before i start please excuse any stupid questions, i am a newbie. alright so im sorta in the market for a low milage low priced jeep tj. i found this one http://www.cars.com/go/search/detail.jsp;jsessionid=meJc8k-qz8rQvw5Xafs4G8m?tab=summary&paId=285774210&recnum=23&actLog=true&tracktype=usedcc&pageNumber=0&numResultsPerPage=50&largeNumResultsPerPage=0&sortorder=ascending&sortfield=PRICE+ascending%2cPRICE+descending&certifiedOnly=false&criteria=K-%7cE-%7cM-_23_%7cB-6000%7cH-%7cD-_249_%7cN-N%7cR-500%7cI-1%2c7%7cP-PRICE+ascending%2cPRICE+descending%7cQ-ascending%7cY-_1997-1998-1999-2000-2001-2002-2003-2004-2005-2006_%7cX-popular%7cZ-46118&aff=national and it says the front axle housing is broke. whats that mean exactly? can i drive it? and if i am goin to put bigger axles in(i know, i know, i should know about axle housings if im gonna put in bigger axles!)will i need to worry about it? thanks.

find out where it is broken at. if it is just the tubes, no biggie. if its the pumpkin, then the axle will need to be replaced soon.
i say buy it. take out the front shafts and sell them. take it to a local welder and weld up where it is broken. then replace the axle when you can.
double check the front control arms and the mounts on the axle and frame. make sure they are straight.
is this like an ebay thing, where you only have access to pictures before you pay for it? then i would pass unless you have a new axle ready to go in.

"THIS IS A SALVAGE TITLE JEEP IT NEEDS A FRONT AXLE HOUSING"

i would bet it took a hit to the axle and is bent. We do alot of rebuilders and Jeeps needing: Front axles, T-cases, and Fuel Pumps (poor design) is very common in salvaged jeeps.

well if i was gonna replace the axles now, i'd get it. but since it doesnt look like its drivable w/o an axle swap, ill just wait for another good deal.

axles, maybe. but if the frame was tweaked, and it probably is, that is a whole new ball game.

It's should be fairly easy enough to tell if it in badly messed up right? I'm sure the front susp is thrashed, Drag link and whatever else might be thrashed. But keep in mind, the drive train of that Jeep is worth about $2000 alone minimum. So say he gets it for 5k, worst comes to worst, he can part out the Jeep and recoup most.

It really depends on one thing, is he going to make it a crawler, or is he going to use it as a DD?

I've seen more than a few TJ's for under 5g's that have good titles and don't need major work to run. Next.
