How many of you commute in your SASed rig? I currently commute in my DD 4runner which is still ifs. My 85 xcab is a handful on the freeway and I've had some scary experiences. I am seriously considering SASing the 4runner so i can wheel with the family, but I would need to be able to commute at least an hour each way with it on CA freeways and stop and go traffic.

So what are you running and how well does it do at 65-70 on the freeway?

I plan on running stock waggies, w/ allpro hysteer, 35 mtrs.

I drive mine nearly everyday, unless I can steal the wifes car with AC :flipoff2: Mine cruises at 60-75, that all depends on if I'm going up or dawn a hill :D Drive better than my old bone stock 83 that's for sure.

I drive mine a few days a week. My wife and I commute in our 99 runner. My 89 doesn't have AC. It handles about the same as when it was IFS. No pulling or handling troubles.

I commute in my rig every day. Cruises @ 70+ w/ no problems even w/o the sway bar, a little nicer handling/quicker-turning w/ the sway bar on. :)

hey-

I drive 40 miles a day- 5 days a week on a rear spool/front detroit, 5.29's, 35's. Freeway driving sucks tho- I hate driving down in Phx.

We usually have to "commute" to get to trails too- this weekend, I'll do 140 one way miles of interstate pavement poundin' to play on 60 miles of dirt trail. End up just cruzin' along at 70 and watch traffic go by :D

87 Runner Allpro SAS, 5.29's, Detroits, w/33in BFG Muds.

Drive it every day. No problems. Waiting for the 33's to wear out so I can get 35's.

Rides better than the shot IFS suspension did.

pickeledpigsfeet I'm sure you've seen pictures of my SAS'd 4Runner I sold. Even on 37s and spooled in the rear I put 5-600 miles on that thing a week. No big deal, it ran fine with traffic too 70+ MPH. It was my daily driver with home made just about everything :D

I've got an 86 SAS'd xtra cab without swaybar or steering stab, has standard x-over steering and other than unbalanced bias swampers handles fine and I 've had it up to 80 mph. If you get the front end geometry right there is no reason it shouldn't handle fine.

I have 33's YJ front and chevy rears. 4.88 and she does great on the HW. Drove from ElPaso to Omaha straight through 22 hours twice and accross Texas once with out even a shimmy. No sway bar or steering stabalizor

I drive mine everywhere, only vehicle

im trying to head up to the rubicon this saturday afternoon, then coming back and doing the highway 4 stuff later in the week or the next weekend. my timing chain is gettin noisy and i have no exo so im in camping mode for the trails not 'gettin it'....:D im gonna join a few guys this weekend at the rubicon, wanna come break off your ifs instead of cutting it off??

by the way i commute on a set of bald bfg 35's, not the big swampers:p but at 40psi you dont really notice them except that you have to downshift and sit at 4500 rpm in the mountains...(5th is worthless everyewhere...

IF you set up your SAS right WITH shocks AND proper steering geometry AND brakes AND balanced tires, it'll be as smooth as silk. Solid axle rigs have been around along time, it all depends on your conversion. I comute about 25 miles a day, which is nothing compared to a lot of guys around here, and I built mine with the trail in mind. It rides smooth, and brakes good, but has extreme body roll, barks the tires around every corner thanks to the spool. My springs are purposely soft to flex good. When my SX's are on it shakes like a dog passing a peach seed, but they're not balanced, and they do smooth out as they warm up. I'm sure if you went with some MTR's or BFG's you could get a decent ride, if that's what you want.

Basically I'm saying, you can build it and Dd it, it all depends on what your willing to put up with in your daily rig.

I commute mine all over the bay area. Drive over highway 17 twice a week and when I was going to Foothill I commuted 40mi round trip to school. It does 75 just fine (about 80 on the speedo) but since I still have some bugs in the steering/braking I like to keep it around 70 in the bay area.

99 taco with chevys out back and a custom pack of waggy/AP up front. RS 9ks up front and 5ks out back. 35x1250 BFG MTs. No sway bars. No stabilizer. Waggy dana 44 with ~0 degrees caster :D

What is wrong with your current SAS truck - more details on these "scary experiences" might be helpful.

Mine has a scary amount of body roll with the front shocks set on full-soft (which I never do), and used to have some truly scary death wobble. If you run a set of BFGs or MT/Rs and some high quality shocks, you won't have any problems. I only had the death wobble running 36" TSLs which are difficult to keep balanced, at best. I guess the out of balance tires kind of "set off" the front end, and things just went nuts from there... When I put on a set of bald 35s I've got for long-distance highway trips, it rides great and has noticeably more power. Those heavy TSLs take quite a bit more throttle to move.

Which is why I still can't decide if I want a new set of 36" TSLs, or 37" MT/Rs when these tires wear out.

That's why I went with MTR's. Lighter and better for double duty IMO. My 36" SX's did okay untill 60 mph (if I could get going that fast) then it would get reall shaky. When I got my MTR's put on, I had them see what one of my SX"s would take to balance....it was over 15oz. Now on flatter groud I can cruise at 70 easily, but still have to downshift on decent grades.

I've put nearly 20K miles on my truck since my SAS. It rides a little rougher than stock, but what do you expect with super swampers? It'll hold 70-80 mph easily, and handles nicely.

yeah I dont mind long rides in the truck either, but after about 4 hours of driving you have to piss every 2 hours....little bumpy after awhile i guess

I've got a 98 Tacoma Pre-Runner that I just dropped a D44 in with stock Waggies, 3in drop hanger, regular high steer, Rs9012's, 33x14.50 SSr's, Lockright, and 4.88's. I've had it up to almost 90mph on the interstate. Can run there all day if I want. Let go of the wheel and it runs straight. I do have a worn out Toy IFS box that I need to replace cause of a little steering wheel slop. Mine tends to pull a little into ruts in the road a little worse after the SAS, but I live with it. I'd drive it to Moab from Florida without a doubt. Like it was said in a few post, if you build it right, it'll roll right.
