: Supercab on a Singlecab Frame, OkcOffRoaders Bogger Build

Ok, i had another thread similar to this asking for pics, so i figured id start a different one for my bogger build......ill recap with the first post of my other thread and go from there.....

here is what i have now:

78 F-250 4x4 snowfighter chassis (original singlecab rusted beyond repair)
swapping on a 76 supercab body, with a small flatbed with rollcage and storage...
351m for now (swapping in my 460 bored .030 over later down the road)
C6 NP 205 60's front and rear
swapping out front inverted leaf w/ the rear 3/4 ton springs, putting 1/2 ton springs in the rear

now, i swapped the 205 in place of the original 203 (can we say doubler?) and now my driveshafts are the wrong length...so out back, im going to move my axle forward enough to make the rear shaft work, then try to find a front shaft or have mine redone...does that sound reasonable??

plus there is alot of framework to be done including making new crossmembers, and fabbing rear cab mounts...

ok, well i was in the shop saturday and FINALLY did the spring swap on my truck....the cab still isnt mounted properly so dont hate on the crookedness, it will be fixed this week...anyways, i put 1/2 ton springs out back, then moved my 3/4 tons up front...it gave me just shy of 4 inches of lift up front, and the back stayed pretty much the same....it moved my front axle forward 4 inches, which will give be a much better approach angle after i trim the fenders and lower grill....hopefully ill have the cab mounts on before next weekend, and have the driveshafts figured out... we shall see...here are some after lift pics....

Love those supercabs, especially shortened up. Almost built one myself.

We'll see how long the cab stays that nice :D

do the doubler now, worry about the shafts later

your probably going to have to do a 3 inch body lift on the front core support mounts and maybe a 1 or 2'' body lift on the front cab mounts it looks like

thats a nice condition cab too

i really want to do the doubler now, but that costs about a grand all together, and i dont have that kind of coin laying around...all the work im doing now is all about a skinny budget........im still debating on doing a body lift or not....i kinda want to keep the body as low as i can, and just lift the suspension and cut the fenders.....its really gonna depend on what works best when i fab up some rear cab mounts...right now there are no bushings under the rad support, and halfway back the cab its resting on the old singlecab rubber mounts, thats why its sitting slightly forward.....when i get the ubolts on the front axle, im going to lift the cab on the two post lift, take out the old rubber mounts to use for the rear mounts and tweak it back and forth, and up and down till i like the look of it, then build my mounts to fit....in the meantime, im gonna find some thick ass metal plate and see how much a machine shop will charge to cut me out a steering arm for crossover steering, then get me some DOM and 1 ton TRE's.....

yeah the truck that came from was a clean truck...it was a 76 2wd F-150 SC, with a 360 auto and AC.....i bought the cab and bed from my friend for 300 bucks, sold the bed for $200 to a guy on FTE that drove 8 hours from south dakota to oklahoma to pick it up......a couple months later my friend told me to come get the frame, he didnt want it anymore, he just kept the drivetrain.....so i got the cab mounts, shock mounts, and the 1/2 ton springs for my bogger and scrapped the frame (no buyers) and ended up making all my money back, so i basically got the cab for free....im even thinking about hooking up the AC just for the shits of it, plus how cool would it be to be rolling in AC through the pits?!?!

this is were i want to get the body to sit, maybe an inch or two higher in front, but im still working on how im gonna mount it yet....i have a question for anybody that might know....since i moved the axle forward, obviously i now have steering issues....my 3 1/2" dropped pitman arm should be here wednesday, so what company sells crossover arms for a HP king pin D60????? until i get a crossover arm, im going to buy some TRE's and make a short drag link (or just shorten my stock one) to be able to steer it around the shop, and to maybe do a test run or two out on the back lot....im wondering if that shortend drag link will cause a geometry issue with the steering, like not being able to turn one way or something.....

well its over a year later, my poor Ford was put on the backburner again...but in the past month or two ive been picking away at the huge list of must-do's for the old F-250 to be mobile again....i finally got the body bolted down, i used some leftover liftblocks i found under the radiator support and front cab mounts, since i didnt reuse the mount bushings it really only netted about 1" of BL....the rear cab mounts i had to make work a different way, but i couldnt find those pics so ill go into that later when i snap more pics....

these are the bolts i used for the fronts...i think they will hold!!

yeah it sucks ass, but i dont have any money to buy a crossover steering arm till after the holidays..so im stuck like chuck, but i can turn my wheels, which i couldnt do before...lol...believe me, its getting crossover steering and DOM links ASAP, if i dont get rockwells and full hydro first..

