Well it all started yesterday about 15 miles after I put on my homebrew k&n on my '90 XJ with a 4.0. Well it started to sputter a little after 10 miles but stopped, then again 5 minutes later but only those 2 times. So today just checking I put the stock intake back on to see if that may have been the cause.I left for work and everything felt fine until about 2 miles from my house when it started acting up again so I pulled over and popped the hood while It sat and idled, which was fine. So as I'm turning around to get back on the road it starts chugging good so I park and turn it off to check the vacuum lines and what not and all is good. Well I'm not far from home so I figure ill limp home, nope now it won't start. Its just turning over and attempting to start but seems to not be getting gas its kind of starting but only as I turn the key. I'm going to get a fuel filter and start there cause I have been running it on empty since I bought it 2 weeks ago and figure it sucked all the junk off the bottom. I figured I would still post up to get any advice I can cause I can't miss work again. Sorry for the long rambling story, I just finaly got it towed home after a long day. Any help is appreciated!
Thanks!!

when it isnt starting try to narrow down what you are missing. check for spark, fuel pressure, etc. one you find what you are missing you can zone in on what the problem is. there are alot of things that can act up intermittently and cause a no start so you got some diagnosing to do.

K&N filters have a bunch of oil on them that mess up MAF sensors. Most likely yours got covered in it and is not working properly. Get some electric cleaner (they used to have it at radio shack) or even brake parts cleaner and gently clean it. That is what it most likely is.

Last time I checked my buddies XJ's 4.0 doesn't have a MAF sensor...

Huh, I thought the 4.0 had an MAF. It used to happen all the time in my truck when I oiled the K&N.

Ok I lied its a dry knock off K&N so oil wont be the problem. And spark is good, it wants to start but dies right after.this is why I am leaning to fuel delivery problems. And yeah I don't have a MAF.
