It wasn't too bad. It's a seven passenger disco, so it was not that different from having a full pass load. It was 25 4x8 sheets of OSB and a few 2x6s.

As for the airlines, do you lack the fab. skills to run simple hoses anywhere else?

No, I just see it as pointless as I already have mine setup exactly how I wanted it...

Everything mounted safely on the roof within easy reach and far from natural expedition elements (mud, snow, rocks, deep water, etc.)

Or maybe mounting the pump somewhere other than in a mailbox? Is that why you're butthurt?:(

The mailbox serves a purpose no matter how Billy Bob you think it looks...

That $7 piece of aluminum is why ViAir has agreed to let me keep my warranty, even though I'm filling twice the rated capacity on a continuous basis....

I never said it couldn't be done, I just want to see how YOU would go about routing 1 inch air brake tubing (cause that's what these horns require) from a 10 gallon source on the roof to wherever you have your horns hidden...

Take it as constructive criticism or whatever, be a Billy Bob and let everyone laugh behind your back, I don't give a shit. It doesn't have to take such large airlines with enough pressure going to them... I've made them work with 5/16 line off of a CO2 tank (and yes I'm aware that's a lot of pressure). The comment about the quote button? No, NOT aimed at you, but maybe the "stupid" part at the end hit too close to home? It doesn't have to take such large airlines with enough pressure going to them... I've made them work with 5/16 line off of a CO2 tank (and yes I'm aware that's a lot of pressure).

When running high pressure (whether CO2 or Nitrogen), you still have to regulate it down to a safe psi or risk blowing out the diaphragms..

5/16" may be fine for the Chinese knock-offs floating around on EBay, but not these...

Even on the small setup on my Golf Cart, I stepped up to 3/8" because there's a noticable difference in tone when using smaller line... (granted, I only use 150psi on that setup as well)

Anyhoo, I've been asked not to feed you any further, so I'll just ignore your previous comments and we'll leave it at that...

That doesn't seem like a good use of the space to me

How would you suggest I configure the OBA tanks?

Keep in mind that are old pix and I have a large 2x4 storage box on the driver's side for tools, jacks, recovery gear, tents, chairs, BBQ grille, etc., etc.

Also, a fire extinguisher and a pair of homemade winch anchors take up the small space in front of the compressor....

It's just my opinion and I have never seen the vehicle, under the hood or undercarrige but first off I would ditch that big horn.

Can you even fire that thing off with the sun roof open while driving. What is it 180 db? Are you driving in the fog lots or stuck on two metal tracks? I get it though you want to be able to honk at bad drivers and scare the bejezus out of them.

Then there has to be some space under the hood for the mail box and then run the air tanks on the roof rack along the back because there probably isn't any room along side the frame rails under your rig. The spare tire well is taking up lots of space and gas tank is in between the frame rails, so that's out of the question too.

Anyway, it's a nice clean rig so I figure you've already thought about this...good looking rack though.

Was giving you the benefit of the doubt "snake" eater, but when you asked if there was a ladder on the other side as well, I now know we are dealing with a D-Bag here. Risky enough with one of the side, but two?:flipoff2:

Racks are for gear and using up half of it with something permanent is absurd.
You could have easily made the legs a litttle longer and mounted all of the horn gear to the bottom of the rack, leaving the whole rack usable.
Oh, but hiding it defeats the purpose of the Big horn compensating for the little "snake"?
While I'm on a roll, leaving the area over the sunroof open is pretty gay too IMNSHO.

Does anyone that mounts a spare tire on their rack use a crane of some sort to load/unload it? If so can we get some pictures?

I'm going to be building a rack for my K20 Suburban soon and part of the reason for it is to have a spot for a spare tire, but I'm dreading having to put a 35" tall tire w/rim up there and take it down manualy.

Then there has to be some space under the hood for the mail box and then run the air tanks on the roof rack along the back because there probably isn't any room along side the frame rails under your rig.

There's just barely enough room under the hood for the compressor alone, but then I wouldn't be able to keep it cool enough to run fill both tanks on a constant basis...

The spare tire well is taking up lots of space and gas tank is in between the frame rails, so that's out of the question too.

I actually have other plans for the spare area...

Once I finish building dual swingouts for the spare and jerry cans, i'll be mounting a rear winch in the spare location...

Besides, I wouldn't want any of the gear up top subjected to mud and rocks....

Was giving you the benefit of the doubt "snake" eater, but when you asked if there was a ladder on the other side as well, I now know we are dealing with a D-Bag here.

I'm a D-Bag cause I asked the man a simple question

Racks are for gear and using up half of it with something permanent is absurd.

I actually use the OBA system more than any of my gear (airtools, airing up both my tires as well as others on the trails), so I don't mind it being permanent...

You could have easily made the legs a litttle longer and mounted all of the horn gear to the bottom of the rack, leaving the whole rack usable.

Umm, the tanks are 12" tall and the horns even taller....

