: Mossberg 500 w/Tactical Stock
Todd W 08-24-2008, 11:12 PM Anyone have a Mossberg 500 w/tactical stock? Opinions? Likes, dislikes?
The wife needs something with a much smaller stock, a youth would probably work but the adjustability of the tactical seems nice so I can shoot too and she can fine tune. My only concern was that it isn't "snug" when locked into place. We've only looked at it in the store and not shot so I`m not tooo sure on overall construction and reliability.
She also likes that it's uber`light weight compared to my Benelli and also ~1lb ligther than an 870 we checked out too.
The one we looked at was I believe the Knoxx SpecOps stock w/out recoil suppression. Does this sound right/standard for the mossberg 500 "Tactical".
If so, what does everyone think of the recoil supression adjustable knoxx stock? Possibly worth getting a normal mossberg 500 and adding that stock ?
TheRedHorseman 08-25-2008, 06:50 AM WTF is a "tactical" stock? An AR15 carbine stock?

I think so.
Having tried an M4 stock on my AR10, I don't want that variety of stock on anything with more recoil than an AK47. That was painful. :(
Although, with a decent butt pad *and* a padded cheek rest, it'd probably "become" workable.

tomb raider 940 08-25-2008, 07:40 AM I have the knox non recoil. less recoil than stock. I have both barrel setups where I can go from home defense to go and shoot some clays. Anyways had this one for around 10 years now. Will find a pic later for you.
I also have a Benelli supernova. Way less recoil than my Mossberg. I have seen a guy at the range use the knox moving recoil one, but have never tried it. I dont know if I want moving parts like that. :flipoff2:
909K5 08-25-2008, 07:50 AM AR15 carbine colapsable stocks only belong one ar style rifles.:shaking:
SilverZuk 08-25-2008, 07:50 AM I don't like pistol grip stocks on a shotgun.
It throws recoil into the wrist instead of the shoulder where it belongs.
Not a problem on a 223, not comfortable with a 12 ga high brass.
I shot one with the wire type folder stock, and didn't like that one either.
It was not comfortable to shoot.
I prefer a factory stock on a mossberg, unless I could find one with a little more drop.
My advice is buy comfortable, not taticool.
tomb raider 940 08-25-2008, 07:54 AM the good thing about adjustable stocks they can fit a variety of people. I have tried a few different pistol grip stocks and knox is my choice. No recoil goes into the wrist unless you hold it wrong. Has a good recoil pad on it as well.
Todd W 08-25-2008, 08:19 AM Holy shit, did none of you read my post? This is not for me. The whole point of the "TACTICAL" stock is so that it's adjustable. Quoted from original post: "The wife needs something with a much smaller stock" (shorter)
The only reason I even ask about this is because she tested it out yesterday and really liked it but I wasn't sure of the quality of the stock or the mossberg.
Also, none of you seemed to have answered the question about the quality of the Mossberg 500 :flipoff2:
tomb raider 940 and Silverzuk - Thanks for your feedback.BUT, SiilverZuk, I could careless about tacticool, it's for adjustability she's a hair under 5' and under 100' so even a youth we tried was a bit to long for her reach.
We would get an 870 Youth but from what I googled the Mossberg 500 got good reviews and weighs less and even cost a little less so a win-win-win, I want some PBB feedback on the 500 and knoxx stock... tacticool or not. If it was pink or orange and fit her right I'd get it.
TheRedHorseman 08-25-2008, 08:22 AM The length of pull on my Auto-5 was too long, I merely bitchslapped it with my band saw. A whole lot cheaper than some fagtical AR stock.
aloharover 08-25-2008, 08:32 AM many people don't like the AR stock on other weapons.
I really don't care one way or the other....ok I think the VLTOR M14 system looked strange :D
But the idea of an adjustable stock has merit. And if the stock is still using a hollow AR type tube you can get a mule kicker or other mercury or mechanical shotgun recoil reducer and epoxy it in there. Since its a pump its not going to effect the cycling of the shotgun.
The Mossberg is a good solid 12g.
The biggest issue with the Mossberg and a pistol grip is the location of the safety. There are extended safeties which do help with this.
But the Mossy really is better with a more traditional stock. Get a wood stock and cut it downala TRH. Follow the original lines and remove say 1/2" at a time until shee likes it.
Then remove an additional 1" and glue on a recoild pad. Hell insert a mule kicker. Sand and paint the thing black then glue on the pad.
The amount of money you save on the plain wood stock over the Knoxx will more then cover a pad and mule kicker.
edit: oh yeah, if the Mossy has a plastic safety switch replace it with a metal one. The plastic ones break at the worse times BTDT.
Unka-Boo 08-25-2008, 08:33 AM You can look for a "youth" stock also, designed for kids. It'll have a shorter length of pull. Pistol grip stock on a mossy never made sense to me considering where the safety is.
Todd W 08-25-2008, 08:36 AM Good info thanks.
Were going someplace else today to checkout the other youths.

