Friends,
For the past several decades, off-road vehicles have provided
fun and enjoyment for millions of people across in our state.
California has always been a leader in this activity, and in November
we will again have an important role to play. Governor Gray Davis
and the other California Democrats backed by the extreme
environmental movement have repeatedly moved against our ability to
benefit from the outdoors. When election day comes, we must take a
unified stand and vote for Bill Simon, the candidate who understands
the need to keep the land open. We must all vote on November 5.
The state of California has seen reductions in access to
public land over the past four years. The leadership of the
Off-Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation Division, the government agency
charged with overseeing off-road activities, is stacked with extreme
environmentalists. As we know, the environmental lobby will stop at
nothing to restrict both public and private lands. Species shown
scientifically to be in no danger are labeled threatened, and even
the California energy crisis was used as an excuse to seize land and
put it off-limits to use. Just recently, Governor Davis signed AB
1493, a bill that would drastically reduce our access to many of the
vehicles used for off-road recreation. We need someone in the
Governor s office who won't cater to the radical environmental groups.
All who enjoy the back country become Off Roaders when they
set wheel on a dirt road. Whether you want to enjoy nature by
yourself or go for an outing with friends and family or ride your
horse in a Wilderness, you need vehicle access to do it. The back
country experience provides an escape from the daily grind. The
economic benefits are also well demonstrated. It is estimated that
off-road recreation of all kinds generates more than six billion
dollars a year for the California economy. It also provides ten's of
thousands of jobs. We must save our jobs, our recreation, and the
future for our children.
Over the past twenty years in California, the registration of
Off-Highway Vehicles has more than doubled, yet the land available
has been almost cut in half. The land of many uses has become the
land of none. Radical environmentalists want to take the land away
from everyone, so that no one but their elite can use it. (less than
1/2 of 1 percent of all use) Bill Simon understands the love and
respect the people of the off-road community have for the land. He
knows our commitment to conservation, and he will keep pubic spaces
available for multiple-use.
The environmental lobby uses its weight to push through single-minded
legislation, condoned by the current administration. We have a
chance now to organize effectively and make our voices heard. We
have seen the poor record of the Davis Administration, and we fear
what four more years of it may bring. I urge you to demonstrate your
support for Bill Simon. Sign up as a volunteer at
www.SimonForGovernor.com, and show the people of California that OHV
enthusiasts, back country explorers, conservationists, and other
family recreationists are active citizens. We must assure that all
who need access to our deserts and mountains are registered to vote
and that they vote on November 5th.
The rights that we lose will never be regained. Our only hope is to
stop the erosion before it happens. We can make a difference and
preserve our activities and access.
