Chambered in .223 to keep things simple. Prices are all over the place on these things. Local shop has AK74s for $525 NIB with extra mag and gunbroker ranges from $300 to $700.
I have about $500 to spend. What brand/model should I be looking for?
Pete, you have anything available?

Most of the saiga's I've seen have a rifle style stock/grip. I'm looking for the pistol grip, classic styling. Is it available/adaptable?

Keep an eye out for a MAK90 also....this is one I "de-banned". Bulgarian mags will work with a slight tweak.

By all means, please elaborate. A buddy of mine has a norinco .223 and doesn't want to shell out $50 per mag.

If you put a Chinese mag and a Bulgarian mag side by side, you'll notice the rounds sit higher in the Chinese mag. Take the follower out of the Bulgy mag, heat the front 1/3 of the follower with a lighter just to when it's pliable. Put roughly a 25-30 degree bend in it. Reinstall and check it against the Chinese mag...
The more time consuming and expensive alternative is to put in a bullet guide in front of the chamber, but I had great success with just modding the mags. The Bulgarian mags are a touch wider than the Chinese also, so you may or may not need to shave a bit of material off the outside of the feed-lips.
Mine fed 100% with FMJ, never tried soft points...
