: T-case options/opinions
CLRracer 08-20-2008, 10:09 AM This winter ill be putting a doubler or something similar in the RamCharger, and Im trying to get opinions as to what to run. I currently have a 727 with a 241 in now, and I have a 727 with a 203 in the shop I can put in, so I figure my options are as follows (feel free to include what I miss):
231/241 doubler
203/241 doubler
NWF black box or klune v to 241
203/205 doubler (would like to use LoMax 3 to 1)
Stak 3spd
Atlas 4spd
Im leaning more towards the 203/205 because of the twin stick capabilities, and the internals are pure beef, but the price is comparable to a stak or atlas. I have reservations about putting the 241 behind any type of range box due to size and weight of my rig, but it is a viable and cheaper option.
This will be going in a full size RC with tons, currently on 35s with 4.10s but will be regearing next winter to 5.13s (or there abouts) and somewhere along the way getting bigger rubber (around 42s is the plan). Wheeling your typical east coast stuff.

Elwenil 08-20-2008, 10:33 AM I don't have a doubler, so I can't say anything about the combo but I do have (and have had) several NP205s and I would definitely give the nod to a 203/205 combo just for it. The internals speak for themselves, twin-sticking is easy and I really like the fact that I can creep around in 4Lo with a 205 and don't have to hear that annoying scream from the planetaries from the aluminum transfer cases.
mikeg1005 08-20-2008, 11:31 AM Guess use what you have avaiable unless you want to pay more...
Heres what I plan on doing... I currently have a NP231 behind that... I'd like to have a NP231/205 doubler.. That IMHO gives you the best option of gears..
NP231- good for normal wheeling (2.72)
NP205- good for faster moving trials/roads (1.96)
double low - 5.33 , good for low crawl.
and of course twin stick...
Stak would be cool but expesnive.. and same w/ the klune - v
203/205 doesn't give you as large of a range of gear ratios...
MIke.

Money is always a concern, but Im prepared to spend money to do it right the first time. I could easily put in a 231/241 doubler or 203/241 doubler, but Im not sure the 241 can handle it too well. I love the idea of twin stick, and if I can get a cheap to decently priced 205 I could do that then save up for the LoMax kit later, but the key there is a cheap 205. By the time you get one and go through it as well as add the 3:1 kit youve almost payed for a bolt in unit. Likewise by the time youve bought a bolt in 3:1 205 and a 203/205 doubler, youve almost bought an atlas or stak.

Then do 231/205... it will be cheap.. handle it and be lower than 203/205 and twin stick...

Trailduster79 08-20-2008, 12:33 PM Duane,
with your style of driving I would definitly go with the 203/205 and save for the low max kit.
I think that once you get the 203/205 in there you won't even want the lowmax anymore. I haven't had a situation where I needed more gear yet.
And if you wanted to later on, you could go with a 203/203/205 setup....which would the sweet and would be cheaper than the lowmax kit.

You sayin something about my driving :flipoff2:
203/203/205 sounds like too many levers, and looooong.
Oh yeah, what that place in SC that did your 1410 shafts?
Duane
Mr. Mindless 08-20-2008, 12:59 PM getting pretty long for a 106" WB with triple cases, aren't you?
If you romp on it and beat on it I'd worry a little about the 231/205 but that's the setup I plan on going with in my Dakota. I want the options. LoMax is too much money. I'll mount the 205 well so the 231 parts aren't taking a huge torque or cantilever load, and with only a tired 318 or maybe mild 4BT on down the road I don't think it'll be much to worry about.
I would not turn it around and run an aluminum case behind a reduction box if you like the throttle or have a heavy rig. Sounds like that's two counts out for you.
The 203/205 is certainly your strongest option, but if you go 241 or 231/205 (231 is easier for shifter clearance, but both have been done) you get almost all the gearing of a 203/LoMax 205 with a LOT less cost. worth the gamble? I'd do it. I'd think about a 203/241 since you have all the parts too, but I'm not a throttle jockey.

the 203/203/205 is only 6" longer than a stock 203, so length isn't really an issue. Just FYI, the 203/205 doubler is the same length as a stock 203. Oh, and I like having a bunch of levers, makes people think twice about stealing it when they can't even figure out how to put it in gear.
Carolina Driveline did my driveshaft. Was a great price and a great shaft!

You mean the whole no doors thing and bent and beat to hell sheet metal isnt enough of a deterent?
Duane
Trailduster79 08-21-2008, 07:14 AM Well, I did leave it down at the shop in NC one night unlocked and all, had people break into the two trucks beside it and steal stuff, but didn't touch mine and I had a more valuable stereo than the one they stole.......
I like to leave it in double low, that way if they steal it they won't make it out of the parking lot before i get out of the store.
shop_creature 08-21-2008, 07:36 AM Im running a 79 RC with stock 360 727 203/205 riding on rocks w/46 XL's. love the doubler cant see how i wheeled with out it. the choice of ranges is fun and twin stick is awsome. people always think i broke it when i do a front dig. any how i got my adapter john dalton of jeds machine phone # is 715-284-8575. sorry cant remember how much i paid for the work but i helpped out in the shop.

may be a dumba$$ question but does anyone make a 231 or 241/205 kit?......if so i would deff be interested.....
Mr. Mindless 10-14-2008, 01:20 PM there are at least two. Duffy at D&D Machine makes a Bok4Rocks that can do it. I don't recall the name of the other.
