Look for a big 401 cast into the side
or 360 or 304

The cast numbers are located on both sides of the block, where the motor mount brackets are. If the engine is in the Jeep, you'll have to shine a flashlight between the bracket and the block.

When I bought my Jeep, the P.O. advertised it as having a 304. One day I was installing new motor mounts, and I saw the casting numbers for the first time. They were 401!! Obviously, the P.O. didn't do the engine swap, and had no idea.

It made my day!!:D

What'd you think you just had a warmed up 304?

What'd you think you just had a warmed up 304?I bought it off of ebay, from another state. When I got it, it ran like crap!! I cleaned up the wiring, added GM HEI ignition, played with the timing, and got it to run pretty good. I was impressed at how fast it was.

I also had bought an AMC 360 earlier, and planned on swapping out the 304 for the 360. I thought to myself, "man, these 304's are powerful!" "I don't think I'll even bother to install the 360".

Then I discovered that it was a 401. That was a great day!!:D

As the others said, the block size will be cast just under the engine mount. Here are the engine codes; should be a tag on the front passenger side valve cover.
