Hey guys, I was going to go solid front on my 96 silverado k1500 but I decided against it. I have pretty much destroyed the rear end in it... Someone said they have a 10 bolt out of an 03 chevy with stock gears that they just went through. Question is; can I put an 03 rear end in a 96? What problems can I run into? What do I have to look out for? I would appreciate the help guys. Ohh, I have a rear 60 for sale if anyone needs it.

Should be a direct bolt in...unfortunately, I can't tell you what kinds of problems you can run into, although you can run into as many as you want for all I care...:flipoff2:

Is the ratio the same between them...gear ratio (I think I needed to clarify that)?

Other than that, as stated it should bolt in...not sure if it;ll be plug and play with any electrical hookups though. Try it and report your findings to the board.

yes, gear ratios need to match, whatever ratio is in your front needs to be matched to the donor 10 bolt.

So no SAS and you're swapping IN a 10 bolt? I'm confused.

Is the 03 rear disk? If so you might need a different proportioning valve.

I am reading that he was going to sas...cancelled that plan.....but he also destroyed his rear 10b in his '96 and wants to replace it with an '03 10b.

Yeah judging by what you guys have said, I think Im just gonna have to pass on it. I don't wanna rely on someone telling me they just went through it when I have a rear end out of the same year truck just 2 wheel, need to go through it. Which brings up another question, is there like a gearing tag or some form of identification on the housing that let's you know the ratio of the gears? Or is there like a website that tells you the stock ratios? I guess Im gonna hafta tear into both axles anyways, I just hafta see the damage, so I can find out that way. I still wouldn't mind knowing about identifying tags or websites that tell you what you need to know, so if anyone out there has any info I'd appreciate it.

the code should be in the glove box......a whole list of codes will be there.

You say you have a rear out of the same year truck...just 2 wheel <<<< do you mean 2wd? If so, there is a width difference between a 2wd and 4wd rear......on these newer trucks anyway.

me too, ditch the stock 10 bolt:barf::barf::barf: and get the rear 60 in there, with a solid front, might cost a little but it will be worth it. youll have sweet 96 the drives better than stock if you set it all up right