You want me to lift the entire rack that much higher just so I can fit that stuff underneath?

My buddy had a built K5 with 37's and the spare mounted on the rack...

Getting it up there took 3 of us and some rope, but getting it down (or bouncing it down) was easy

That was out on the trails though...

One time he popped the bead off the rim while parallel parking in downtown Manhattan (he was aired down pretty low from the night before) and we had to roll the spare down the windshield slowly to avoid hitting other parked cars...

I'm dreading having to put a 35" tall tire w/rim up there and take it down manualy.

I had a custom roof rack made for my old ZJ. The spare tire was mounted on it with a center spin-down to hold it in place. I had to remove the tire once by myself (I'm 5'3") and immediately decided that the tire didn't belong up there. Maybe a boom or hoist would have come in handy, but I would still have had to get to the spare -- which I couldn't do without a 6-ft ladder.

After that experience I had a cage built inside the ZJ that could hold 2 spares. I used pizza cutter 33x9.50s for spares to reduce the amount of space the tires took up. This worked a lot better.

One time he popped the bead off the rim while parallel parking in downtown Manhattan (he was aired down pretty low from the night before) and we had to roll the spare down the windshield slowly to avoid hitting other parked cars...

It had 15x10 Eagles and were aired down from the night before when we went to Sheepshead Bay (sandy wetland)...

He rolled the edge of the curb while parking and the bead just popped off the rim, leaving a nice gash on his new wheels :(

A couple weeks later, he picked up a set of beadlocks :smokin:

That's a nice looking rig, what are the specs of the lift/tire/wheels? I'm running a 4" lift right now cause it was free, but your friends burb looks killer. Did yall sandwich the roof when you mounted the rack? Looks like you have 5 mounts per side and the rack covers most of the roof top area, so I can imagine that it stiffened up the body quite a bit.

15 inch lift and 49" mickeys

we put that blue stiff home insulation from lowes in between the headliner and roof shell. it helped a metric shit ton on the noise inside the truck. we used plates and sammiched the roof and the rack together, and with silcone to seal the holes up.

worked great too.

yea clay sold it. some dood bought it who owned a body shop and put new fenders on it and painted it. its pretty hard to miss it. it has the beginning of a ranch hand style pipe bumper on the front end.

was a cool 'burb when we had it ;)

got pretty good MPG too for being huge (like 13 or so), plus front and rear a/c worked :smokin:

Yeah it rides real good. Sasquatche and I went with Alan (bustedknuckles) when he bought it. We drove from Dickinson to Dayton on 146 and met Fatexassk5 in Baytown to eat. It got lots of looks. :grinpimp: I asked him what he's gonna do when he has a flat. He said he's gonna call AAA and let them deal with it.

oh if i owned that truck (which i almost did)

i would redo the rear spring hangers and perches. they were welded on goofy from the guy we bought it from.

i would put a track bar on the front axle

recharge the a/c, it was a little low and blew a little warm.

thats about it! it was pretty solid minus that shit.

I'm pretty sure Alan put some new hangers on and the a/c is still a little warm. The tire iron deal sucks royally! And to get in, Alan built a step out of 1x2 and a small rachet strap. Seems to work fine.

Hey that is my burban. Good job on the roof rack, it is the best part of it.

It is for sale now. I just can't find a reason to keep it. I do like it, but have big plans for another project.

I put some sky off road manufacturing shackle flip hangers. Helped the ride immensely.

Bigfeet

Thats how mine is, I was worried about the fiberglass holding the weight but several people on expedition portal have the stock racks that came with their fiberglass shells and some posted mounting pics and they are simply bolted through the shell with a small piece of metal on the backside like a fender washer and they take them off road with things like large spare tires or roof top tents. I bolted mine through the plywood in the roof and stand on top of it fine.
I need to take come good pics, haven;t had a chance since we moved, my truck is a Silverado with the z71 off road package and the rack came from a tahoe with the z71 off road package which has a different rack than the normal tahoe's.

Super mud
04-18-2011, 06:50 PM
Heres the rack that the previous owner made which was a nice design just poor on the quality side. Also it was mounted by the factory mounts which I quickly broke on a 200mile trip. So off it came and while I was at it decided to take the sawsaw to it and lengthen it to full length.

http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh300/joshdonofrio/Mobile%20Uploads/0703102042-1.jpg

http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh300/joshdonofrio/Mobile%20Uploads/downsize-25.jpg

To make up for the extra which will be missing the grate, I welded in angle iron for a box that will drop in and hold chains, straps and dirty stuff that is currently in the box on the inside. i also have plans for a light bar that will fold down with a "spoiler" that will fold out in the process to give me the downforce needed to keep the mud terrains planted through the corners. Don't have it finished yet cause I no longer have possesion of the mig i was borrowing and I'm not taking the oxy acetylene to it which I usually use for my small projects. Also the box area isn't the full width of the rack so I'll have room for long objects on the side and I might also make one of the corner pieces into a door to fit stuff longer than the rack.
