: Which one to get?
Lance 08-25-2008, 10:48 AM first! :flipoff2:
I was drooling at the rc crawlers at the Donner comp last month. But my wife frowned on dropping the coin on one. So which one should I get? I don't have time to "compete" with one, just want it for fawking around with. But I would definitley want something that isn't going to break every damn time I use it!
they look kick ass for sure. just what I need !!! a new addiction :D
I want a good base model that will be fun to play with but also worthy of adding all the badass parts too.
BIGJOEDUCKSLAYER 08-25-2008, 12:05 PM What you want is a ax-10 all most ready to run, you will still need to buy battery, charger, radio, and speed controler motor combo(novak sell 55turn combo for like $105) This kit you will have to put together, it takes about 2hours having never done it before. From there the sky is the limit. When I bought mine 2months ago I spent $550.00 I have only broken shocks in the rear. If you want to check it out pm your #
CronusTRD 08-25-2008, 12:11 PM Budget around ~$650 after electronics, chargers, battery packs, radio, etc.

get an ax-10 they are the best for the money you are going to spend. ive had mine for 10 months and all i have broke so far is a cheap servo and i just broke the piece of the steering which probly cost $.50... also you could hook them up with rear steer :D
SnoopMaxx 08-25-2008, 02:32 PM A good crawler is the Axial AX-10 ARTR

STEW<CO> 08-25-2008, 05:34 PM :flipoff2:You can't go wrong with the AX-10, can be competitive right out of the box and very strong, plus you can put a faster motor in it for speed and it will hold up to the abuse. For something a little less competitive but fun to do wheelies and just bash on the Wheely King. For all out competition costing a little more the Enroute Berg dual motor rig.
doomdogg666 08-25-2008, 06:50 PM grow some juevos, build a super!!!

I bet you are too competitive to NOT compete if you get one! You'll find the time! :D
I'd recommend the Axial AX-10 complete package from The Crawler Store (http://www.tcscrawlers.com/Axial-AX10-Scorpion-Complete-Package-Deal-1-Everything-you-need-to-get-up-and-running-p-16539.html)! Pretty good deal for the money.

doomdogg666 08-25-2008, 07:46 PM why get what everyone else gets? once you see what a super can do, 2.2's are kinda wimpy. do a hustler super roller from tcs and just add electronics. if they still made them, i would do a tcs cfnn chassis, ohh wait, i did!
youngblood 08-25-2008, 08:11 PM I agree, put some time and effort into it and build a Super.
2.2 axial/bergs are so 20 minutes ago... Why run 5" tall tires when you could be sportin 8"s

obviously I have a whole new lingo to learn... but damn I can tell this is going to be fun and expensive. I shall forever hold rusty responsible for my new found addiction
carnage crew 08-25-2008, 08:56 PM Berg Newage axles and a Team carnage crew B.J. chassis. That is what I am building next.

braxton357 08-25-2008, 11:51 PM Fun-for-the-money factor? My vote definitely goes to the wheelie king. If you shop around or watch ebay, you can get a smoking price and their fun as hell. They're affordable enough that a few friends can buy them, lock them, and have a spec class like jeepspeed of your own. Plus easily upgraded.
That being said, a few friends and I got really into it, eventually got tired of it, duct taped chainsaws to the top of two and had a battle royale, haven't had them back out since. As a matter of fact, before the rusty win I forgot I had one.
:edit: And way to capitalize on your newfound RC crawler fanbase Lance...:shaking::flipoff2:

My Nylints are indestructible...gay, yes, but plug and play.
I want another one, but not the maintenance.
42s on u 08-26-2008, 03:23 PM I've got an ax-10. Love it, no problems yet, well exept for the drive lines.
Looking for a tube chassis, any suggestions?
CaptVag 08-26-2008, 08:11 PM Holy shit Duratrax is still in business??? I bought their first Nitro MT truck when I was a kid. Jesus I gotta get back into the game now.

pipehitter155 08-28-2008, 10:48 AM if you wanna drop some coin go with a Zero chassis and Berg axles, if you wanna beginner rig you can find some really nice ones already built going really cheap over on rccrawler.com i picked up a whole setup with charger, dx3 radio w/ dig, really nice ax-10 crawler, etc. for around $6-700 which really isn't bad consider most of the stuff was new and it was already built too...
too bad i sold it last week to start the 4 link/air shock project on the XJ...hahaha...:laughing::laughing:

