I got to hack on a vintage rig and have only seen a couple of bumper pics in here. Just my hack bumper to share:

Started by taking off the stock bumpers and cutting the tub back to the tailgate hinges:

More trimming and testing the bumper tie-ins:

Next we cut the sliders, these could take a tbone from a semi:

You can just barely see my first attempt at a leveling system for the bender. I ended up using a different setup:

I like it, working up the courage to cut mine the same way. Probably cutting the front up to the lower front grill line as wel.

I think it looks very nice. (Way better then mine!)
But why is it spaced so far away from the body? I would of pushed that top bar almost flat with the tailgate.

Couple things.
We are going to tie in a tire mount.
It will very closely resemble the front bumper that needs to house the winch.

I spent a retarded amount of time making sure it had good clearance all around, so yes it has .5" of clearance to the tailgate when it is down. The license plate frame just barely touches if you dont fold it down first.

Not a big fan of tube bumpers because, most of them take on the "Pre Runner" look (which I think looks silly on a trail vehicle.....just my opinion) but, you nailed it! It looks great! I think it would be perfect with a diamond plate top (I like diamond plate:D) to function as a step and cover up the exposed frame rails as well as add more (probably dosen't need it ,though) structural integrity. Nice job!---------Hans

Good work! I'll be bending up one pretty much identical to that. Mine had the Duff's pre runner bumpers on it when I bought it and the tailgate smashes into it in the down position. Nice attention to detail, Duff :shaking:

But it looked good on paper!

Gripguru, have you or how have you capped the ends?

I have not capped the ends yet because he is getting the gorilla war flares. I really want it to look sharp when it is done. It will be capped though. The sliders still need capped too, we just have to make sure there is no trimming needed first. I'll get the slider pics soon.

Its taken me close to 10 years to prefect my tailgate to bumper smashing!
My rear bumper is like a wave in the ocean though...

Thats no joke....talk about the consistent problem with adding rear bumpers to eb's...

I'm going to guess 2". Partly because thats what it looks like, and partly because thats what I plan on using. :D

I didn't have that problem, must be just you and your bronco.:D

But they did screw up the fit to the frame, so the first set I got for free and they sent me a new set. So it was pretty cool.

Well, if I was a wuss and bought my bumpers instead of building them I probably could have gotten a replacement set too :flipoff2:
