I've got a Goodwrench crate 350, I don't think its the performance version, came out of a early 80s suburban. I've got a set of vortec heads to put on it. Currently sitting at the machine shop waiting to be gone through. Nothing major, just making sure nothing's cracked, etc.

I have access to a vortec block, with all the front accessories, along with cracked heads. Also, there is a vertical groove cut in the #1 cylinder, have no idea what from.

Should I sell my crate engine and build the vortec, or forget the vortec block? The crate cost me $450 already, vortec heads were free. The block is going to run $250 plus whatever fix that groove.

I'm swapping to a vortec manifold in either case, planning to run propane.

Just looking for some opinions here.

The Vortec will offer you an OEM roller cam arrangement.....other than that the blocks are about the same (minus the fuel pump provision which the Vortec block won't have).

the vortec block will have a better casting finish to it, as well.

this means less porosity, and though it has a one peice rear main, you will be able to find a stroker crank if/when you desire, for a reasonable price. GM makes a 3.8 inch stroker crank, you know...
