I had the unique advantage of driving an auto car last year then spotting an auto car this year while driving a standard car. If we don't build a new rig for next year the #48 will get a standard trans. I love the auto but........East coast comps have mud and we just can't get the launch we need from the auto. If I had 50 more hp maybe. For west coast I would think it would be ideal but I haven't wheeled a lot of that stuff. We drove the auto back up from a past 90deg flop so we pretty much have the fluid starvation thing worked out. Weighing all the factors we will have a standard car next year.

Launch is what I have been worried about. We need to launch up stuff up here all the time.

your just trying to lead me astray so we are not a threat next season. :shaking:

Now I will definetly keep my 5 speed.

Thought about that but worried about .........TRANS BREAK! :D I have also investigated an improved torque converter which would help.

I have a local shop that will build me any kind of torque converter I want. I'm pretty sure Hal said he ditched the custom one and went back to stock in his rig.

Back in the day, there was such a thing as a "switch pitch torque converter" I'm not sure exactly how it worked but the one I saw would change the stall speed from 2800 to 3800 with a toggle switch on the dash. It was cool!

Searching for info..........

Found this-

"The switch pitch converter has a stator with variable stator vanes whose pitch (angle) can be changed by hydraulic pressure. Conventional stator vane angles are set to about 23 degrees. The TH-400 switch pitch converter vanes can be set to 18 or 26 degrees. An electric switch is used to send a 12-volt signal to an electric solenoid in the transmission (a switch was originally connected to the throttle linkage on factory applications.) The solenoid directs oil pressure to the stator clutch assembly, causing it to "switch" the stator vane positions. Most current applications of the switch pitch unit use a manually operated switch to control the switching action."

Haven't found anyone building these yet.

Power and angles were the main reason I hated the auto in my Runner. I did waaay too many Neutral dumps. With duals and gears, I haven't wished I had the slip/control of the auto.

Glad you had the angles part solved.

What did you do to "fix" the starvation problem?
