Wondering if it is worth swapping out my t4 tranny for a t5 tranny on my 85 cj-7 with a 2.5l 4cyl. Any ideas where I could come across one in northern ca.,Sacramento area.

Interesting question. It's an easy swap...basically a bolt-in. the T4 and T5 have the same houseing, the only difference is the internals.
Normally I would say dump the thing and go with a stronger one, but if your simply looking for for an extra gear and dont plan on beating the hell out of it, I say go for it as long as you can find one on the cheap.

No, not really. My PO did this swap because he lost 1st and 2nd, but the T5 has no reverse.. I really don't go much faster than 55 with the high gearing right now, so I -rarely- use 5th anyway. I'm putting the T4 back in on Monday, all it needed was a couple synchro keys, and I plan to run it straight into the ground before I upgrade.

I'm sure you didn't need to know all of that. BUT, what you may like to know is that both those trannys are light-duty, so unless you're keeping it on the road and just want overdrive, your money will be better spent going somewhere else. ..Especially since you're talking about buying a T5 anyway.

Swapping trash for trash seems like an exercise in futility. If you are gonna go through the work of swapping out trannies, why not do it for one with some life and strength like a T-176 or better yet a T-18?? Oh and throw a 258 in while you are at it. You will shit bricks of happiness afterwards.

Black Sheep made the right call. ..I'm not sure if the 176 came on the 2.5(and my Chilton's is still on my desk at the shop,) but it's mated to a ton of 4.2's and is a much better tranny than the 4 or 5. The T18 would also be an easy swap(probably,) but for some reason(call me judgmental) I'm thinking your jeep sees more pavement than anything else, so the 18 isn't what you're looking for. Shoot for the T176.
