: MAIDEN VOYAGE WITH 350 was a bummer
DCruiser138 08-01-2002, 09:41 PM i drove around the block...very loudly (open headers) and it was gettin hot. like 205+. so i came home...radiator was low. filled it and checked oil to see the oil was fukin whipped cream!!!
now, the first start up was easy! it fired right up after itting in my garage for like 6 months!! and it ran ok...i never gave it any heavy skinny pedal...but it didnt run too shitty for having it not been timed.
so you guys think its craked block or head gaskets?....i hope its the head gasket. what do i look for and how hard is it. if i can do a motor swap...i can do this myself...but how long should i expect to spend...seems like a 3 hr job maybe....i dunno! all i know is i got fuked again!!!:(
texican 08-01-2002, 09:56 PM I'm afraid the only way to pinpoint it, is to jerk both heads, take them and have them fluxed, and checked for warpage, and hope they find something, cause if they don't, you got block troubles. Small blocks are not notorius for head gasket troubles, and most I've run into blow steam out the tailpipe, but don't mix the water into the oil, we did a single head replacement last week on one, head on passenger sie was cracked.
I would think you may have problems in the intake gasket area, where the coolant flows out of the heads into it.
What is the history on this motor?
Butch
Big DW 08-01-2002, 10:10 PM seriously doubt that it's the block...could be a bad head gasket or what texican said...intake manifold gasket!
oakley 08-01-2002, 10:28 PM any chance it is overfull with oil and the crankshaft is whipping it?
The Jerk 08-01-2002, 10:43 PM 205 aint nothing, but in a short period of time it is. but if the oil is fubar so is the head area, call me tomorrow i aint doing shit and ill be down at grady's working/cleaning my rig up i can come over and help with anything. jiMMy
woody 08-02-2002, 04:59 AM Gaskets are cheap and your labor is "free". I had once where I built a 350 - hi-nickel block, .060 flattops, .020 shaved heads, large cam, 1.6 roller tips, balanced, the works. All together and sure enuf - overheated and foamed the oil. Pulled the brand new head gaskets and couldn't see anything wrong with them. Installed another new set and no problems. Motor ran for another 6-7 years of HARD mud-race and offroad use before getting detuned - it's now my rock-crawl motor. Amazing what a cam change will do for them.
I blew a 327 and in one day A friend and I stripped down to shotr block pulled the motor. dissassembled other motor from 700R4. Dropped in complete motor (carb and everything) and had it fired up. (exhaust wouldn't fit new motor so I had is fixed teh nest day).
SO i would say you could do it all in a day and be driving again (assuming no cracked block or heads)
woody 08-02-2002, 09:43 AM I have beaten that time....inline 6 on a Saturday evening, fired up for the first time after a bearing change. Sunday noon, spun bearing. Monday 10am (Labor day, 1990), we borrow a friends wrecker and pull the inline 6/trans/t-case as one unit and reattached it to a 305/Advance bellhousing we had...by 4pm the truck was driving again, this time with a SBC.
crawlin cruiser 08-02-2002, 02:14 PM ahhh wheres that goood ole reliable 2F when ya need it:flipoff2:

Reliably holding down the back yard patio slab, yup thay do a great job!
DCruiser138 08-02-2002, 07:25 PM so i took the heads and shit off today. there was that cummy lookin goo all over the place!! argh!
---and more importantly...NO CRAKCS ANYWHERE!!!!so, i installed it all back together after cl;eanuing and such, and got a new intake since the other was pretty sketch... i figure if this doesnt work, then its some internal crack, or my heads and block are so warped that i need to rebuild anyway. in that case or situation...i will be looking for a new motor.
so....ill ask now...anyone have a running 350 because im sure this wont work....fuked again!!!
 :(
Macgyver 08-03-2002, 07:32 AM you wouldn't be able to see the cracks most likely, that's why someone above mentioned getting them magnafluxed. you may get lucky with replacing the gaskets, but if not, i'd get those heads fluxed before i pull that block........
bigfoot 08-03-2002, 07:48 AM I agree with macgyver, you wont know if you have any cracks in the heads just by looking at them you have to take them in to be magnufluxed. While your at the machine shop have them check them for warpage too.
The Jerk 08-03-2002, 10:07 AM for the ammount of water in the oil i would guess youd have to be abel to see something. IT WAS A LOT! jiMMy
DCruiser138 08-03-2002, 12:25 PM yes...within ten minutes of running this bitch....there was no oil...it was all an oreo milkshake!!!!
texican 08-03-2002, 04:10 PM DCruiser,
Almost every time I answer a question, and go to the trouble to try and be precise and cover all the bases, it's because I learned the hard way what should be done. The most recent was having to redo a 2F head gasket job, because the head did not "look"
warped, or check warped with a straight edge, in early spring.
You can't see cracks in heads with the naked eye, nor can you check for warpage even with a good straight edge.
Maybe this will turn out good, but you have your doubts..........as do I.
Butch
DCruiser138 08-04-2002, 12:44 AM dude....i totally still have doun\bts. if it still fuks me...ill yank the heads and have em fluxed... i started it and idled around a bit and got no loss of rad fluid or any raised oillevel. so far it looks good. ill put the headers on tomorow and cruise and see what happens. :(
Mr McGee 08-04-2002, 10:55 PM you ran it without headers? That'll wake up the neighbors...hehe.
DCruiser138 08-05-2002, 01:04 PM hehe....ya it did! the old guy accross the street wasnt tioo happy either!:flipoff2:
--- well, i did a few oil changes on it and flucshed it w/ some motor cleaner crapola.....and i think itll be ok. i hafta get exaust so i can actually drive it and really see whats up......
