 I want to replace my T4 transmission with a Jeep T5 transmission. I would
like to know the pros and cons of this. Also if it will fit and what mods
will I have to do to my Jeep J10. It has the 258 I6 and it is a 1983. Any
help would be much appreciated. You can contact me at wkosonen@mcn.org I
will be waiting and thank you for the help.:p

Why? They're both equally crappy. Why don't you just put in a real transmission like a T-18 or something and be done with it?

Oh, and you might wanna peruse the Jeep talk mission statement while you're at it...

Here, I'll bite anyhow:

Pro:
You get a 5th gear. (that really is the only pro, too)

Con:
You will still have the same weak-ass tranny that's apt to shit the bed at any given momment.

I think that about covers it.

unless you swapped in the T-4, i'd bet your j-10 has a T-176.

if you really want a t-5, then only option i would consider is one of the "world-class" model t-5's

What would should i put in there. I really want a 5 speed. and i am not planning on up grading to a v8 ever so that is not a option.

You could buy two t5s, one Jeep, the other world class t5 and have a tranny guy put the good internals in the Jeep case. Or you could use a Clark 5spd or a NV series 5 spd, but plan on buying some expensive adapters. The jeep t5 had a recall on the third gear, cost $250 just for the upgrade, not the replacing. W/C t5 has a good third gear and will hold up well. Your J10 is a little heavy for a t5, but if you don't plan on beating the sht outof it, it'll hold much better than the t176 that's probably in it now. The t176 has a cir-clip on second gear that blows out easy, it's a two dollar part that cost hundreds to fix, turn it into an anchor. You want a good crawl ratio? get a granny t18, a 4-1 x-fer case, 3.5 gears and some 35s. 84-1 C/Ratio and 60 mph at 2k rpm.

Or if you're dead set on the 5 speed, you could go with an AX15.

NV4500 baby! Best manual tranny anyone ever swapped into a Jeep, if you ask me. Not real cheap though...

Aren't those AX 15 expensive to fix and fix often. I've heard they're not that great. As for NV4500, awesome tranny but expensive and the output shaft is higher than input shaft, that could cause more drive line problems. Another idea is the NV3500 found in newer TJs and possibly Cherokees, not as stout as the 4500 but may be a bit cheaper to ahold of one.

if it's a T150 or T176 b/h, NP435. Granny low 4 speed. Course you'd have to adapt your transfer case to it.

i am looking at doing the same sort of thing. cept I have the T-5 and want to find another 5 speed if possible. will be running 35s and want something that won't crap out on me. i have the budget of a college student paying his own way, so the NV4500 is out. how stout are the ax15s? and i wouldn't mind havin the T18 but what is the cost of adapters and such for the 258 and d300? someone tell me the right way to go here till i can pull up some funds for a real tranny.

My 80 J10 SB 258 np208 got a CJ7 T5 that is working well enough as a replacement for the T177 that was gone when I got the truck. Question; can you supply a picture of the tunnel cover that your T4 has. I want to copy the opening for a shifter boot like your stock setup? Does your J10 T4 have a flag shifter or the larger stick?
