: Hydro Assist Question

I completed a homemade hydro assist project on my CJ-5 about a year ago and it works well, but there is just one thing that has me scratching my head. Whenever I turn full lock to either side, the ram jolts hard (pushes faster and more violently). I was wondering whether anyone else has this issue. I worry about possible damage from the knuckle bottoming out on the steering stop but still have a jolting force against it. I don't want to screw my ball joints. Anyway, I don't turn as sharply because of it. It does it on both sides when I turn. The parts are from surplus supply. The ram is 1.5X8 inch stroke. Stock 258 pump bored out slightly and running a hydraulic filter from NAPA for extra fluid capacity. If you've experienced this or heard of a fix please let me know.

Thanks,
Charlie

This is a common problem even with a bouhgt kit. When you turn the gear box all the way, it puts out 100% of pump pressure to the ram. Remember you are sharring your fluid pressure between your gear box and your ram, if you box is all the way to either side it will devert all pressure to the ram. I have not had any problems with ball joints or steering due to this. Your ram is sufficiant lenght, I would not worry about it.

Sounds like you have too much stroke. You might need to install a few stops on the ram so it bottoms out slightly before your steering does.
Of the 2 answers you got, I'd go with this one ;) It's the one that doesn't rely on your knuckle to hold back the force of the ram.
