my father in law has an caprice interceptor <blues brothers> its got cop engine, cop shocks , cop brakes and so forth </blues brothers>

but it also has a fragged 10 bolt in it. a mechanic shop in Salem wants 1500 to setup a set of 4.10s in it... I told him I thought that was an overcharge and that we should look for a replacement axle, or replace the R&P .. I figure I could screw up several sets of gears getting it right and still get him out ok..

Ive rebuilt the tranny on a samurai, the a dana 20 and 300 tcase, as well as a samurai tcase so Im no stranger to gear oil but it seem like it could be a friggin nightmare chaseing prussian blue for hours on end... how hard is it really to pop your axle cherry?

as an aside the junkyards list an axle for 500 for a caprice ... a number that he nor I are down with...

Call Cary @ Kaiser Brake and Alignment in Eugene, Or. He does killer work at a fair price.

We set up diffs for guys locally all the time for a couple hun.
$1500 sounds right if he's suppling a locker/rebuild/brand new gears/ fluids/'and installing in the car after.
$500 in labour for a shop isn't unreasonable if that's the case.

Like I said in the other thread, the info is out there, read lots, and try it yourself. You need about $200 in tools and access to a press though, but if you're gonna be building you're own diffs and such the tools and press pay for themselves really quick.

I (as alot of other people im my area) charge about $280.00 just for labor. Gears are about $120.00 and the set up kit is about another $100.00 or so. Price on the diff depends on what you want.

The ring and pinion and install kit (all new bearings, seals and shims) should run $300 or so. I charge $150-200 to setup gears (I don't operate a professional shop or anything). $1500 is ridiculous.

If you are interested in trying to setup the gears yourself, there is a great writeup here in the tech section.

Part of the cost of going to 4.10's (which were not the original gears) is probably a new carrier. Once you get the other side of 3.73 you need a new carrier or ring gear spacer.
You really want 4.10's in this car?
Most come with 3.08's and a common swap is a set of 3.42's.
Police and Impala SS as I recall these are the same gears as a pickup 10 bolt.
