first digit in the part number is indicative of the screen size diagonally.

540 = 5" screen
7200 = 7" screen
8200 = 8" screen

Wow I am already learning about GPS' :flipoff2:

Now I just need to find a Lowrance 1800C-HD, that would be the one to have! :laughing:

No way I could justify that $ for just running the KOH qualifier, I can hear myself saying to the wife " I know it costs more than our TV honey, but I really needed it for safety"

Think she'll fall for it?

i generally dont help the competition (no not really, i always do but probably shouldnt) but the speed is not the issue, we run a 7500c, i recommend the big one for obvious reasons.........if jr had it, bla bla bla..........

If JR would have took 30 seconds to strap in before wooding it, forcing his NAVIGATOR to drive the car, maybe his navigator could have been doing the job he was supposed to be doing, and thus not missing the corner:laughing::laughing:

buy a small gps if you like , i dont care, but if i was buying a fresh one i would buy the big one, for reasons in this thread that you cant/dont do on a small screen................if you are going slow and just trying to finish it does not make any difference............imo