We spent a day shooting some 308 enfields, 308 Saigas, PTR91, m14, fals, and DPMS AR.
The issued M4 stock really did put a beatting on the shoulder. Not as bad as the Enfield, but it was by far the worse of all the Autoloaders. I would say the FALs were the nicest.
Anyway there are some after market rubber pads that slip[ over the milspec style collapser that work well. As do the VLTOR Emod and the CAA stock. Both of this have a relatively thin rubber pad. What I found to be the issue was not so much the hardness of the stock stock, but rather the teeth they mold into the plastic. Wearing a tshirt they really tear you up.
bullywagon 08-25-2008, 09:10 AM Get the Knoxx Spec-Ops recoil absorbing stock... it is adjustable, and best of all you can shoot 3inch mag rounds all day and not kill your sholder... My wife and mother in law love it on my Mossberg 500.

I got it, that was my point about the comfort thing. For me, it was that the butt didn't stay put very well in my shoulder, but tended to walk up, which drove the side of the stock into my cheekbone. This has never been a problem for me before with the same layout of stock on an AR15 or AK47 (the haters can hate all they want, but I'm 5'11", my wife is 5'3", the collapsibles mean we can both shoot the same guns, and when my daughter gets taller than two-foot-nothin', she can too) because the recoil isn't as bad. On a shotgun, I'd expect the recoil to be worse than what my AR10 does, and maybe I'm just a pussy, but about 60 rounds through the AR10, and I was ready to call it a day before I had more bruising of my face.

I had a sweatshirt on, but it wasn't enough. :( Or it was too much, as there wasn't enough "bite" to keep the stock from climbing up my shoulder on recoil. A rubber pad probably would've made a lot of improvement, but that's why I had you send me that Ace skeleton stock instead... I don't expect my wife to shoot the AR10 much, so I'm not going to bother making it pleasant for her; if she wants one, she can come out to the shop, make her own lower, and build it out how she sees fit.
Jason R 08-25-2008, 12:44 PM Youth stock or have the factory one cut down. I had my benelli stock shaved and added a different recoil pad. I kept the factory sling mount (which aftermarket Benelli stocks doesn't have).
Get the adjustable stock for your M4 and let her go crazy. Did you get married already!?

I did the same thing with a mossberg 500.
I taped it off, marked it and cut it with a hand saw.
The only problem was fitting the recoil pad.
I'm not a craftsman, so I whittled on it and screwed it back on.
It looked like ass, but the shotgun fit me.
I'm 5'8", but apparently have stubs for arms.
Most all shotguns and rifles are too long for me.
Especially if they have a recoil pad. The easy fix for most was to take the recoil pad off, and make a butt plate.
The mossberg was beating me up shooting slugs, so I lopped off about 1.5" and put the pad back on.

just did a 870 for misfitcj's girl and I chopped 4" off the ass and put a nice recoil poofy buttpad on it. fits her perfect.
