: Engine Oil Coolers...who's running one?

Are any of you running an engine oil cooler with an accumulator ?
With all the high angle some of you are running with the stock motors and all tricked out i was concerned about lack of oil and damage this might cause.

The answer would be a great oil cooler -accumulator with about 1-1 1/2 maybe 3 qts oil in it to pressurize the oil system when the pressure from the pump runs low while extreme angles are in play.

I have done some research, and found both remote ,and sandwich type filter adapters to help with this.
I plan on getting a sandwich type with thermostats built into the fittings to allow the oil to warm up before it goes into the cooler .

I also plan on an electric fan to run when it gets to a certain temp,180 i think, this will blow on my tranny cooler as well.

Off road the extra low gear really heats up the tranny and radiator for that matter so cooling the oil can only help.

Both JC Whitney and Summit Racing have adapters,as well as Mr gasket .

I want to know where any of you got your stuff , and how it was mounted and are you happy with it?

Thanks guys

gary :)

I run an engine oil cooler. Sandwich type, 180 thermostat. Mounted it horizontal just above the manual fan hoping that it would blow air on it, but an electric would definetely be the way to go. My engine has yet to hit 200 with the cooler, and was hitting 225 without. Oil pressure is much better as well.

gary :) I do not really see the need. In the five years I have been rockcrawling I have yet to see an over heated/ lack of oil problem with my rig or anybody that I have wheeled with. In my opinion good idea but a lot of work for something that is not that necessary and just something else to go wrong. As I said this is my opinion.:D

i too see no need for an oil cooler.

with the correct thermostat, a good radiator, and shroud, you shouldn't run into over heating problems. i have had my truck for 2 years and never had it come close to overheating. the thermostat always sits in the same place wether i'm crawlin, road raging, or what ever. i had a bunch of mud stuck in my raditor one time and the temp moved up very slightly. cleaned it out and its back to normal!

I run one--I used a sandwich-type adapter, and I built a mount that puts the oil cooler in front of the radiator. The mount is independent of the radiator, so I can pull the radiator without messing with the oil cooler. I used AN 90-degree bulkhead fittings to go through the rad core support, with AN to hose barb adapters. I will go to braided steel hose and full AN fittings later, but this method got me started. Probably overkill, but something I don't have to worry about now. An oil cooler, however, is no substitute for a properly working radiator, water pump, fan, and shroud.

I wasnt really going with the oil cooler for engine temperature reasons som much as lack of oil during climbing.

The engine oil cooler will lower over engine temp prolly 10-20 degrees i have seen, but mostly i want the accumulator setup for oil starvation.
The cooler is just there as an added kicker,at high altittude my toy runs hot when crawling, and i have a good cooling system, but mine is also an automatic, whwich runs hotter anyway. andi only have an electric fan inside the shroud.
I did away with the fan clutch a long time ago,it robs too much power and does't do an efficient job imo.

Primary reason is the lack of oil when clibing a steady hill ,or coming down inot a gully and back up,it may seem like a short time, but lack of oil at 3k is going to wear some parts out in a hurry over time.
Now as far as overkill, well maybe so,but I found a great Nippondenso cooler off a new Hyundai of all things that wiil work great for me and an engine fan from a Volvo that is both narrow and able to move a lot of air .
i paid $9 for the cooler and $25 for the fan at Pick yer Part, now it may not be the best setup, but the cooler is for real. Now i need to get the sandwich adapter and plummb the thing and make the fan work on a switch or temp sensor.Temp sensor more likely.
I still need to get a higher cfm for my engine fan i beleive, i think the one i have is just not enough with a/c ,and at high altitude it just to weak to pull enough air through the rad. It was supposed to be ok for my application but i think its not.
I just been curious as to the lack of oil for off roaders, with the steep angles and all, some of these 22re have a little baffle and thats it.
I see this like the olds problem in a boat way back , too many sharp power turns and bam the rods spin a bearing from lack oil due to not enough baffles in the pan.
The 22re oil pump aint that good start with, compared to the after market ones and especially compared to a V8 chevy one. I gues you would run dry sump in serious off road racing to eliminate any need for this but ,hey im just a want be rockcrawling, trail riding , adventure seeking kinda driver...:) lol

I run one only because my 4.3 came with it. It runs through the left side of the stock chevy radiator.

I put an oil cooler on my engine. I thought the oil was getting hot and getting to thin, therefore losing oil pressure. After instalation of the cooler, everything was the same way. I didnt notice ANY difference. I have mine under the bed with an electric fan(same as my tranny cooler)
