: Running the Tranny Cooler in the Radiator

I have a built-in tranny cooler in my Radiator.

I am running an LT-1 and a 4L60E.

i have the fan set to run the LT-1 at 195-220* Trail and Highway. The radiator seems to be doing a great job as does the Black Magic fan.

The question I have is, if the tranny is being routed through the radiator, there is no way I can expect the temps to ever be below the engine water temp in the transmission, right?

What is the max operating temp on my 4L60E?

If I were to get another cooler, would you run it after the radiator, or would you skip the radiator all together?

Help (newbie to autos) :D

I dont run the radiator Cooler in the summer, just a remote cooler mounted in front of the radiator. I only use the radiator cooler in the winter when I want to keep the fluid above freezing temps. Im not sure on what the max tranny temp should be, but bearings should never be heated over 240* so that is my limit. (Im not saying that if the fluid is 240 it means that the bearings are 240 as well, but I would not doubt it one bit.)

Nolen, Run it to the cooler first then to the radiator, the loop in the radiator is small and is used to stabilize the temperature in the tranny cooler...use synthetic fluid(red line) and keep it under 250 and all should be good.

what matt said sounds pretty good, remember with your tires and rocks your gonna be generatin some serious heat, the rad cooler alone wont even begin to cool it.

I run mine through the rad and into the aux. tranny cooler. Average temp is 160*.

If you have an injected motor that needs to run at the 195-200 range your ATF running through the raditor is not gonna get below that.

I have a 4.0/999 in my YJ. I have the deep tranny pan, gauge kit big cooler yada yada yada. I had my tranny plumbed into the rad also. Once i disconnected it from the rad and just ran the mondo cooler my tranny temps dropped 20 degrees easy. I have left it disconnected ever since and have been very pleased. If you have a carbed vehicle i would say leave the tranny lines running to the rad.