How did u go about gettin a build sheet? I'd like to get one on my 78

went to Ford.com and found the contact us button...gave them all the info i had on my truck (VIN, Door decals) and they mailed it to me in a couple weeks...i got them for both the dentsides ive had...

well, i guess he answered it as i was typing...but, just go to your local ford dealer ship, and as for a HVBoM sheet. Another sheet which is similar is the
GT/CS sheet. they were placed most vehicles, but some dealerships take them out, or they have been lost ect...but, like i said, the dealership should be able to get you one..
and it might solve finally where your truck was made..

and check your dam myspace..and write me back...f-in A

build sheets are cool to have, dont give much benefit, but still cool....i just used mine the other day, when my boss seen my truck i told him it came factory from Ford with a plow, he called bullshit, so i went home and dug out the sheet...now he is asking me to get it running so he can put his plow on it this winter...lol.....maybe i can put the old sno-fighter back in service..lol..at least make a little cash out of it anyways!!

Where exactly does it say the truck came with a plow on the build sheet? All I seen was snow plow package. If thats the same as my 01 with a plow package it was just some front end reinforcement and misc. crap to help it hold up better to the thrashing.

Or has anyone actually seen a factory plow for that matter? I'd love to have something like that straight from the factory!

OkcOffRoader
12-07-2009, 06:47 PM
thats a great question, not sure if it came straight outta of the plant with it on, or if they sent so many trucks to Meyer's Plows and had them installed before delivery...i was told by the PO that it had a Meyer's plow on it when he got it in '84...his buddy bought the truck from a PennDOT auction, PennDOT was the original buyer....he says PennDOT ordered their trucks ready to go, so they didnt have to pay someone to get them ready...

ok, i snapped some pics of the rear body mounts...remember, this is a 76 F-150 SC on a 78 regular cab longbed frame, so obviously all the body mounts didnt match up... the front four were just fine after i replaced the rotted mount tower for the front cab mounts...but since the frame is narrower than the 76's was, i had to improvise....what i did was i got the rear cab mount towers of the 76's frame and bolted them to the body..i measured every possible corner to make sure the cab is straight, then i had to cut and drill some thick plate steel to fill the gap between the mount and the frame...im probably going to make some shims to go on top of the frame, but a few people have told me it should be fine with the four bolts it has holding it on....what do you guys think??

Just a suggestion before you mangle those body mounts. Cut off the extending piece and use plate or angle to get you back onto the frame. bolt it through with 2 short bolts. If i understand what you're wanting to do, you will end up having to weld it to the body mount and it'll look like shit.

lol, sorry thats my nissan pathfinders shifter.... the pic is of the DOM, its what i sleeved my temporary draglink with....the F-250 has the original C6 auto, it had aN NP203 Tcase, but i swapped a 205 in it....

HalfFastFord, i was thinking about the angle iron idea yesterday!! its probably the way im gonna go...

ok, got myself motivated, talked my bro into bringing a drill and some bits over so i could move the rear axle forward....i wasnt sure how it would look moving the axle up 10 1/2 inches, but i think it turned out pretty cool...i moved the axle so i wouldnt have to make a rear drive shaft, simply put, it was free.....plus it shortened my wheelbase to 124 1/2 inches, should give me a little better turning radius......the crazy part about moving the axle was how i ended up squaring it all up...when i got the axle hooked to the ujoint, the top front hole on both hangers and both shackles lined up with factory holes in the frame that are in the exact same places on both sides, we just had to drill them out larger so the bolts would fit....we used a cherry picker to hold the rear of the truck up just enough to take the weight off the springs, that allowed us to just roll the axle forward easily holding it in place for measuring and drilling...its been over 4 years since a driveshaft has been hooked up in this truck, damn it feels good to have PARK again!!!! Here are a few pics:

not to sure about my shackle angle, was thinking wrong when i put it on and forgot to compensate for it dropping when the lift was let down..seems to pivot decent when weight is applied on the rear...

i put the radiator in it tonight, wired up the alternator, made a dizzy and coil harness out of three junkyard ones i picked up...i put a battery in just to see if it would catch fire or something, low and behold nothing fried, but the only thing i could get to come on was the headlights..lol...now its time to do some electrical work.....

