: Need to build a dirt cheap AR
Tufiremn 08-30-2008, 08:14 PM A buddy of mine wants me to build him an AR, though wants it to cost around $500-$600. Anyone know where I can find the cheapest lowers, and a flat top upper for around $300-$400. I'm thinking that I can build the lower for around $200, maybe less. Just need to find a used flat top upper w/ barrel.
misterfubar 08-30-2008, 08:21 PM Unless you can find someone that will do free transfers or someone local who has $100 stripped lowers you'll have trouble putting together a decent lower w/ a stock for $200. Unless you are happy with a 30 buck gun show special stock, then I guess it is doable.
Tufiremn 08-30-2008, 08:39 PM Actually I'll be throwing the useing the stock and FCG from my Bushy on it, already have a spare grip along with some other spare lower parts laying around. The tough part will be finding a complete upper for the right price. I'm almost tempted to just sell him my post ban HBAR Bushy for $600. Think that's a fair price? I had planned on fluting and free floating the barrel, along with a match trigger and better stock to make a nice tack driver. Though I guess I could just build another one with the parts that I really want to begin with.
animator 08-30-2008, 09:53 PM I got a DPMS lower from aloharover here on pirate for 100 shipped a while back. Added my own parts that I had found on sale for around 40 bucks.
Upper was a standard 20" assembly from Model 1 Sales that came out to be right at 500. Butt stock also came from Model 1 Sales, which was 55 with buffer and spring.
All told, I'm just over 700 into the rifle.
You can get non-chrome lined uppers with basic sights, and it'll be a bit less, but it's very difficult to stay under the $600 mark for AR rifles, unless you get some good gun show deals...
SCOTTS_4X 08-31-2008, 12:17 AM Pete (aloharover) just put one together for me (16" carbine, flattop, carry handle, a2stock, locking mag button and 10 rnd pmag) for right at 600 shipped. waiting on the CA waiting priod now, should have my gun on saturday.

Frankenyota 08-31-2008, 04:40 AM Sounds like Pete can give you a smoking deal, he did for Scotts 4X anyway. If you want a bottom dollar AR get a <$100 receiver from any number of places, find a local FFL who won't rape you on the transfer, and spend some time stalking this board:

Keith Strong 08-31-2008, 07:29 AM Hard to find an upper under $400. The cheapest I ahve built one for is about $600.
aloharover 08-31-2008, 07:55 AM Stripped double star lower - 100 shipped to your FFL. I do all items that go to an FFL for free.
Double Star 16" CAR kit - $470 shipped (PBB Members and PBB only get a free shipping coupon from me to use)
Go to cheaper then dirt and get one of their 30-40$ rear sights.
$13.50 PMags from me
Complete rifle ready to fill with ammo and go for a test drive.
packnrat 09-02-2008, 12:48 AM dirt cheep ar..will still cost a good 6 or 7 bills.
$125 + fees for the lower
$4 - 7 bills for the upper (complete) to much money to pece mill a upper together.
$50.00 for the stock.
have him just buy a well used rifle from someone. still a good 4-5 bills.

I've had my eye out for quite some time, and in my area - about the best used AR I've seen will still run you $600... *maybe* $550 if you can talk them down.
Red Dwarf 09-02-2008, 06:00 AM Essential Arms or Superior lower for around $80. I've found a guy near here that is supposed to do transfers for $5. Aim Surplus has CMMG LPKs for $56.95 with one cent shipping. After that, you start spending money. Watch the sale posts on AR15, and some of the other boards. Pete will treat you right - not always the cheapest, but the service is outstanding and he stands behind his stuff.
Sturgell 09-02-2008, 07:07 AM Doesn't one of the mfg's have dent and ding gunshow rifles for around 600?

Last I heard CMMG is no longer doing Bargain Bin. Too busy.

Fawk. After last months CMMG price increase thats cost :( When you add in shipping to me, shipping out, and CC fees 60$ is not even a break even.
I need to find out if CMMG can give me better prices. I will say that since they raised them I have seen my CMMG sales drop off.

Are teh CMMG LPK's any better than DPMS? I've been getting DPMS parts kits from Brownells for cheap, but the $10.50 almost no matter what shipping sucks if you are only ordering 1 or 2 things.
Slimjim 09-02-2008, 03:56 PM What about one of the RRA parts kits with a 100 dollar lower?

Get the cheapest parts kit you can find, I didn't really notice any difference between the quality of a RRA kit and a DPMS.
Albin 09-02-2008, 06:09 PM Try these guys:http://www.cavalryarms.com/MKII.html
I just ordered some desert tan furniture for my BM/Armalite carbine, very good prices and excellent service.
Good luck.

The DPMS LPK that I used in my CMMG build was decent. Though the detent hole for the selector has a little play when set to safe. Still functions properly, just doesn't sit right. Course I guess technically I just used the FCG and take down pins, as I used anti roll pins for the FCG, and tossed an Ergo grip on it.
BTW, This was my first build. Loven the hell outta the CMMG stuff. Got it all right before the price jump.

The SureShot POS Red dot is history. Waiting until after my wedding and honeymoon in Oct. Then it will be sporting an EOTECH.
Tufiremn 09-02-2008, 06:29 PM BTW, Thanks for all the info. I'm really leaning toward just selling the Bushy that I was going to rework as a target / Varmint rifle, and build a 6.8 or 7.62 for myself.
Napoleon047 09-02-2008, 07:28 PM wow, 20 posts and nobody has mentioned del-ton.com
