Well DUH, I wonder why? (side note: I was riding with Frankie when he did all of the damage). I saw my life flash before my eyes!!!!! 0 to 60 and then back to 0 in seconds? Stopping 20’ before the tree line with the rear tires in the air? and the sinking sensation when you hear *CRACK* *BAM* *POW* and feel the axle roll underneath the chassis . . . I’ll just watch next time! Somebody else can have the ride of their life . . .

Some guy with a Toyota tube chassis, running 120" wheelbase and 42" tires.
The entire event took place in about a 100 yard stretch. You left one gate and right into the next one, no turns, no downhills, and the "cones" were foam balls hanging out of trees on a string.

I thought he was running 39's? Maybe I am wrong. He had to have been longer than 120" wheelbase, he looked to me like he was pushing 130" easy. Maybe wrong again? Man that thing was one ugly peice; and the turning radius was terrible. But man did the kid(16 y.o.) drive!! Last I heard he was about 40 points ahead of second place.

I would say that the Rocket City Rock Crawlers did a pretty good job for not being a big sanctioning body. I had a pretty good time.
I still have not decided if I like the balls hanging from strings though. Some things I like about them(you can not lean over them without tagging them like you could do with a cone), but there are problems(competitors being penalized for antennas hitting strings way up in the air).

I never saw that rig? Was it the orange YJ that broke on the second obstical? That was the only competition vehicle that I did not get to check out. He definitly had a wicked motor by the sound of it.

Well, I sure wish that you could have made it...... purely for entertainment value:nuke:

I guess you are talking about me??
The hydraulic steering cylinders that I sell are Arlington 2.25" bore, 1.5" shaft, 8" stroke(4" from center to lock) double ended (balanced), welded steering cylinder with foot mounts complete with 3/4 x 5/8 QA1 Endura series rod ends and jam nuts for $320. I can install cheaper rod ends if that is your choice. The QA1 Endura series rod ends are top of the line.

If you already have heim joints, or you want to source your own, I will sell the steering cylinder modified to accept heim joint rod ends for $250.
Or you can get it for $200 with no modification, but expert machine work is required to the ram to fit heim joints.

I would love to have you torture test one. If you can run it without:nuke:I think there would be nothing to worry about with anyone else.

I can't just give you one though, sorry. I am spending all of my savings on some wicked axles tommorrow, so I am waay broke at the moment.
Frankie, E-mail me so we can discuss this privatly.

Where were you?

I was on the right side of the course (looking up) right where the jeep blew out the 208 transfer case. I was with Kevin Mize (big red hybrid in EROCC (toploader4x4)), his spotter and a couple of other guys.

I thought he was running 39's? Maybe I am wrong. He had to have been longer than 120" wheelbase, he looked to me like he was pushing 130" easy. Maybe wrong again?

I walked up and looked at his tires, they were 42s. They just looked smaller because of the way he had them cut. I asked him what his wheelbase was, it was 120" and he said it weighed about 1900 lbs.

I never saw that rig? Was it the orange YJ that broke on the second obstical?

He was not allowed to compete because he was a member of the Rocket City Off Road Club. It was the light blue rig that winched the Jeep that broke his transfer case down off the hill.

I still have not decided if I like the balls hanging from strings though.

I didn't care too much for the balls. First of all, they were 96" apart. Very few trucks could get through them if you had to lean at all, because they would hit the string with the rollbar or something. Some of the smaller rigs were actually going under the balls( would that not be considered leaving the course?)

heep86
08-04-2002, 08:42 AM
how high were the balls off of the ground?
it kind of sounds cool to have hanging balls, because the driver would have better vision of the boundries.

350 Samurai

how high were the balls off of the ground?
They was not any set height. They were anywhere from about 3 feet to 6 feet off the ground. It's not a bad idea I guess, but maybe they should not include the string as part of the boundary. If you just made the ball itself it would eliminate a lot of the problems with leaning over and hitting it or hitting the string with your CB antenna (that did happen). On that note, if the string doesn't count and you hit it with the rollcage and move the ball away from your truck, how do you score that?
What about the going under thing? That is a little unfair advantage. One Toyota buggy thing could go under the balls all the way up to his windshield area. Was he not off the course?
I don't know...good, bad...black, white....ying, yang :rasta:

He blew the whole backside of the transfercase off.

350 Samuari, you must have been the one wearing a zook shirt, sitting on one of the big rocks next to obstacle 4?

You must have seen me, I was running up and down through there with the digi cam , trying to catch good shots, wearing a BRIGHT yellow Fox hat.

The idea with the strings is good, they just need to change some things. The strings need to be further apart as 350 Sammi said. And I think the strings need to go almost all the way to the ground. I like the idea of the sring that it makes sort of a hallway that the vehicle has to travel down, instead of just curbs(cones) which the vehicle can lean over. It makes it much more challenging because you have to anticipate every lean that the vehicle is going to make as it travels through the strings.

So why didn't you compete 350 Sammi? The pictures of your rig that I have seen look pretty awesome.

Yep, that would be me. I remember seeing you, you had your work cut out for you.

So why didn't you compete 350 Sammi?
Yea, we talked about that most of the 4 hour drive home. We originally went there out of curiosity. Kevin (toploader4x4) wanted to see what the RCAA event was all about.
There were 3 out of us 5 that have rigs capable enough to enter.
Kevin and Randy should have entered just for the seat time and who knows maybe they would have brought home a paycheck.
Hindsight is 20/20.
Plus, mine is all apart right now. I took off all the pieces that were removable and had them painted. The rest of it, basically just the cab, I am taking to be painted Monday.

Being at the event makes me want to do a little competing when my rig is done(at least 6 months away). I was pretty dissapinted with the skill level of many of the drivers. But the kid who won, I must say, did a really good job

With 53" tires and Unimog axles, I may hit some of the gates, but the ride up will be like an escilator.:D

Oh and the top of the cage is still only 7' high, so it is not really a monster in every sense. Really big tires, 26" differential ground clearance, somewhat small overall dimensions, and 400 hp. I think it should hold its own. Only thing I worry a bit about is weight. I am hoping to end up under 4500 #'s. We will see.

Yeah, I will be at EROCC , if not competing then I will just have to settle for watching you guys pay money to break your junk. Hopefully I can make it to spectate for the September event. It is like an 8 hour drive for me to get there though, so that sucks. I lived less than 2 hours from there a year ago.

Daniel, I am supposed to be paying for my axles today once I get all the needed information for wiring the money.

The axles will be coming from Germany sometime this month or early September.
I already have my tires, here are some links to pics of those.

The pictures are REALLY BIG , that is why I linked them.

#1 (http://www.sierrarockcrawlers.com/community/station/Tire%20Pictorial%20low.JPG) #2 (http://www.sierrarockcrawlers.com/community/station/Tire%20pictorial.JPG) #3 (http://www.sierrarockcrawlers.com/community/station/Tire%20tread.JPG) #4 (http://www.sierrarockcrawlers.com/community/station/Side%20tread%20view.JPG) #5 (http://www.sierrarockcrawlers.com/community/station/Michelin%20man.JPG)

I will have pictures of the clearance that the Mog axles and Michelins give when the axles arrive.
