: D44 Buildup Q's.
ColdNorth 10-20-2001, 03:40 PM ...I'm going to try to pick up a 67.5" Chev D44 in mid-November. My plan is to narrow it to 62" (using Waggy long-side and Dodge short-side axles)... And the thought of trying to get those individual axles out of the only decent scrapyard here is depressing at best, so I'm going to order some Moser or Warn alloys (I'm pretty sure Warn, but I'm still reading up).
I'm pretty set now on what I want to do, so what I need to know is this (and please pardon my stupidity ):
- 30-spline inners, fine. What year Chev 44?
- Can I run 30-spline outers with flat-top knuckles and still keep the Toyota / Chev 6-bolt pattern? And what year Chev 44?
Thanks alot, guys. Truck's off the road till at least May, so it's time to start building.
(It's for an '83 LWB Toy, BTW)
Monkeyboy 10-20-2001, 03:52 PM What side drop do you need?
If it's passenger side you need I think cherokee chief 44's are about the width your looking for.
Go that route and save yourself some time.

You're talking Jeep Cherokee Chief stock 44, right?
ya, it's pass-drop, but I don't want to outboard the springs, and you can cut a 67.5" down to 62" with 29" perch width, which is perfect for me...
What's the perch width on a Chief 44? And what's the inner/outer spline count?
Monkeyboy 10-20-2001, 04:30 PM Perch width of the chief is the same as wagoneers. So there goes that whole idea for you. It is easy to do the out board though if you change your mind.
I'm guessing the spline count is the standard 31 spline or whatever.
All the same as a w ggy but the tubes are a few inches wider.
Charly 10-20-2001, 04:40 PM 30 is the standard spline count for all mid 70s and newer 44s
ColdNorth 10-21-2001, 03:50 PM Ok, I don't want to run a Waggy 44. I want to run a narrowed Chev 44.
What I want to know (and maybe I'm getting the wrong spline count, this is all new to me) is:
- Whether or not there is a high-spline-count (30, isn't it?) p-side drop D44 from a Chev, and what year I should look for.
- Whether or not that axle will also have high-spline-count outers, and if not, what year knuckle/hub/etc I need to look for to have the 6-bolt chev/toy pattern, flat-top knuckles, AND the high spline count.
Thanks.

CJ-Jeeper 10-21-2001, 05:33 PM Any Chevy 1/2 ton (pickup, blazer or suburban) from the mid '70s should have everything you want.
30 spline inner, 19 spline outer, flat tops & 6 lug
'78 & later may have 10 bolt front
Charly 10-21-2001, 05:45 PM Why do I keep hearing people ask about high spline count outers stock on a 44?
Is/was there ever such a thing?
Everytime I see someone post it, people say there never was such a thing.
I know I've never seen anything with more than 19 splines.
Where do people keep getting this idea?
Charly
BillaVista 10-21-2001, 06:19 PM Mid to late 70's Chevy is all you need.
I'd also like to know about this mythical high-spline D44 stub??
And while we're on about D44's
1) Is there such a thing as a unitized D44 bearing WITH lockouts? ( I know the answer i no, or w'd all have them, but ya gotta ask!)
2) I once heard tell of a special D44 lockring assembly, that was pre-set to release upon proper torque. As in, when re-packing the fromt hubs/bearings, instaed of fawking around with 50' lbs, back off so many degrees, then frig around getting that tiny pin in the lockring...you just spin it on and torqu away till it ratchest...ta-da wheelbearing pre-load all set
soooo...does such a beast exist?

Thanks. That should be easy to find up here...
And I guess there isn't a 30-spline outer.

Yes, such a beast does exist. They were used on the mid-90's F150 before the body style changed. The Ford part number is E7TZ-1A134-A and they should run about $15 each. The alignment tab may be wider than the slot on your spindle, but it's nothing a grinder can't fix. There is also such a beast for the Dana 60, but I have no part number for that one.

Closest you'll find is a 27-spline short stub shaft from a 71-80 Scout II w/ a D44. The D30 stubs from a CJ or Scout II also work, but they're all "small joint" stuff.
Most people believe the longer 19-spline stubs are stronger than the shorter 27-spline stuff.
jeepgod 10-22-2001, 09:24 AM why wouldnt you be able to send those shafts off to moser.. and have them shortened.. and resplined? do they neck down or something..
would cost you about 65 bucks to cut one down..

...Imagine the shipping.
...It was going to cost $70 US to ship my ARCA vid from All-Pro to Whitehorse.
Gordon 10-22-2001, 03:33 PM I don't think the 27 spline stubs are any weaker both styles neck down to the same diameter and that is where they usually break. The minor diameter of the spline is almost identical too. the only problem with the 27 spline stubs is you have to use the bolt on style hubs.
BillaVista 10-22-2001, 04:18 PM CSP,
That's great info...many many thanks
JEEPRZ 10-23-2001, 09:21 AM You could have 30 spline stubs made, and use the warn FF conversion 30 spline hubs, but thats an expensive stub just to get ruined by a 297x
