Ok guy's need a little help here it is . I have a 94 Ram 1500 2x short box standard cab looking to swap a 12v into it . Need to know if a 1990 Chevy 454ss 14 bolt rear will fit into my Dodge not sure how close the lenght's are . I will be relocating perches onto this & also doing a spring under to lower this vehicle to make it a street truck (drag) or more likely a v-8 eater ,import crusher (rice cooker) . Thanks for any info on the axle length similarity

Not taking anything away from a 14 bolt, but for simplicity's sake, why not just use a Dana axle from a 2500/3500 dodge?

First things first: Not to be rude, but please move this post. It's got nothing to do with 4x4 and it's technically a Chevy question, not Dodge.

Some 454 SS rear axle notes:
http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?p=8347848

I would assume you are looking for a rear that can handle a lot of torque but is lightweight, semi-float, and can be had in 5 bolt pattern.

My 91 Dodge CTD 4x4 Std cab carries ~65% of the vehicle weight on the front axle when it's not loaded. There's also no way I'm going to exceed about 80mph with 2800 rpm governed revs unless I drive off a cliff (overdrive 5 speed, 3:54's, ~33" tires). I mention this because it illustrates some major challenges you will face....

I'm not a Chevy expert, but as far as I can tell most of the 454SS trucks came with 4:10 rears. With 4:10's you're going to run out of revs real quickly if you are drag racing with an engine that redlines under 3K. If you've got gobs of low end end torque and you want to go fast, I would pick a faster ratio. You aren't building a pulling truck. Some of the drag diesel teams are running 5K+ governor springs, but keep it's NOT cheap to fix a Cummins engine if something fails at that rpm.

The major problem with doing a 12v conversion on a half-ton 2wd is going to be getting the engine/trans weight back far enough to where you won't be destroying front end parts on a weekly basis and the vehicle weight is biased where you can actually put some power to the ground. Lowering your truck is going to make good weight transfer at launch even more difficult to accomplish. You make money with short E.T.'s, not long burnouts. On a 4wd drag truck the front wheels are pulling, and the truck will have a higher CG than a comparable 2wd. A 4x4 drag truck is going to have less problems handling poor weight bias.

If you still want to go the lightweight 2wd route, there's some heavy duty 5 lug rears under conversion vans that can be had for cheap. That's where I would start hunting. I don't know anyone parting out a 454SS, so unless it's totalled I don't think you'll find one for cheap. I'd personally go with a FF rear for safety reasons. Your front wheels wont match, but who cares?

The 454SS 14 bolt will have the same 5 lug pattern as the 10 bolt also, so no match for u there either.

i think in the the end you would be better off findinf a 9" rear.

there arent a whole lot of the 5 lug 14bsf out there and even less that make it to the scrap piles.

the idea is fine, they are a full width axle 67" +/- and will handle the hp.

if its up to me i would just get an 8 lug and run it as is. they make nice 8 lug rims now.

I don't think I would trust a 9" to live behind a CTD for long, nor would I expect the stock 1/2 suspension to like holding up the weight of the 6BT.

This is a stupid question and completely in the wrong forum. You Monkeys need to start reading the stickys that say "READ BEFORE POSTING" and pay more attention. I mean really, WTF possessed you to post some 2WD crap in the Dodge forum on a offroad site? Somebody move this retarded bullshit to the tow rig forum please.

Try here, you'll get guys that are into the 2wd drag trucks. And don't think about a 9" the money you spend making it handle the torque would be a little much probably.

ther eis a bigger brother to th e9" also, 9.5 or 9.75, kind of off the wall but would probably be better suited.

i forgot about the cummins, i was thinking gas

Just go 8-lug all around -- you will end up there anyway trying to keep the front end together under the weight of the 12V.

You can try to get by with light 1/2 ton stuff - but I think you are gonna be building it all twice if you go that route.

Hello for those of you that think the chevy / Dodge are different I went ahead and bought this 454ss rear end it even had disc brakes (bonus) and the 5 bolt matched also has a detroit locker in it all had for 2benjamin's not a bad deal yes the gears Are 4.10 but thats an easy swap and I do plan to upgrade the front a bit were working on putting in some coil's in front with a high spring rate to help with the load and even trying to source some 2500 2wd A arms to fit bigger ball joints in front and I know what it takes to make the motor go I currently own 2 2500's one makes 900hp on #2 the other 650'sh on #2 these are an 06 & 07 so I know about making power and yes it will see its life on the Tarmac 1/4 mile at a time (fast & furious) well thanks for all the info

Glad it all worked out for u but GM never produced anything with 5 on 5.5 bolt pattern. Should be a cool project no less.

Holy run on sentence. Attempting to read that is painful. Punctuation is your friend. Learn how to use it. :shaking:

i am not sure which is worse....his 4 mile run on sentance, or the overall general topic of this thread.

you've got a 900hp truck, and you want to know how to beef up chevy 1/2 ton suspension to handle weight? i hope the the 454ss axle crumbles under the power of the cummins, and 5 lugs shear the fuck off
