Ok, I picked up my 96 ram from the tranny shop and noticed no free play in the TC shifter. Not knowing much about 231 shifter adjustments, I just drove the truck, until I heard a grinding noise comming from the TC. At that point I adjusted the shifter myself. Now it grinds alot, and I think it is form the shift fork, but not sure (how the hell do I know, I only work on 203 and 205's). How long is it gonna hold up. i already stopped driving the truck, but how far COULD i drive the truck if need be? (like if I need to take it to a shop 30 miles away).
Also, when slowing down, then accelerating, the truck feels like it goes into nutral, then into drive, putting a large amount of torque at the tranny output, and on new tranny parts. Can my tranny problem cause damage to the TC? I am asking because I have about 500 miles on my transmission, and so far am not happy, and am afraid that I may have to do something if my truck isn;t fixed, and heck, I worked on my transfer case when I realized that the shifter was out of wack. Anyways, thanks for the help. Garrett

Garret, My 231 had about 20,000 miles on it when I did the short shaft kit. I tore it apart and found that some little plastic stuff wore off the shift fork. When the T case was shifted from 4 low to 4 high while still moving it wears out the stuff. It sounds like you need at least a new shifter fork.

Dealer. Not hard to replace. Tear into it now and save yourself from getting more expensive damage.

thats what it sounds like to me.

Heres a nice little quote from my tranny guy I will NOT replace your transfer case, so get it out of your head NOW. It is a seperate unit. Sound right to everyone out there?

think so? On the up side he is installing the transfer case for free... though.. I am thinking maybe I should just do it myself.
