: Gas consumption
cjmatt100 08-23-2008, 07:34 AM I am running the Rubicon at the end of September and am concerned about the amount of gas I will need. I have a CJ-7 with a stock LT1-350 out of a 97Firebird, Ford 9" axles with 4.56 gears, 38.5 Super Swampers and a 15 gallon fuel cell. I am thinking about taking two of these

to give me an additional 8 gallons of gas. I know that there are a lot of you that have run the Rubicon that would have a better idea of how much gas I may need. Do you think this will get me through? I appreciate any input that will be helpful.
007Crawler 08-23-2008, 07:49 AM First of all it depends on how many days you plan to spend on the trail. We've run the Con many times from Wentworth Springs up Cadillac then out to Lake Tahoe. Normally we take three days to do so. With TJ's we've never had a problem getting low on fuel. Our wheelers with CJ's normally put five gallons in their tanks at Rubicon Springs and make it out with no problem.
This is the best advise I have for you. :smokin:
Daddy4zack 08-23-2008, 09:26 AM when I went through.. 302/4.56's.. used up 10-12 gallons.. I think you should be fine..

Bonecruncher 08-23-2008, 10:08 AM I've run it a few times in my 73' Commando with a 401. 35's, 4.56 gears, and TBI.
I would fill up in Pollock Pines, drive to the trail, (through Loon) run it over 2 days, drive into Tahoe and fill up again. 17-18 gallons each time, and that 401 is a pig.
cjmatt100 08-23-2008, 10:29 AM I was thinking it would be enough but I know we are planning on three days and I would hate to run out. Thanks you your input it helps put me at ease.
andycj7 08-23-2008, 10:36 PM i usually fill up my 10-12 gallon gas tank at georgetown and have never had a problem running the whole trail in couple days. I dont bring gas cans. (georgetown to loon to rubicon springs-tahoe-highway 80) Usually have couple of gallons extra of gas by the time i hit the gas station near start on 80. Its a CJ-7- MPI 4.2 L 258 on 35's if that makes a difference, same ford 9 inch axle.
IV WHLN 08-23-2008, 11:36 PM From loon to the springs and back on 39's with a 4.0ltr was exactly 10 gallons.
oldtimingman 08-24-2008, 07:32 AM From Airport Flats through Wentworth to the Springs and back about 10-12 gallons.
350 , 5:38s, 35s
Freakin A Scrib 08-27-2008, 08:59 AM from georgetown to the end of the rubicon at tahoe in a 4.0 was under 10 gallons
CaseyP 08-27-2008, 10:59 AM from loon to top of caddy i use just over a quarter of a tank. TJ with a 4.0 5.13s and 35s
jopes 09-07-2008, 02:43 AM depends on how slow / fast you go and how high you rev your engine the whole way.
I filled up in placerville, drove the rig all the way there, did the trail came out on the other side and got fuel at a station some place. Cannot remember now. but I was running with probably less than 5 gallons left. My rig at the time had a 45 gallon tank.
bronco, carbed 400, manual, doubler, 5.13's and 39.5's when I did it.
Keith 09-07-2008, 01:03 PM Always take extra fuel with you. Even if you dont burn all the fuel in your tank, it is always a good idea to have fuel with you in case you need it because of an emergency, or someone else needs it.
arrogantone 09-07-2008, 01:58 PM I've run it a few times in my 73' Commando with a 401. 35's, 4.56 gears, and TBI.

The 401 is still alive (in someone elses Jeep now) so it's still a pig. It's the rest of the Commando thats gone.
Are you running the Rubicon with us this year?
arrogantone 09-08-2008, 08:11 PM Not to hi-jack this thread, but yes.
Pooze 09-08-2008, 09:14 PM My 383 is a pig also I have 2 20 gal cells I drive from tahoe to Ice house all the way through and back home on about 30 gal.
thetrailboss 09-20-2008, 09:01 PM I just ran this past wkend from loon to buck continued down to the springs for the Marlin BBQ and wheeled back out at night camped back at buck and wheeled back to loon the next morning and just made it to the slabs and I burned 15 gals with a 304 V-8 and added 5 gals to get back to the spillway, but I did an extreme amount of idling, helping others......... Im thinkn of converting to propane
cjmatt100 09-21-2008, 04:01 PM I think I will be shutting it off if I am not moving. I feel good about making it with the gas I am taking though.
Bonecruncher 09-21-2008, 07:49 PM Just got home from running the Rubicon today. 1st time with my new Jeepster. 350 chevy TBI, th-400, Dana 20 with 3.15, 4.56's and 35" tires.
