: just some junk done to my rig.
REDCRO 08-22-2008, 08:46 AM Step by step springover and truss build
1- to begin we will cut these wear sleeves off of the axle, they are in the way of the new spring perches that we are putting on. You need to grind where I am pointing to cut the weld
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a365/REDCRO_REDNECK/8-14-08dump001.jpg
2- take a hammer can chisel and break the strap off
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a365/REDCRO_REDNECK/8-14-08dump002.jpg
3- Clean off the housing where the strap came off to give you a good surface to weld on.
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a365/REDCRO_REDNECK/8-14-08dump003.jpg
4- prep your new spring pads for welding. (these were ordered for a 78 cj5 and fit great)
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a365/REDCRO_REDNECK/8-14-08dump004.jpg
5- carefully line up the new spring pad over the old ones and measure each corner until they are equal.
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a365/REDCRO_REDNECK/8-14-08dump005.jpg
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a365/REDCRO_REDNECK/8-14-08dump006.jpg
6- When you are satisfied with the fit weld them in. tack the corners first then run your bead.
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a365/REDCRO_REDNECK/8-14-08dump007.jpg
7- Clean your weld and get ready for paint

REDCRO 08-22-2008, 08:46 AM Truss building—
To help strengthen the axle I am going to add a truss to keep this housing from smiling while I use the rig.
1- make a template of how you want the truss to look.
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a365/REDCRO_REDNECK/8-14-08dump010.jpg
2- When you have what you want designed cut out the steel to match
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a365/REDCRO_REDNECK/8-14-08dump011.jpg
3-take your truss and tack weld it to the housing,
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a365/REDCRO_REDNECK/8-14-08dump013.jpg
3- Since I am building a beam style truss I have another piece to add. After all your tacks are in and everything is where you want it finish welding everthing in.

cmelo 08-22-2008, 08:01 PM Did you do anything else to assure that your perches were lined up correctly. I'm am doing an SOA on my front axle soon and planned on tacking the perches in place while it's bolted up to my truck. But seeing how your's came out so good without doing that I may do it without bothering like you which would save me a TON of work.
Is that a bogger track wedding band???????
thats what it looks like to me! Thats awesome:smokin:
Lil' lucifer 08-23-2008, 07:35 AM Is that a bogger track wedding band???????
:laughing::laughing:
txzuk1988 08-23-2008, 09:32 PM sweet band!:smokin:
REDCRO 08-24-2008, 08:23 AM I placed the spring perches like that because of a few write ups I read for sami's that did it like that. Also the long axle tube is smaller around than the short tube. To cure this I will add a 0.25 spacer to that side, or I will make my own zero-rates ( one side 0.75 the other .50) and have them cut to the correct any mistakes in what angle the perches are on. I will have to see and report back.
That is a Bogger tread on my finger. After about 6 months of wearing my ring I could stand it no longer and just quit. This did not sit well with my wife and after about 3 years of that argument I said why don't I just get it tatooed on since I will not wear jewelry. She agreed and I got to pick out my own pattern. Also I got it done on her birthday as her present:grinpimp:.
As soon as I get my camera out I will show you guys why I am putting a different axle in my rig and a good example of how not to spoa a rig.
purevil71 08-24-2008, 09:38 AM sweet band!:smokin:
X2...that's fawkin awesome!! Might have to remember that if I ever get married again...lol
REDCRO 08-25-2008, 05:51 AM I got the axle pulled out of the rig and am working on the splashpan/skid plate for under the engine. It is very easy to do with the axle out of the way. Pics will come soon.
prestonlaw 08-26-2008, 08:23 AM Welds look nice, what is the model of your Welder? I'm looking for a welder for my sami project that will do up to 1/4" and plug into a standard outlet. So far I think my plan is a Hobart 140amp
REDCRO 08-26-2008, 08:40 AM thanks for the props. I am using a Millermatic 210 and love the machine. I bought the 210 because my dad has the 250 amp model and it never gets turned up to max capacity. So bought the next size down and as far as I can see the only difference is the time limit on the duty cycle and price.
If I was in the position to buy another one I would bet a 110 type unit to do sheet metal only. Buy a 220v machine you will thank yourself.
REDCRO 09-11-2008, 06:47 AM update time
I got busy and started the splash sheild that I was wanting to put on my rig........
SPLASH SHEILDING

1- make a cardboard template of the what you want to cover and make it extend frame rail to frame rail.

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a365/REDCRO_REDNECK/9-11-08dump007.jpg

3-test fit everything 3 or 4 times.
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a365/REDCRO_REDNECK/9-11-08dump005.jpg
4- when you are happy with its fitment drill and tap for some fasterners.
5- Paint the steel
6- reinstall
catzuk 09-11-2008, 07:29 AM Good documentation! Keep up with the pics and write-up! Looking good.
And I too will be doing the tattoo band the next time I get married, already decided that one. I like the bogger track! But like you working for a living with my hands in a lot of different equipment, I couldn't ever wear mine either and when I did, it felt strange. Was titanium and opened beer bottles nicely though! :D
REDCRO 09-11-2008, 02:01 PM thats funny right there.............. my band was a titanium also. Could not stand it or even my HS class ring. both were wastes of money.

I have the new trussed and guarded front axle in the truck now, and just need to install the brakes and breather tube.
then comes the greatest part of all the new ford tractor blue paint job. Any vendor dare to send me some logos for the hood and tailgate?

red_zook 09-19-2008, 06:14 PM Nice work mate!!!
is that highsteer arm a merc arm?
REDCRO 09-29-2008, 06:08 PM I used a sky manufacturing stage one steering kit. I liked the quality and price. I did have to grind a portion of the arm to let it seat correctly as one can tell.
