Got my a-arm extension from RoverTym and am installing it this Sunday.

Any tips from the crowd before I undertake this?

I gotta agree with 9V, PB Blaster that thing like there's no tommorrow. I haven't done mine yet, but I will be in the next month when I swap out axles. Everyone I've talked to said that the bolts were a real pain to get loose.

What I find is that the nuts aren't rusted on, the bolts are rusted into the ball joint bracket. All the PB'laster in the world wouldn't help, I had to pull the whole assembly and heat it up with oxy/acetlyene. My own however came right apart. Be sure to anti-sieze the bolts when reinstalling.

Fear Factory (Kyle) has the right/best advice in my opinion. That is how I got mine apart right after I first purchased my vehicle. It comes right out now. One thing about anti-seize is that if it is around high heat it seams to gunk up and become less of a lubricant and more like a sealant. I use the NAPA brand though, so it may just be the cheap shit that does that.

On the other hand I find it difficult to determine which end of the screw driver to use :flipoff2:

Tom:

How much of an extension did you get for your A-Arm? 1"?

I was measuring, trying to decide the max offset that would fit without bumping the fuel tank of a D1, and it looks like 1.25" would clear, but 1.5" might be too close.

I'm trying to fit 36's by relocating the axle back as far as possible, staying out of my doors where i can, thus the need for the maxed-out a-arm extension.

Start by articulating your rear springs. See the compressed length of the spring. Also look at the diff under compression. I have thought about doing this in the past and plan on moving my axle back close to 3" in the future. I saw no reason on mine that it couldn't be done.

You obviously would need to make a thick football shaped piece of metal to move the spring perch plates forward by however long you move it back. John could whip these up no problem. You could get his heim jointed trailing links and the A-arm extension and have no fabrication work at all, other than installing the trailing link mounts.

Just got home from the shop where I, er, uhm, he put it on. I bought a 3/4" extension, and then put about 7/8" worth of spacers in the RoverTym trailing links. Rear angle with the CV is dead on, and It looks like I (somehow) gained an inch of clearance behind the door. It looks as if the 33 x 12.5 swampers will clear no problem, but haven't tested it yet.

However, it does look extremely close for the diff hitting the gas tank. Going to have to flex and see. One thing is definate is no rear diff guard will fit anymore.

QT Services rear guard, anyone?

Adam:
Yeah - i know what you mean about relocating the spring, although I was thinking of keeping my spring perched on my axles and relocating the top spring mount back along the frame.

Tom:
I have 33x12.50's on now and only have Rovertym's extended trailing arms with the middle spacer installed. My stock A-Arm bushing assembly is only slightly tweaked, and I still have an acceptable angle on my diff/pinion. I've pretty much chopped off the rear quarter panels below the trim line, though, so that was the obvious place to move the tires. - hehehh

And yeah, at least this is ONE way to get a 101!

Never thought of the 101 angle. I should change my thread title to Disco 101 Conversion!!! Much more sexy.

DiscoFvr - I have a rear CV, so I put in the fat and skinny spacer. My tire looks like it should clear the door plenty.

Does your diff hit the gas tank?

Snap a few pictures of the top spring mount located back if you go this route. I feared damaging and having to refab a new spring bucket. I know it wouldn't be hard at all, but it is the time I am thinking of.

Also I am a "bolt on lover" (yeah right ;) ).

Will do, it may be a while, as my Rover is not with me, it is still at the shop getting the rear bumper powdercoated and I am taking off for vacation next week.

I did drive it when completed a bit and the springs were making more noise against the cones than usual, but it was so late at night that I was too exhausted to remember to start checking out the spring angles.

I should have some pics up soon of the overall install of the extension though, I did take them.
