: I just picked up a Cannondale Super V 700 Carbon
ItsaCJ6 08-13-2008, 07:09 PM It needs a little work, but the price was Nice!
The Super Fatty front fork was replace with a older Rock Shock Maybe 80mm. I need a new front shock and I am unsure of what to look for. (Almost complete Newbie) Typical riding will be trails. I'm lazy, so up hill with be the easiest way possible..DH trails are a blast...:D To clarify ... I can take the Gondola up..
I can't see needing a 180mm but what about a 140-160 is it worth it? Would it suck on the trails.
I had a Trek 930 up until the wife decided she liked it better than her bike, hence the Super V.

Congrats on the new ride. IMHO, I'd ditch the 80mm RS front fork and upgrade to something like a Fox with at least 110mm. 180mm would be well worth it for the trails around Telluride, plus you can lock most of these newer forks out for the uphills. One thing you want to watch is the geometry angle of your new front fork and how it fits with the rest of the bike. You should make sure the new front fork won't change the bikes angles too much.

Well the RS shock is dead, so it's out the door. I was concerned that I would loose turning radius with the 180 and that, that might be a trail issue.
I have been looking at the remote locking forks and I can see that I could set it and lock it down for the uphills. I rally don't want to spend a fortune on it but I need something, and well, broken parts always scream UPGRADE!!
Midwestzj 08-18-2008, 10:16 AM DO NOT get anything over 100mm. really you shouldn't go over 80mm and here's why: The headtube is designed at a certain angle with the 80mm travel fork and if you lengthen it the steering will change significantly, just think of a chopper motorcycle versus a street bike. Also the headtube was designed for an 80mm fork and if you put a longer one on it gives the fork more leverage against the head tube and could rip it off.
Robert 08-18-2008, 06:48 PM What size (diameter) headtube does that thing have?
Hopefully the newer standard 1.125". A lot of older bikes used a 1" HT. AFAIK, only Marzochi offers a 'new' fork with a 1" tube. Something to think about.
ItsaCJ6 08-22-2008, 06:11 PM I looked up the Cannondale shock length (max length) guide... and 525mm is max lenght for this bike. The supper flatty that come on the bike is 487mm with an 80mm stroke. So I am assuming I can increase to a 120mm stroke with no problem, as long as I do not exceed 525mm. I know that fudges by 2mm, but that sounds like it's close to the parameters.

For some reason I can't figure that out. But it does not look like 1 inch.
sawzallsammy 08-26-2008, 08:26 AM that bike should have a1.5" headset, most likely with a reducer in there to fit the standard 1 1/8" headset. take a close up picture of the stem and i can tell you for sure
maxyedor 08-27-2008, 05:19 PM Crackandfail/Cannondale runs their own headset, it's kind of a 1.5" but you need a custom headset for it no matter which fork you choose.
The travel number has little to do with the axel to crown length, some forks run very long for their travel, and running too long or short of a fork can really screw things up. I would run a shorter fork on that frame, the carbon Cannondale frames aren't known for their durrability, but then again neither are the aluminum ones.
sawzallsammy 08-29-2008, 04:33 PM ya I use to work at a shop that sold cannondales. we called them crackandfails
ItsaCJ6 09-06-2008, 07:44 AM I'll get a pic.
sawzallsammy 09-10-2008, 10:58 AM you don't need a custom headset but you do need an adaptor. it looks like you laready have one since you don't have a cannondale fork.
4x4mike 09-11-2008, 09:55 PM If it has a carbon rear end it's pretty old and will handle like crap if you put more than 80mm on the front. Keep an eye on it, people don't like Cannondales because they crack. Older ones did a lot more often than the newer ones.
FatTireFury12 09-13-2008, 03:21 PM DO NOT get anything over 100mm. really you shouldn't go over 80mm and here's why: The headtube is designed at a certain angle with the 80mm travel fork and if you lengthen it the steering will change significantly, just think of a chopper motorcycle versus a street bike. I agree, the bike will ride like total crap, stay around 100mm for a fork. If you 170mm of travel you will be better off getting a bike with a 67 or 69 degree gemoetry that is meant to have a tall fork like that. Not only will it ride like crap with the taller fork, but you could snap the headtube, and I have seen it done in that case.
ItsaCJ6 05-08-2009, 04:58 PM Update....... I thought I would just update this thread. I bought this RST Omega shock, it works great and I got it in 100mm.