Where did you run the wires for the Alt.? I am having to wire mine up as well...Mine would be slightly different as it has a diesel now, but any info is greatly appreciated. :)

OkcOffRoader
01-07-2010, 12:20 PM
well, i used the factory wires off the cab, but i had to splice on different ends because the motor and chassis are 78 and the cab is a 76, so all that was different were the ends, luckily i kept most of the harness off the old 78 cab.......when you do yours, buy a one wire internally regulated alternator, and just run it to the battery side of your solenoid... much easier that way, i would have done that, but the alt i have prolly only has about 50 miles of use on it, even though its over 5 years old...

guerilla.1, that would be a sight to see, you would prolyy have to cut into the cab to clearance for that...i moved my rear axle 10.5 inches up, and its still longer than a regularcab shortbed...unless your talking about a SC shortbed, then it would be about the same as mine i guess...

homelessduck
01-07-2010, 05:06 PM
Yea, I should have bought a one wire alt. The one I have has low miles though, and does work, so it's hard to rip it out and spend a few hundred $ on another one. From the diagrams I have seen it looks fairly easy to wire the external regulated ones. If I can find a good deal on a one wire alt. I will go that route.

Thanks.

Looks cool man, Im sure you inspected it but I would make sure the frame is in good shape. I'd probably yank it and put some chassis saver on it or something.

OkcOffRoader
01-08-2010, 05:54 PM
hey thanks for the compliments.......yeah that frame is rusty as hell..the very back was the worst, and its coming off...i wanted to POR the whole frame and box it too..but man, that was looking expensive when all said and done...this rig is going to be a strictly offroad toy, and im gonna go until the frame breaks, then find a better frame or a different project to bolt the parts too...really though, when the cab was off i powerwashed everything and looked up and down the frame for cracks or bends, but it all looked as good as a rusty old frame could be...now that i have the body mounts figured out, its very likely the cab is coming back off for some other work, cause putting it back in place will be much easier now..im adding 4" square tubing for crossmembers out back...after i moved the rear axle forward, i used my cherry picker to pick up one of the back wheels to see if i could get an idea of the flex it may have....it ended up picking up the whole back of the truck up and the front was still firm on the ground...i expected to see alot of frame twist, but it actuallly didnt flex at all, which was a surprise, cause its missing 3 rear crossmembers...if i decide to make it street legal again, when i get all the metal work done, ill take it to the shop i used to work at, pull the cab, sandblast the whole frame and axles, and POR it...hopefully...for now, i just wanna get in on the trails/pits/rocks or what the F ever i can find first....

Cool build so far. Any more pics or progress?

OkcOffRoader
04-06-2010, 05:53 PM
ok, it got warm out so im back at it....i started chasing wires down looking for the neutral safety switch harness......i finally found the cab harness under the dash, i was surprised to see it is just a flat 4 connector just like trailor lighting (NSS wires are the 3 red w/ black stripes)...so i got my spare trailor light pigtail out of my toolbox, spliced the right two wires together and plugged it in...then i turned the key and the motor cranked over..My God it was like the truck awoke, and spoke to me from a 5 year coma.....it didnt fire or anything cause the dizzy isnt in yet, but just the sound of the starter spinning and the motor rolling was music to my ears....im not a supporter of bypassing neutral safety switches at all, this is temporary and ill be wiring it in to the NSS thats on the tranny, but for now its a cool way of bypassing it...i also got my front driveshaft done and installed...i had to eliminate the double cardine(sp?) joint to clear the tranny pan, so i got a driveshaft slip yoke (the small part) from an 80s fullsize bronco, and it just so happened to have the same splines as the original drive shaft i have, plus it is alot larger and longer than the original one..so i used it on the splined end, and used the original end to weld in the other end after i cut the driveshaft down...im sure its not balanced perfect, but we measured and measured, then burnt it in and grinded the ugly welds down to assure we got proper penetration...if it gives a vibration problem i worry about it then.....next step is changing my valve covers because i fubar'd the back of them removing the old cab, and i lost oil just trying to pour it in the motor......while the valve covers are off im going to spin the oil pump and make sure the top end is getting oil......here are some pics of the driveshaft, it has a bit of negative angle, but i may have to live with it for now...

no those bolts are not tight in the pic...but they are now...

anyways, here is the latest progress....got my bro over with his welder last night and we made the first of a few crossmembers...its 1/8" 4" square tubing, welded to 3/8" plate, then bolted in between the rear spring shackles...im going to make at least 2 more like it for in the middle of the truck..all but two of the original crossmembers were dust....i left the second crossmember from the back original, and it serves as the rear mount for the newly added fuel tank...a piece of fairly thick angle iron was donated from my bro's trailor that he hauls his 500HP samurai with, dont worry, the trailor isnt pretty so the missing piece of metal looks normal.....i also finally spun the oil pump with a drill and made sure the topend is oiling, i had to change the valve covers anyways, its pushing 70 PSI easily with a drill....even at slow speeds it was at 50 psi and all rocker arms got oily, great news considering this motor sat not running for the last five years...another trip to pullapart for a dizzy hold down clamp, then to the parts store for fuel line, and ill fire this beast up...here are some more pics...

carl told me to cut the fuel door off of a 78 and mount it to the tank just for the hell of it....