luke22 08-28-2008, 05:57 PM were are you getting the toyota bodies from they look fawkin sweet.
The Toyota bodies are from a Tamiya Hilux High Lift kit.
Todd W 08-28-2008, 10:23 PM meh crawling was fun for a while, did it way way way before what it is now... going fast is fun and jumping is even more fun :D
we started jumping off the roof, the deck, onto trampolines, over roofs, over fences, etc... distance contests, etc... that was FUN :)
Sold all my shit years ago to pay for 1:1 realated.
I know I had ~500 in batteries and a high end charger alone, high end batteries and a charger make for a WAY better driving experience.
green73 08-30-2008, 05:50 PM Here is my CR-01 Tamiya. Much like anything motorized I own I can't stop tweaking on it. I ditched the cantilever shock set-up. I used 80W90 in the shocks for oil too. It has a TON of rear steer (not by servo means). For the motor it is a 55 turn Integy, and the Electronic speed control (ESC) is the Tekin FXR (fully programmable). I am also running Lithium Polymer (LIPO) battery packs 2200mah 2 cell 7.4 volt. With LIPO batteries you have to have a charger that is capable of charging LIPO batteries. Not all chargers are. The LIPO capable chargers aren't cheap. But the pay-off is a little longer run time, and no memory in the batteries. There is so much more, but in the end it is just a ton of fun. I don't intend to comp with mine, just playing on landscaping rock piles and such. It is a fun time especially since you don't have to load the rig and camping gear up to do anything.
MikeyMike1969 08-30-2008, 09:33 PM AX-10 is the way to go. There parts are readily available as well as tons of after-market upgrades.

green73 08-30-2008, 10:43 PM I definitely will not say anything against the Axials. Best bang for the buck! Aftermarket is really big too. They have a good low CG and adding weights in the wheels seems to help a bit. I think that is going to be the next thing I do on my CR-01. The CG is way too high.
I went with the CR-01 for the scale look but it's pretty capable. The body has taken plenty of flops, rolls, back flips, endo's, and is holding up better than I expected.
76lcforty 09-03-2008, 11:51 AM No pics in the rocks yet but heres the tube chassis (semi-scale of the fusion chassis) I just built. Sitting on TLT axles. Going to cut it apart this winter and put the full interior in it for a little more scale...

luke22 09-05-2008, 09:10 PM prob. a dumb question but what are you building the tubed frames and cages out of? This is really interesting to me. Thanks for any input.
SnoopMaxx 09-06-2008, 03:00 AM 3/16" steel tube is the most used also 1/4"tube for bigger builds, bracing or welding

Isn't that kinda heavy?
SnoopMaxx 09-06-2008, 05:36 AM My tube top weighs 340g and the total weight of the car is just over 5 pounds with the MudSlingers on and I donīt have weight in the tires īcos of the speed (about 20mph)
A crawler uses between 4 and 6 ounces of lead weights in each wheel ... thatīs 20 to 24 ounces of ad on weight alone :)

My "tube" chassis is made from mostly 3/16 solid rod. And yes it's heavy, but that's not always a bad thing.
Welby 09-08-2008, 08:38 AM I have an AX-10, the thing's a blast. It's my way of getting a wheeling "fix" since I don't have a full sized ride anymore :D . Get the kit version, half of the fun is in building it
jp junkie 09-10-2008, 02:38 PM We bought an Ax 10 last Feb. Cant remember who we got it from. It was their stage 3 kit with some other stuff (about $600 or $700 bucks). My son operates it like an early Chris Durham rig, it still hasn't broken.:D
RedBullJeep 09-10-2008, 07:23 PM Lance...hook up with Hallenbeck from www.CKRCcrawlers.com
Get an Axial AX-10 and toy with it, doing the minor upgrades bit by bit. It's like wheeling a real 1:1 and responds so closely it's a blast to play. I've stepped up to the R3 front dig trans and done the CKRC suspension mods and am loving it. Just made the swap to Lipo batts, which I should have done from the get-go.
yotee 09-11-2008, 06:21 PM lance and camo, you may wanna check out the artr axial or the kit (just for parts). from there you have a really good platform. you can get aftermarket chassis to run the plastic bodies, or for about the same price as one of the chassis you can get a comp tuber and use your ax-10 parts.
as far as radio\reciever, you will definately want a decent one, a spektrum 3.0 will work flawlessly.
motor choices are kinda up to you. if you don't want any thing special than a standard 55 turn will do. if you actually want to have fun and possibly break things a novak goat brushless or holms hobbies cobalt 7 turn puller will put smiles on your face and still be able to crawl.
you will not want to skimp on a steering servo, it kinda sucks when you cant even turn your wheels on a rc.
speed controllers out there go from cheap to a couple hundred, the crappy cheap ones will not go into reverse without a delay. something like the novak goat or castle creations mamba max. the mamba max can be had with a cable to plug into your pc to program your throttle perameters. also you need to think about what type of battery you want. some speed controllers will not do lipo batterys.
the cons with the ax-10 based vehicles are the drive shafts but there are several decent upgrades.
oh, and SEARCH YOU NOOBS!!!!
hellbilly75 09-11-2008, 10:33 PM Just made the swap to Lipo batts, which I should have done from the get-go.
X2 on the lipo's I ran the big battery's on the top plate of my ax 10:shaking: and I have to say there is a night and day difference in how it climbs and side hills :smokin:
You might want to look for a used set up In my area there have been a lot of good deals on fully set up rigs for half the price of new with very low hours
Yotacrazy 09-15-2008, 04:59 PM I agree, put some time and effort into it and build a Super.

fordman1978 09-15-2008, 08:54 PM the ax10s are the best you can get. but nothing can hold up to how i beat on mine. ive been through about 5 metal gear servos, links, motors, 2 bodies, ring and pinions in both axles, 2 sets of pinions and spurs and alot more. but no other could take half that abuse. that is from 30 foot flips in moab, 10 foot backflips at my house, deep mud pits, and alot more though.
