Anyone have opinions on the stacked style coolers, like the B&M unit pictured below. The stacked coolers are supposed to be more efficient, and reduce pressure loss. I am not having any luck running one. I am going to change the orientation to avoid possible air trapped in the cooler. If that does not work then I am going to switch to a standard cooler.

those coolers are designed to work in conjunction with a normal heat exchange type cooler in your radiator, they dont work well on their own.

I was talking with Turbo Action
http://www.turboaction.com/frame.html
and they recomended to me that I use a tube-type cooler because when your transmission takes a dump you can never clear all the debri out of the plate and fin & coolers and they need to be replaced when the tranny dumps.
They told me to take an old air conditioner condenser and run it since I told them I would be running in ambient air temps up to nearly 120 degrees.

I just install a tube type on my dads Vandura it was a HD/towing 20,000 GVW by flexalite (sp?) and it seems to keep the temps down ( I also installd a B&M trans temp gadge)

To avoid that, just put a filter in line from the tranny to the cooler. It will save the cooler, and you can periodically check the filter to see what's up with the tranny.

I've used several kinds of coolers and definitly prefer the stacked plate cooler. I first ran two of the biggest perma-cool tube and fin coolers, but would still get very hot on the trail (235F+). I then switched to a B&M cooler (biggest one they make) and that helped (was also nice that it took half the space). Problem was I still was getting hot on the trail (220+), so I switched to a Setrab cooler. So far so good, I have yet to see over 195F. For routing it, I use a thermostat so the fluid goes to thte radiator when below 180F (too cool of fluid will varnish up the tranny), when the fluid hits 180F, it diverts the fluid to my Setrab (by passing the radiator).
