: Waterproofing carbed 350 ??
bigchevytruckdriver 09-09-2008, 10:52 AM What do I need to do to waterproof my carbed, HEI 350 anyone have pics of snorkel setups. I dont intend to go through deep water but want to be ready for anything. If anyone has set theres up how deep have you taken it ? And have you had any problems?
botiejeep 09-09-2008, 10:56 AM As far as the electrical goes I have used a clear laquer spray paint and sprayed it all over the ends of the plug wires-distributor-etc. Anything electrical that can get water in it will need to be done.
rcurrier44 09-09-2008, 11:14 AM Do you want to be ready for a couple feet and a splash or do you want to be able to submurge it?
Some things to think about:
Sealed/remote vent on radiator overflow
Trans and motor dipstick
oil fill cap
charcoal canaster (or fuel tank vent)
seal and remote vent for power steering
seal and remote vent for distributer
electric fan that you can turn off
your radiator will probubly get clogged if not clear water
your altinator will not like it...
grease on spark plug wire caps

a couple feet and a splash. BIG SPLASH though
florida4x4 09-09-2008, 12:20 PM Here's what I did with mine:
o Fabbed up a snorkle hat that covers the accel pump on my q-jet
o welded a oil fill bung to the V/C (o-ring seal)
o welded an AN fitting for the V/C breather (routed to snorkle hat)
o install a good clutch fan so I'm not kicking up as much water when it's four feet deep
o install a gear reduction starter (stock starters collect mud and debris)
o install custom crimped battery cables with self sealing heat shrink tube to keep water out (insurance)
o drilled a couple drain holes in the dizzy so water doesn't pool or enter the engine
o make sure the engine is sealed up properly (no oil leaks)
o install vent tubes to both diff's, trans and TC
o remote reservoir PS pump housing and can from a 1990 van
Another thing you need to watch out for is be sure the bolt hole on the front of the block down by the fuel pump is blocked or water and mud can drain right in to the oil pan. Let me tell you I know how bad that sucks!
Here's some pics (V/C mods not done yet in these):

the small block is the only one with the pushrod bolt issue, big blocks dont suffer from it... just an fyi.
florida4x4 11-18-2008, 08:25 AM We got a bunch of rain last week and so I got to try everything out on Saturday. The trail we were on is usually only a couple feet deep. Freaking amazing how the engine idled like normal through this. That was about 50" of water and I sat there for a couple minutes while my buddy hooked up the rope. It backed on out no sweat. I need get my air filter outta the cab floor and figure out a way to seal off the oil dipstick now. I think she'll run (fully) underwater.

mudskipper4x4 11-18-2008, 09:22 AM Video looks good. What did you do to waterproof the tranny and axles if anything? Did you check your fluids to see if anything got in after that run.:D
florida4x4 11-18-2008, 10:32 AM The rear axle was dry, the front had a little water and the hubs were mostly dry. nothing major found so far! I'm going to pull the tranny pan and drain the cases later this week. All the vents are plumbed with air brake line up to the cowl.
thebeeter 11-18-2008, 11:12 AM does anyone do anything with the starters?
pre lube/post lube?

I would pull that pan and drain the ATF ASAP unless you are running a special dip stick tube. The seal a the tranny is hardly enough to hold the ATF in let alone keep water out.

The starter is fairly well sealed I would be more worried about the Alt. I have herd of people spraying their starter motor and alt down (with WD40 I think) after running deep mud/water.
florida4x4 11-18-2008, 12:31 PM I had a lot of problems with the old style starter. The late model reduction starter has worked very well. Trans is sealed pretty well. I do need a stick that seals like what's on my 90 burb.

In two years of racing this truck went through 8 alternators and over 12 starters of the stock replacement variety. I did originally have a high amp one wire alternator that lasted a while, but eventually broke then replaced with an o'rielly's special and replaced that quite often. I use a mechanical clutch fan so that when you hit something that is fairly solid like water or mud it will stop spinning and then start back up when you get out of the muck.

mudskipper4x4 11-18-2008, 03:54 PM I hope the radiators not in the front!!:flipoff2:
bigchevytruckdriver 07-31-2009, 06:12 AM sealed the shit out of my tranny dipstick tube already some shit in a tube forget now which kind I have submerged it that far with no issues
bigchevytruckdriver 08-09-2009, 06:08 PM Today i was at work at the hardware store and got a flexible adapter for abs (big round rubber w/hose clamp) and had an epiffany if i stuck this iver the top part of my carb including the accel pump rod and tightened the shit out of it then plumbed abs from there to the roof line would that suffice ?
