OK I need some help from you guys, who is still running efi, and hasnt gone nuts trying to cut down the factory harness? does any one make a plug and play set up that doesnt make it cheeper to just switch over to propane? I am sure this has allready been adressed, but my A.D.D. wont let me search through all the build threads, so if someone could please point me down the right isle Id be much obliged. #112

SDS is easy to install but a PITA to tune. and you can get rid of a lot af stock crap you have to run with the stock set up

PM Dr. Tweak. He's a PBB vendor, and does a lot of EFI harnesses. As I recall, he said it would only be about $100 to strip an RE harness down to only the essentials to make the engine run properly.

That's my plan, and I'll do my own "body wiring" based off of my 12voltguy panel.

if you grab a 89 and newer intake and efi setup out of a truck, you get a better intake and throttle body setup, plus all the engine wiring is in one harness. Then just elimnate the smog stuff if you want and your good to go. I picked a whole setup for $100 and then got another one for spares for $50.

I hope this guy Tweak can make that happen. Let us know what you find out.
I don't think that I have seen an EFI rig running for less than $750 unless you do it yourself.
As far as I know know.

SDS system = $800-$1400

Off Road Solutions = $600-$1200

Propane = $1000

a 90's donor would be pretty much free and is real easy to do. All the engine wiring is in one loom on the passenger side. The work is cutting out the extra smog stuff and you only need to do that if you want to if anything its better to leave it all intact.

I went with the ORS harness and that was one of the best moves I made. It had all the factory connectors, plugged right in. I think I had to run about 3 or 4 wires, and it fired right up. I still have the harness, and it's going to be for sale soon. I haven't had time to deal with it yet. PM me if your interested.

This was for stripping down an RE harness of all the extraneous body wiring to still run on the RE ECU.

In looking back through my PM box, I don't have the PM from Dr. Tweak. He was evidently a PBB vendor over a year ago, but I didn't see a lot of current posts.

I did have some messages from both John Scheidhauer/Alpine Auto (sp?) 'mtbrjon' and Dave Edwards/Davez Offroad 'TOYOTAPARTS' about getting buggy harnesses built. I'll probably talk to one of these guys when I get closer.

Lance started mine by plugging everything in, starting the engine, then unplugging connectors one at a time to figure out if it made a difference.

This is why Propane is a great option. It will run upside down and there is very little electrical to mess with.

The trick is getting 5 gallons from some dood on the lakebed around 10:30pm! thanks again John!

Though will propane becoming more common, I could certainly see folks having extra tanks here and there now.

The whole no propane thing can be avoided by bringing extra propane with you, just like you would with gasoline. And a 22r will go all weekend on a 10 gallon tank:smokin:

Tarbaby, has a lot larger build fund than I do , we built his from the ground up, and my crap runs great now. I will stick with injection for now, but if it starts holding back the build up, I will probably change over to propane

Agreed:
Typical wheeling weekend:
Friday arrive 5-8 pm wheel until well after midnight
Saturday 8am to well after midnight
Sunday 8 am - 2-3pm
I always carry a spare tank. First tank will last until mid-day sunday. I use very little of the second tank.

Will this plug into the '85 body harness to?

And I've searched and read some conflicting things about what can/can't be removed, and what/if it does anything. So my question is what can be removed for a trail only rig that will simplify the crap under the hood of my '85?

thanks!
