...like, the top of the spring hanger going through the frame for added strength....

I don't think there is a whole lot to it. Just cut out the bottom of the frame and some of the suronding material, build that area wider with some beefy plate and drill a whole through and your done. The only problem I see is that you will need to have a curve in your frame directly behind the frenched in mount to avoid clearance issues

You mean like this. This one is on the '89 All Pro truck. <IMG SRC="smilies/usa.gif" border="0">

Neither of the above photos seem to show the spring actually sunk into the frame... they both look like beefy brackets welded to the frame, with the spring eye just beneath the frame. They are close, but not 'frenched' in the way that hod-rodders traditionally refer to this...

Here's a decent shot of frenched taillights: http://www.greenwithnv.com/BodyMods/Taillights1.jpg

Here are a few examples of frenched headlights: http://www.gohotrods.com/46ford/ouch.htm http://www.msra.com/98_custom_of_the_year.htm http://stovebolt.com/truck/maas.htm

The best example I've seen of this on a 4x4 was on Jason Bunch's 'Rock Star' YJ -- they buried the linkage mounts up in the frame, where the rocks couldn't get at 'em.

I think the only problem I see is up travel of the spring there wont be much room left for the front of the spring to flex without hitting the frame..

I like how the fender doesn't line up on that vw. spend all that time frnching the lights and not line up the fender.

I did this with my rear spring hangers. I only have about 3/4" hanging below the bottom of the frame. I then built little skid plates on them so that the rocks that hit the frame will just keep sliding until the tire gets up on them. It works real well, I have yet to get hung up on them like I did on the stock hangers.

The idea I had to clean up the bottom of my frame was to outboard the springs and move the hangers higher on the frame. Only problems I see so far is you would have to use springs with more arch to make up the difference lost in the raising of the mounts and that a body mount is in the way on my CJ. The one next to the rear main spring hangers.
Anyone else have any suggestions or can see any problems?

I frenched in my hangers on my Flatty. I will see if I can get a pic. It does not bottom out on the frame but you will have to change your pinion angle.

grade 8 tongue, yes. lick my frame, no. might just build up in front of the spring hanger as a slider. <IMG SRC="smilies/usa.gif" border="0">

you would also lose suspension flex because the springs would now have to travel more for the same wheel travel. A benifit however is less body roll. Personally I would try to duplicate the all-pro truck above or inboard the springs and use a good swaybar
