: zj longarms done(sorta)
bent70 07-30-2002, 08:15 PM I basicly finished stage I of my longarm conversion. I just need to gusset the brakets and finese the brakets shapes for optimum clearence and sliding.
1.75 lowers
1.5 uppers
4x4 frame reinforsement
Cut up RE arms.pics (http://photos.yahoo.com/bc/scottsbent70/lst?.dir=/93%27+zj&.src=ph&.order=&.view=t&.done=http%3a//photos.yahoo.com/)
Monkeyboy 07-30-2002, 09:26 PM NICE
I need to reinforce my XJ.
I guess I should LOngarm it while I'm at it.
I was thinking of cutting and sleeving my RE non adjustable arms.
Monkeyboy 07-30-2002, 09:29 PM Oh ya and the locrite worked nicely for me.
I really tested it out last weekend.
It works good enough to break U-joints :D
bent70 07-30-2002, 09:33 PM I bet the longarms up front would help alot.
Ain't nothing cheaper than reusing the old crap. I kinda wish I had adjustible arms now. Make sure all your mesurements are right. Thats were I fawked up. Now I got to cut my pass. side rear arms and lenghten them 1/2"
Hey can I have that locker back:flipoff2:, I didn't think I was going to rebuild my zj. I even sold my rocker guards.
Monkeyboy 07-30-2002, 09:36 PM Doh
You can't have this one back but I'll keep an eye open for one for you.
Did you get the front geometry setup good? Are you Happy with it?
Wanna share the Dimensions with me?
bent70 07-30-2002, 10:02 PM That's cool, I don't plan on locking this axle.
The geomatry should be good. My castor is good and there are no vibes. I flexs ok too. I was told on another board that this style raduis arm isn't that great for alot of repetitive axle movement. Having a rubber bushing would help at the bast of the Y.
So far I am happy as can be, its like a new car. No clunks and smoth riding. Ofcourse only time will tell and so far (day2) I wish I did this instead of buying a Re lift years ago.
If your really interested I can throw you some #'s.
Monkeyboy 07-30-2002, 10:13 PM Yes Please PM me the numbers so I can grab a tape measure and take a look under my XJ
bent70 07-30-2002, 10:17 PM Alright, I'll get them to ya tomarrow round 12pm

I agree a flexable joint at the Base of the Y would help. Im guessing your rubber at the frame will get RIPED up faster with out this joint. Maby later you can add these joints, and make it so one uper arm is removable for High flex trail run, wristed style....
Good job.
bent70 07-31-2002, 12:27 PM I see what your saying and already am planning the redo. I just through it togather and am not very impressed with what I did from a design sence.
I want to do a four link rear and something better for the front. Next thing to do is get some new axles at the junkyard and take time to think out and design a higher quality finished product.
Alaska ZJ 08-01-2002, 02:14 PM Boy your putting a lot of binding on those front radius arms. Why not remove one side?
SeanP 08-01-2002, 03:16 PM I built a long arm mod to my XJ, here are a couple of thoughts.
You will likely get hung up on the frame mounts. They stick down pretty far. Have you thought of tucking them up inside the "frame" rails. It looks like you have angle iron on the rails so you should have a nice surface to weld to.
I would finish the welds on those mounts also. A couple of good whacks on the rocks (and you will knock those in their current location) will bust those tack welds loose.
Eeek, no caster adjustment! Hope you don't have DW, because it will be a bitch to cure without caster adjusting. I would remove the arms and use 1" all thread and a rod end that uses a rubber bushing where the uppers meet the lowers.
I am going to try to run with out my pass side upper and see how that works. My rig is still road worthy and I don't want to deal with the axle rolling when braking with only one upper. We'll see how it goes.
good Rev 1. You have some work to do but it is going in the right direction.
good luck
SeanP
bent70 08-01-2002, 11:52 PM Don't worry they are all fully welded all around. You just see the tacks in that one pic, but the sides are all welded up.
So far it drives pretty well and no death wobble.
The rear hanger doesn't hang down to low the front one does. I want to make a tubular crossmember in front the other one high in the framerails to mount either a revised radius arm, different style 3 link or a 4 link. But for now it does its purpose on the street since its not my trail rig.
